Pandemic Architecture, the International Ideas Competition curated by the Design Ambassador for ARCHISEARCH.gr, completed successfully accomplishing a profound impact on the international architectural community, with the number of registrations to exceed 800, with the final proposals to exceed 400 and with participants from more than 60 different countries.
SELF-HELP by Yau Kai Shing from Hong Kong was awarded with HONOURABLE MENTION prize out of 440 projects.
“To me, it is my honour to share my architecture concept according to different social issue and agency. And I hope I can improve the quality of life via my architecture philosophy”, say Yau Kai Shing.
The COVID 19 spread in Hong Kong because our government insist on not blocking the border. We put many efforts on decreasing the influence like sharing the anti-epidemic items to the community. However, our government do not care about it and keep doing other things for political profits.
In addition, social distancing is a disaster for Hong Kong people because our living spaces are limited. We are very depressed because it is similar to live in jail when we spend most of the time facing crowded space. Also, family conflicts are increased because spaces are not enough for home office and schooling at the same time.
This proposal tries to come up with a design solution to alleviate this situation of confinement.
In the existing context, most of the housing in Hong Kong have bay windows to allow more ventilation and daylight penetration. Unfortunately, the bay windows are almost useless because they are just designed to fit the minimum building requirement. Besides, bamboo scaffolding is very common in Hong Kong for building maintenance works because of the short construction period and affordability.
Therefore, my design concept is to retrofit the bay window with local bamboo technology. I name it “Self- Help” because it is a quick and easy construction, which can be done most people with some vocational training. Also, it is a metaphor in Hong Kong that we can only survive with civic engagement instead of the government.
I design 3 types of “Self-Help”: Type 1 for meditation, Type 2 for performance and Type 3 for extension of the home office.
During the pandemic, the meditation space is important for people to release their negative emotion while going outside is impossible because of the social distancing. In addition to meditation space, I introduce Type 2 for performance space inspired by the balcony-singing in Italy. It is essential to share mental support in the neighbourhood. Concerning Type 3, it is designed for extending the area of the home office. Because in Hong Kong, our living area is really small that is hard to start a home office in some cases.
In the design detail, I fix the bamboos into one with hardware to increase the strength, which I call it primary bamboo beam. For the bamboo trusses which are fixed vertically, those are interlocked to enhance the rigidity of the structure. For the external, it wrapped by the fabric net, which inspired by the bamboo scaffolding. The ambient level covered by fabric net is designed for a different programme. For example, the design of type 1 is wrapped fully to create a quiet space against the concrete jungle.

Η πρόταση SELF-HELP από τον Yau Kai Shing από το Χόνγκ Κόνγκ απέσπασε τη διάκριση HONOURABLE MENTION στο σύνολο 440 συμμετοχών.

O COVID 19 εξαπλώθηκε στο Χονγκ Κονγκ επειδή η κυβέρνησή μας επιμένει να μην κλείνει τα σύνορα. Καταβάλλουμε πολλές προσπάθειες για τη μείωση της εξάπλωσής του, ωστόσο, η κυβέρνησή δεν ενδιαφέρεται και συνεχίζει να λειτουργεί με άξονα το πολιτικό κέρδος.
Επιπλέον, η κοινωνική απόσταση είναι μια καταστροφική συνθήκη για τους κατοίκους του Χονγκ Κονγκ επειδή οι χώροι διαμονής μας είναι περιορισμένοι. Είμαστε καταθλιπτικοί γιατί η απομόνωση μοιάζει με ζωή στη φυλακή, όταν συνήθως περνάμε τον περισσότερο χρόνο μας σε πολυσύχναστους χώρους. Επίσης, οι οικογενειακές συγκρούσεις αυξάνονται επειδή οι χώροι του σπιτιού δεν επαρκούν για να λειτουργήσουν άλλες παράλληλες δραστηριότητες, όπως η μάθηση.
Εγώ, ως κάτοικος του Χονγκ Κονγκ, προσπάθησα να σχεδιάσω μια πρόταση για να μετριάσω την κατάσταση του εγκλεισμού.
Στο υπάρχον πλαίσιο, τα περισσότερα από τα σπίτια στο Χονγκ Κονγκ έχουν παράθυρα με προεξοχή που επιτρέπουν καλύτερο αερισμό και φωτισμό κατα τη διάρκεια της ημέρας. Δυστυχώς, όμως, τα παράθυρα αυτά είναι σχεδόν άχρηστα, επειδή έχουν σχεδιαστεί έτσι ώστε να ταιριάζουν στις ελάχιστες απαιτήσεις ενός κτιρίου. Επιπλέον, οι σκαλωσιές απο μπαμπού είναι πολύ συνηθισμένες στο Χονγκ Κονγκ για εργασίες συντήρησης κτιρίων λόγω της σύντομης και φθηνής κατασκευής τους.
Επομένως, η σχεδιαστική μου ιδέα είναι να προσαρμόσω εκ νέου το παράθυρο με την τοπική τεχνολογία μπαμπού. Η πρόταση ονομάζεται “Αυτοβοήθεια” επειδή είναι μια γρήγορη και εύκολη κατασκευή, η οποία μπορεί να γίνει από ανθρώπους χωρίς επαγγελματική κατάρτιση.
Διακρίνονται 3 τύποι: Τύπος 1 για διαλογισμό, Τύπος 2 για παράσταση και Τύπος 3 για επέκταση του γραφείου στο σπίτι. Κατά τη διάρκεια της πανδημίας, ο χώρος διαλογισμού είναι σημαντικός για τους ανθρώπους ώστε να απελευθερώσουν τα αρνητικά τους συναισθήματα. Εκτός από τον χώρο διαλογισμού, εισάγεται ο Τύπος 2 που εμπνέεται από το τραγούδι στα μπαλκόνια κατα τη διάρκεια της καραντίνας στην Ιταλία. Τέλος, ο Τύπος 3, έχει σχεδιαστεί για την επέκταση του γραφείου στο σπίτι. Επειδή στο Χονγκ Κονγκ το καθιστικό είναι πολύ μικρό, είναι δύσκολο να συνυπάρξει οργανικά ένα γραφείο στο σπίτι.
