Diploma thesis by Aliki Chamalidou suggests a narrative prototype of public habitation inspired by the spatial qualities found in the Three colors Trilogy analysis of director Krzysztof Kieślowski.

Focusing on a severely active area in the center of Thessaloniki, the thesis revolves around an urban intervention that will reside in place of an abandoned apartment building. The area was studied in depth which was the main challenge of the project, due to the seemingly unwelcome nature of this part of the center. It serves mainly as a passage that connects the university campus with the historical center, it fails to provide reasons for us to stay in place or rest, usually we pass through in a quick pace. However it was essential to search for a more complex survey of the urban tissue. The analysis became a type of play, for each part of the area a humain portrait was created, then each portrait was translated into small models made of cement and metallic components.

This vocabulary lead to a final map, a summary in a circular pattern that describes the change in modes of walking. This pattern was divided in four scenarios that will intertwine and create our synthesis. Each scenario uses a certain structure, lighting and material that produce a trigger inside the building, that can either awaken the user or diffuse the tension, recreating this storytelling circle.

The result is a public space with narrative qualities, full of question marks, reasons to search this layout and perhaps interact with the space.

The project includes the design of a hammock, as equipment used instead of a bench that can fit in two people. The inspiration comes from the shell of a cocoon, a protective shell necessary for it’s owner in order to gain confidence to introduce himself to the outside environment, when he is ready to leave his own privacy. The focus of the design is to take as little space as possible. The wooden skeleton of the hammock is created to nest inside a metal frame. These frames, 4 meters long, are placed all over the building. By shift and rotation, the two movements unfold the fabric in order for the hammock to be used.

The original building mirrors the unfamiliar impression of the area, feels uncanny. By trying to reverse its nature, the result is a hybrid in its function. It incorporates the bus stop that is nearby, some public resting spots like balconies, four small residences on the upper floors with their own working place , spaces for entrepreneurs to showcase their work inside the building, and finally a small rooftop cafe.

The ambition is to create some reasons to stay and explore, an experience that evolves the overall impression of the area.
