Pandemic Architecture, the International Ideas Competition curated by the Design Ambassador for ARCHISEARCH.gr, completed successfully accomplishing a profound impact on the international architectural community, with the number of registrations to exceed 800, with the final proposals to exceed 400 and with participants from more than 60 different countries.
CANNIBALISM CITY by Yafei Li from USA was awarded with HONOURABLE MENTION prize out of 440 projects.
“It is a great honor to be selected as one of the honorable mentions by Archisearch. Big thanks to Archisearch Editorial Team for organizing such a valuable competition. It is a great opportunity to see different ideas in pandemic architecture from all the teams across the world. I hope my project would also contribute a unique perspective to the future of architecture”, says Yafei Li.
The series of graphite drawings, Cannibalism City, depicts an “imaginary” city under the attack of COVID-19 in different perspectives.
1 | Media Fortress
On January 23, 2020, the city of Wuhan was locked down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Before that, however, mass media has already stuffily enclosed the city. People, even from the outside, are struggling to breathe. Facing the daily death toll, we become insensitive and seem to have long forgotten that each number represents a fresh life. The media has been building a thick wall, suffocating the city, as well as alienating our hearts.
2 | Optical Slave
Human beings have never given up the idea of “entertaining eyeballs”. Such efforts often come at the cost of giving up the truth. Just like a pinhole camera, mass media andrumors can turn the city upside down. As Qian Zhongshu wrote in Fortress Besieged, “The uneducated are fooled by others because they are illiterate. The educated are taken in by printed matter like your newspaper propaganda because they are literate”. Rumors engulfed the city silently, like drugs, but we still enjoy the thrill.
3 | Anthill Section
The city is infected, but perhaps it was injured long ago. People are asked to quarantine themselves at home. The city becomes a prison or an ant colony in this disaster. Its plan view looks like a painted skin, where everything looks well organized. The section, however, is as intricate as an ant colony. We are brainwashed by the queen ant, moving only in the narrow tunnels. We are waiting, waiting for an opportunity to get back up and eventually we will forget the mess in the section.
4 | Social Intestine
The city is shattered by social distancing, whose intestine can be peeped between the six-foot gap. The broken grids, like islands, staring at each other with no interaction or communication. Social distancing pulls the city apart and reveals the dirty intestine, full of racial discrimination and class conflict, hidden under a seemingly friendly face.
A painted skin has been torn apart and the essence of cannibalism in this city is exposed.
5 | Cannibalism City
Cannibalism City, it reminds me of a paragraph in Diary of a Madman by Lu Xun, “When I opened up a history book. The history is undated and scrawled across every page are a few words about compassion, duty, propriety and integrity. As I couldn’t sleep anyway, I read closely for half the night, and only then from the seams of the letters could I see the two words that it was packed full of Eat People!”
Who is eating? Is it the city? Who is in that city? Is it us? We are spectators in the Colosseum, watching the city open its giant bloody mouth and eat people, applauding. Eventually, the spectators turned into graves. Lu Xun wrote at the end of his diary, “Children who have not yet eaten people, or have they? Save the children…”

Η πρόταση CANNIBALISM CITY από τον Yafei Li από τις ΗΠΑ απέσπασε τη διάκριση HONOURABLE MENTION στο σύνολο 440 συμμετοχών.

Είναι μια εξαιρετική ευκαιρία να δούμε διαφορετικές ιδέες για την μετά τη πανδημία αρχιτεκτονική από πολλές, διαφορετικές ομάδες από όλο τον κόσμο. Η σειρά σχεδίων με γραφίτη Cannibalism City, απεικονίζει μια “φανταστική” πόλη υπό την επίθεση του COVID-19 απο διαφορετικές οπτικές γωνίες.
1 | Φρούριο ΜΜΕ
Στις 23 Ιανουαρίου 2020, η πόλη Wuhan τέθηκε σε καραντίνα λόγω της πανδημίας COVID-19. Πριν από αυτό, ωστόσο, τα μέσα μαζικής ενημέρωσης έχουν ήδη περιβάλλει την πόλη. Άνθρωποι, ακόμη και από έξω, αγωνίζονται για να αναπνεύσουν. Αντιμετωπίζοντας τον καθημερινό θάνατο, γινόμαστε αναίσθητοι και φαίνεται ότι έχουμε ξεχάσει εδώ και καιρό ότι κάθε αριθμός αντιπροσωπεύει μια νέα ζωή. Τα μέσα μαζικής ενημέρωσης χτίζουν ένα χοντρό τείχος, ασφυκτιούν την πόλη, ενώ παράλληλα αποξενώνουν τις καρδιές μας.
2 | Οπτικός σκλάβος
Τα ανθρώπινα όντα δεν έχουν εγκαταλείψει ποτέ την ιδέα του “διασκεδαστικού ματιού”. Ακριβώς σαν pinhole camera, τα μέσα μαζικής ενημέρωσης και οι φήμες μπορούν να ανατρέψουν την εικόνα της πόλης. Όπως έγραψε ο Qian Zhongshu στο Fortress Besieged, “Οι αμόρφωτοι ξεγελιούνται από άλλους επειδή είναι αναλφάβητοι. Οι μορφωμένοι προσεγγίζονται από έντυπα όπως η προπαγάνδα της εφημερίδας σας επειδή είναι εγγράμματοι”. Οι φήμες κατέκλυσαν σιωπηλά την πόλη, σαν ναρκωτικές ουσίες, αλλά εξακολουθούμε να απολαμβάνουμε το συναίσθημα.
3 | Τμήμα Anthill
Η πόλη έχει μολυνθεί, αλλά ίσως τραυματίστηκε πριν απο πολύ καιρό. Οι άνθρωποι καλούνται να μείνουν σε καραντίνα στο σπίτι. Η πόλη γίνεται φυλακή ή αποικία μυρμηγκιών σε αυτήν την καταστροφή. Η κάτοψη μοιάζει με βαμμένο δέρμα, όπου όλα φαίνονται καλά οργανωμένα. Η τομή, ωστόσο, είναι περίπλοκη σαν αποικία μυρμηγκιών. Εχοντας υποστεί πλύση εγκεφάλου, κινούμαστε μόνο στις στενές σήραγγες. Περιμένουμε, περιμένουμε την ευκαιρία να ξαναγυρίσουμε και τελικά θα ξεχάσουμε το χάος που επικρατεί εκεί.
4 | Κοινωνικό έντερο
Η πόλη γκρεμίζεται από κοινωνικές αποστάσεις. Τα σπασμένα πλέγματα, σαν νησιά, κοιτάζουν το ένα το άλλο χωρίς αλληλεπίδραση ή επικοινωνία. Η κοινωνική απομάκρυνση χωρίζει την πόλη και αποκαλύπτει το βρώμικο έντερο, γεμάτο φυλετικές διακρίσεις και ταξικές συγκρούσεις, κρυμμένες κάτω από ένα φαινομενικά φιλικό πρόσωπο.
Το βαμμένο δέρμα έχει σχιστεί και εκτίθεται η ουσία του κανιβαλισμού σε αυτήν την πόλη.
5 | Πόλη του κανιβαλισμού
Η Cannibalism City, μου θυμίζει μια παράγραφο στο Ημερολόγιο ενός Τρελού του Lu Xun, “Ανοιξα ένα βιβλίο ιστορίας. Η ιστορία είναι χρονολογημένη και περιγραμμένη σε κάθε σελίδα με λίγα λόγια για συμπόνια, καθήκον και ακεραιότητα. Δεδομένου ότι δεν μπορούσα να κοιμηθώ ούτως ή άλλως, το διάβασα προσεκτικά για μισή νύχτα, και μόνο τότε από τις ραφές των γραμμάτων μπορούσα να δω τις δύο λέξεις που ήταν παντού Φάτε ανθρώπους!”.
Ποιος τρώει; Είναι η πόλη; Ποιος είναι σε αυτήν την πόλη; Είμαστε εμείς; Είμαστε θεατές στο Κολοσσαίο, βλέποντας την πόλη να ανοίγει το γιγαντιαίο αιματηρό στόμα της και να τρώει ανθρώπους, χειροκροτώντας. Τελικά, οι θεατές μετατράπηκαν σε τάφους. Ο Lu Hun έγραψε στο τέλος του ημερολογίου του, “Παιδιά που δεν έχουν φάει ακόμα ανθρώπους, ή μήπως έχουν; Σώστε τα παιδιά…”
