Pandemic Architecture, the International Ideas Competition curated by the Design Ambassador for ARCHISEARCH.gr, completed successfully accomplishing a profound impact on the international architectural community, with the number of registrations to exceed 800, with the final proposals to exceed 400 and with participants from more than 60 different countries.

GENDER VIOLENCE IN COVID TIMES by Adrián Zavala Moreno, Irlanda Gatica López and Edgar Adrián González Pérez from Mexico was awarded with HONOURABLE MENTION prize out of 440 projects.

“Thank you for this opportunity and for letting express our ideas to achieve a change and contribute in an existing problem in our country and Latin America that are magnified in complex times. The pandemic showed that women are not safe in their own homes. This motivated us to want to give a new opportunity to those women who live in this situation by offering them a space in which they feel safe. Thanks to the fact that design and architecture can be agents of social change, we are sure that we will be able to generate an important movement. We are proud of this mention and we hope that this project is a first step for a great change”, say Adrián Zavala Moreno, Irlanda Gatica López and Edgar Adrián González Pérez.

The Coronavirus is showing social problems, revealing inequalities and exposing the inhabitants to a risky situation. One of the problems manifested is violence against women, since before the pandemic it is one of the axes of political debate in Mexico while during the lockdown the number of cases of violence and femicides has been increasing. Demonstrating that violence is also experienced at home and in times of crisis, actions must be taken to prevent it.

This crisis leads us to revalue the domestic space and habitable means.

Our team decided to focus on domestic violence, to avoid increasing death rates from both COVID-19 and femicides. The aim is to give women a temporary living space that takes them away from a violent environment and keeps them protected during the pandemic. This temporary shelter is assembled based on removable modules made of wood that can be assembled according to the needs of space, having the virtue of assembling it in a day without crowding people.

We chose the city where we live which is San Luis Potosí in Mexico, the location of these temporary shelters takes place in areas that lack basic services and infrastructure, where the rate of violence is high, especially violence against women, so they are classified as critical areas, being considered vulnerable areas. We chose those vulnerable areas for the installation of shelters as strategic locations to facilitate access to these modules, guaranteeing a temporary home. The spaces where the temporary shelters are projected will have an administrative area, medical services and a food bank.

Having a permeable, open and inclusive structure, giving a space for interaction between neighbours and promoting social cohesion, all this taking into account the measures to avoid virus spread.

Together with vulnerable areas, we will locate shelters in the main public square of the city, in order to show the reality in which we live and the problem of violence against women in our country before society and the government, and how the pandemic increased gender violence. The subsequent use of the shelters will be divided for different purposes, a percentage will be awarded to non-governmental organisations, as support for women who suffer violence, to follow up on their case and thus settling them in a safe place, providing them with modules such as living place. On the other hand, a percentage of the modules will be destined to the Federal Government, to be able to use it in natural catastrophes or sanitary crises, to offer a temporary refuge to people who need it. And lastly, grant modules to people who were economically affected by COVID, supporting them with their donation and thus supporting local trade.

Thus, resulting in a scalable and repeatable project for any country made up of modules with easy installation techniques, affordable and adaptable. Giving them a use after confinement to support the community, women and give a new life opportunity.

Η πρόταση GENDER VIOLENCE IN COVID TIMES από τους Adrián Zavala Moreno, Irlanda Gatica López Country και Edgar Adrián González Pérez από το Μεξικό απέσπασε τη διάκριση HONOURABLE MENTION στο σύνολο 440 συμμετοχών.
