Pandemic Architecture, the International Ideas Competition curated by the Design Ambassador for ARCHISEARCH.gr, completed successfully accomplishing a profound impact on the international architectural community, with the number of registrations to exceed 800, with the final proposals to exceed 400 and with participants from more than 60 different countries.
ISOLINETION by Arseniy Bychkov, Sofya Garkusha and Valentin Garkusha from Russia was awarded with SPECIAL DISTINCTION prize out of 440 projects.

Location
Since Moscow is a large metropolitan city with a rapidly changing epidemiological situation, we’ve decided to use one of the central districts of our city as a test location of the project. However, the concept proposed is universal and can be applied to any scale – from a small district to an entire city.
Concept
In one of our discussions, we noticed that the words “isolation” and “isoline” are very similar in sound. So we decided to combine them into a single concept. From here the name “isolinetion” was born. We realized that the infection rate data when mapped to the plan of a certain area can be displayed as some kind of relief, where peaks and valleys would represent parts of the city with more or less confirmed cases. This spatial expression of the data seems to be a great instrument to resolve some of the issues that a pandemic arises.
Problem
Couple of months ago during the outbreak of the virus, people were not restricted in movement and traveled freely around the city, creating a risk of infecting other people. The city authorities in many countries, who had not encountered an epidemic earlier on such large scale, decided that total isolation would be the best solution to stop the infection from spreading. However, isolation is not always fair on such a scale and entails large losses – the city ceases to function normally, especially when it comes to a long time period. Therefore, in our project, we tried to come up with a way to create a safe environment in which people would have the maximum opportunity to live a normal life.
The aim of the project is to create safe environment based on the confirmed cases data, forming new safe travel routes and thus ensuring permeability of the city within the considered territory.
How it works
Using a specifically designed algorithm, the infection spread map is created (the relief). According to this map the site is divided into two zones: red (isolated area) and blue (open area). This leads to the fact that the danger zone is isolated only within the required radius. In the safe zone, meanwhile, new routes are be-ing formed by opening closed courtyards and creating points of attraction within them, which, in return, makes the city permeable.
Effect
Our project is useful because, on the one hand, it helps people to choose the safest routes through the city, and on the other, it keeps businesses open in the safe areas. The environment is constantly adapting to new data. In addition the project opens up the city from the inside. In ordinary life, we often choose the shortest routes to move from point A to point B. However, shifting some of the attraction points from central streets to inner courts we make people look for the new routes visiting previously unknown parts of the city.

Η πρόταση ISOLINETION από τους Arseniy Bychkov, Sofya Garkusha και Valentin Garkusha από την Ρωσία απέσπασε τη διάκριση SPECIAL DISTINCTION στο σύνολο 440 συμμετοχών.

Τοποθεσία
Δεδομένου ότι η Μόσχα είναι μια μεγάλη μητροπολιτική πόλη, με ραγδαία μεταβαλλόμενη επιδημιολογική κατάσταση, αποφασίσαμε να χρησιμοποιήσουμε μία από τις κεντρικές περιοχές της πόλης, ως τοποθεσία-τεστ για το έργο μας. Ωστόσο, η συνθετική ιδέα που προτείνεται, μπορεί να εφαρμοστεί παγκοσμίως, και σε όλες τις κλίμακες – από μία μικρή περιοχή μέχρι μία ολόκληρη πόλη.
Κεντρική ιδέα
Σε μία από τις συζητήσεις μας, παρατηρήσαμε πως οι λέξεις “isolation” και “isoline” ηχούν σχεδόν ίδια. Έτσι αποφασίσαμε να τις συνδυάσουμε σε μία κεντρική ιδέα. Έτσι προέκυψε το όνομα “isolinetion”. Συνειδητοποιήσαμε πως τα ποσοστιαία δεδομένα κρουσμάτων, χαρτογραφούνται στο σχέδιο μιας περιοχής, όπου οι κορυφές και οι κοιλάδες θα αντιπροσωπεύουν τμήματα της πόλης με περισσότερα και λιγότερα, αντίστοιχα, επιβεβαιωμένα περιστατικά. Αυτή η χωρική έκφραση δεδομένων μοιάζει να είναι ένα εξαιρετικό μέσο, για την επίλυση ορισμένων ζητημάτων που προκύπτουν από την πανδημία.
Προβληματική
Μερικούς μήνες νωρίτερα, κατά το ξέσπασμα του ιού, η κίνηση των ανθρώπων δεν ήταν περιορισμένη, ταξίδευαν ελεύθερα στην πόλη, αυξάνοντας τον κίνδυνο μετάδοσης του ιού. Σε πολλές χώρες, οι δημοτικές αρχές, που δεν είχαν συναντήσει ξανά επιδημία σε τόσο μεγάλη κλίμακα, αποφάσισαν πως η πλήρης απομόνωση θα ήταν καλύτερη λύση, ώστε να περιοριστεί η εξάπλωση του ιού. Ωστόσο, η απομόνωση δεν είναι πάντα δίκαιη σε τέτοια κλίμακα και εμπεριέχει μεγάλες απώλειες – η πόλη παύει να λειτουργεί κανονικά – ιδίως όταν πρόκειται για μεγάλο χρονικό διάστημα. Ως εκ τούτου, προσπαθήσαμε να βρούμε έναν τρόπο, να δημιουργήσουμε ένα ασφαλές περιβάλλον στο οποίο οι άνθρωποι θα είχαν όσο το δυνατόν πιο φυσιολογική ζωή.
Το έργο στοχεύει στη δημιουργία ενός ασφαλούς περιβάλλοντος, βασισμένο στα επιβεβαιωμένα κρούσματα, διαμορφώνοντας νέες ασφαλείς ταξιδιωτικές διαδρομές. Έτσι εξασφαλίζεται η “διαπερατότητα” την πόλης εντός συγκεκριμένων περιοχών.
Αποτέλεσμα
Η χρησιμότητα του project άπτεται, από τη μία, του ότι βοηθά το κοινό να επιλέξει τις ασφαλέστερες διαδρομές δια μέσου της πόλης. Από την άλλη πλευρά, οι επιχειρήσεις που βρίσκονται στις ασφαλείς περιοχές, παραμένουν ανοιχτές. Το περιβάλλον προσαρμόζεται συνεχώς στα νέα δεδομένα. Επιπροσθέτως, η πρόταση διευρύνει, κατά μία έννοια, το πεδίο της πόλης από τα μέσα. Στη συνήθη καθημερινότητα, συχνά επιλέγουμε τις συντομότερες διαδρομές για να μετακινηθούμε από ένα σημείο Α σε ένα σημείο Β. Ωστόσο, μετακινώντας κάποια σημεία ενδιαφέροντος, από κεντρικούς δρόμους, σε λιγότερο εξωστρεφείς, συμβάλλουμε στο να επισκεφθούν τα άτομα λιγότερο γνωστά σημεία της πόλης, ψάχνοντας νέες διαδρομές.
