Εστιάζουμε σε έναν βιώσιμο τρόπο φυσικής κατοίκησης στον πλανήτη μας. Λαχταρούμε τις βασικές αρχές της συνύπαρξης ενώ αγωνιζόμαστε να προστατεύσουμε την ατομικότητα. Μπαίνουμε στον άγνωστο κόσμο της Τεχνητής Νοημοσύνης. Εξερευνούμε ψηφιακούς κόσμους φτιαγμένους από ανθρώπους για ανθρώπους.
Το φετινό θέμα, «MULTIVERSE», γεφυρώνει περαιτέρω τις θεωρίες για τη συνεχιζόμενη αλλαγή με τις πρώτες τους επιροές στους τομείς της αρχιτεκτονικής, του σχεδιασμού και των τεχνών.
Το “MULTIVERSE” προτείνει πολλαπλά συνυπάρχοντα περιβάλλοντα.
Ο Μιχάλης Ραυτόπουλος εκπροσωπώντας το γραφείο AREA (Architecture Research Athens) θα είναι ένας από τους ομιλητές της φετινής διοργάνωσης ΕΣΩ 2023.
Ο Μιχάλης Ραυτόπουλος (Αθήνα, 1978), πήρε το Bachelor of Arts στην Ιστορία της Τέχνης (Αριστούχος) από το Πανεπιστήμιο του Michigan, Ann Arbor (1995-1999). Το 2002 ολοκλήρωσε το Master of Architecture στο Πανεπιστήμιο Berkeley της Καλιφόρνια όπου και συνεργάστηκε στενά με τον Greig Crysler σε ερευνητικά προγάμματα και εκδόσεις. Από το 2004 έως το 2006 δούλεψε για το αρχιτεκτονικό γραφείο Jaklitsch Gardner Architects στη Νέα Υόρκη, ενώ στην Αθήνα έχει δουλέψει σαν συνεργάτης του γραφείου ISV Architects & Associates. Από το 2013 Διδάσκει Αρχιτεκτονικό Σχεδιασμό στο Τμήμα Αρχιτεκτόνων του Πανεπιστημίου Πατρών.
Το αρχιτεκτονικό γραφείο AREA (Architecture Research Athens) σχηματίστηκε το 2006 από τους αρχιτέκτονες Σ.Δαούτη, Γ.Μητρούλια και Μ.Ραυτόπουλο. Συνδυάζοντας σπουδές και επαγγελματική εμπειρία στην Ελλάδα, τη Γαλλία, την Ολλανδία και τις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες, με κοινό σημείο συνάντησης τη Νέα Υόρκη, επέστρεψαν στην Αθήνα και έκτοτε συμμετέχουν ενεργά στις δυναμικές εξελίξεις του ελληνικού αρχιτεκτονικού τοπίου.
Έργα των AREA έχουν βρεθεί στη λίστα των AR emerging awards 2022 και έχουν διακριθεί με Έπαινο στα Βραβεία Αρχιτεκτονικής 2017 (ΕΙΑ), έχουν επιλεγεί υποψήφια για τα βραβεία Ευρωπαϊκής Αρχιτεκτονικής Mies van der Rohe 2017 και έχουν διακριθεί ανάμεσα στα καλύτερα υλοποιημένα έργα νέων αρχιτεκτόνων και στις καλύτερες μελέτες των ετών 2022, 2015 και 2013 (ΔΟΜΕΣ 2021. 2015, 2013), καθώς και σε αρχιτεκτονικούς διαγωνισμούς για δημόσια και ιδιωτικά έργα μεγάλης κλίμακας.

Ridge House, Αντίπαρος (2022)
Η κατοικία τοποθετείται στο κέντρο μιας ανάπτυξης από πέντε συνολικά ανεξάρτητες κατοικίες, ακριβώς πάνω στη ράχη μιας πλαγιάς στη δυτική ακτή της Αντιπάρου.Η κατοικία αγκυρώνεται στο βράχο με τη μορφή ενός καμπύλου αναλημματικού τοίχου που ακολουθεί τις υψομετρικές καμπύλες του φυσικού εδάφους. Αυτή η πέτρινη ραχοκοκαλιά ενσωματώνει μία σειρά από υπόσκαφους χώρους υποστήριξης και ξενώνες, προσανατολισμένους με θέα τη θάλασσα, κρυμμένους κάτω από φυτευμένες οροφές.
Προστατευμένοι κάτω από τα δοκάρια της πέργκολας, οι κύριοι χώροι διημέρευσης καταλαμβάνουν το χώρο ανάμεσα σε μια διασπορά μονολιθικών όγκων. Η γλυπτική ποιότητα των συμπαγών αυτών τοίχων, οργανωμένων σε μια παιγνιώδη γεωμετρική σύνθεση, φέρνει στο νου την ανεξάντλητη πλαστικότητα της λαϊκής κυκλαδίτικης αρχιτεκτονικής.
Salamis, Εξοχική κατοικία στη Σαλαμίνα (2020)
To τοπίο της Σαλαμίνας, η γεωγραφία και η ιδιαίτερη οικιστική ανάπτυξή του νησιού, αποτέλεσαν την αφετηρία του σχεδιασμού αυτής της μικρής εξοχικής κατοικίας στο Αιάντειο. Η μετέωρη θέση της Σαλαμίνας μεταξύ στεριάς και θάλασσας, πόλης και φύσης, αντιστέκονται στον χαρακτηρισμό της ως τόπου διακοπών. Χωρίς την εξωστρέφεια ενός τυπικού παραθαλλάσιου προορισμού, η Σαλαμίνα απευθύνεται σε μία κοινότητα μόνιμων κατοίκων και λίγων επισκεπτών.
Ακολουθώντας μια στρατηγική εσωστρέφειας, η κατοικία αναπτύσσεται περιμετρικά, αξιοποιώντας το μικροκλίμα και τους δημιουργούμενους υπαίθριους χώρους. Οι εξωτερικοί τοίχοι δίνουν την εντύπωση μιας μονολιθικής κατασκευής, που όμως μέσα της κρύβει μια μεγάλη κεντρική αυλή.Όλοι οι ιδιωτικοί χώροι της κατοικίας είναι ενσωματωμένοι σαν κοιλότητες στους βαρείς περιμετρικούς τοίχους και επικοινωνούν μεταξύ τους μέσω της κεντρικής αυλής.

This year’s theme, “MULTIVERSE”, further bridges theories on the ongoing change with their first consequences on the fields of architecture, design and arts.

Michaeljohn Rautopoulos representing the office AREA (Architecture Research Athens) will be one of the speakers on ESO 2023.
Michaeljohn Raftopoulos (Athens, 1978) acquired the Bachelor of Arts in the History of Art (Class Honors) from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, 1995-1999. In 2002 he completed his MArch at the University of California at Berkeley where he collaborated with Greig Crysler in research and publication projects. From 2004-2006 he worked for Stephan Jaklitsch Architects in New York, And ISV Architects in Athens. Since 2013 he has taught a design studio at the University of Patras School of Architecture.
AREA™ (Architecture Research Athens) is a professional design practice established in 2006 by Styliani Daouti, Giorgos Mitroulias and Michaeljohn Raftopoulos. With academic and professional experience in Greece, France, the Netherlands and the U.S.A., AREA met in New York City but chose to return to Athens in order to participate in the recent, dynamic transformations of the architectural landscape in Greece.
AREA`s work has been distinguished among the best buildings and best projects of 2013,2015 and 2022 (DOMES International Review of Architecture, 2013, 2015,2022) and has received numerous awards in competitions for public and private projects. Among these, AREA received First Prize in the architecture competition for 220 housing units in Thessaloniki (2007), Third Prize in the European competition for the new offices of the Cypriot News Agency in Nicosia (2010), First Prize (ex aequo) in the national competition AthinaX4 (2011) and Honorable Mention in the European competition Europan 12 for the design of Social Housing in Nuremberg, Germany (2013). In 2012, AREA was chosen as one of the up-and-coming architecture offices to represent Greece in the exhibition “Made in Athens” in the Greek Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Last year, AREA was included among a group of offices from around the world on the shortlist of AR emerging awards 2022.
AREA’s Works
Ridge House, Αntiparos (2022)
Ridge House is positioned at the center of five building plots, along a natural ridge in the topography, on the West coast of Antiparos Island. The design of the house thus begins as a reading of the landscape. It clings to the rock, anchored by a long, curving retaining wall, that closely follows the natural contours of the site. This “spine”, constructed of local stone, incorporates a sequence of subterranean spaces, including guest quarters, oriented to the sea and concealed from above by planted roofs.
Tucked beneath the beam structure, the main interiors of the house occupy the spaces between scattered volumes of various shape, size and materiality. Like sculptural wall elements grouped into small, independent compositions, their spatial logic is akin to the ceaseless variations evident in traditional Cycladic architecture.
Salamis, Weekend House on the island of Salamina (2020)
Fundamental questions about site, context and landscape were the driving forces behind the design of this modest summer home on the island of Salamis, in the Saronic Gulf near Athens. A mirror to the uncertainty of its post-industrial landscape, Salamis’ topographic position between land and sea, city and nature, resists the typical characterizations of a Greek island get-away. Lacking the aesthetic traits and assumed extroversion of the typical seaside destination, Salamis is home to a decidedly inward-looking community of residents.
The house interprets the topography of the site through the mechanism of “introspection”, organized as a perimeter condition that develops its own self-sufficient virtues through the fundamental resources of climate and outdoor space. All “private” areas within the program (bedrooms, bathrooms and service areas) are concealed within the heavy exterior walls in a series of small, cave-like spaces.
