Christina Tzekou and Anastasis Stratakis inaugurate their Futures Past art studio based in Thessaloniki with ‘Mother Tongue’ print series which juxtaposes greek antiquity with contemporary Athens’ urban and daily life. -text by the authors
FUTURES PAST is a cross-disciplinary art studio from Greece, founded in 2018 by Christina Tzekou, architect, and Anastasis Stratakis, visual artist, while it is also supported by other occasional contributors. It is a collective art project, taking the form of a conceptual brand that produces art print editions, unique paintings and other multifunctional objects.
Futures Past addresses notions of identity renegotiation, transcultural bonds, cultural reappropriation and recuperation of a distant yet ever-present past, whilst exploring the give-and-take between the handcrafted and the digital within our post-industrial times.
Their inaugural print series entitled ‘Mother Tongue’ is based on collective narratives related to Greece’s ancient heritage, as well as on a long documented walk through the contemporary Athens city center.
It juxtaposes appropriated archival imagery with raw unedited photographs that capture intricate details of the Greek capital’s urban landscape and daily life — as such, blending the ancient ruin with the contemporary one, as well as the exoticised ideal with its descendant wear-and-tear of the here and now.
Overly reconfigured, mistranslated archaic forms such as museum artifacts and ancient temples, are fusing seamlessly with the stark reality of ‘patinated’ sidewalks, graffiti-covered walls, photographs from the scribbled insides of public toilets and other ‘aversive’ surfaces.
Aiming to reinterpret the first while recontextualising the second, what is created is an aesthetic amalgamated balancing between the two ages that take place within the same topos.
Moreover, FUTURES PAST create unique paintings comprised of fragile geometric compositions, using reinterpreted representational forms, painterly gestures or directly appropriated elements — drawing from a syntax of conceptual and formal references, such as: archaic hieroglyphic writing, natural patterns drawn from the Mediterranean landscape, architectural micro-textures and more.
Mustering a visual vocabulary, not very much unlike a lingual one, ‘words’ and ‘phrases’ are put together — producing variant occasional meanings, albeit with a exculpated spirit of instinctive and spontaneous playfulness.

To FUTURES PAST είναι ένα νεοιδρυθέν art studio με βάση τη Θεσσαλονίκη, με βασικά μέλη την Χριστίνα Τζέκου, αρχιτέκτονα, και τον Αναστάση Στρατάκη, εικαστικό, ενώ δουλεύει και με άλλους περιστασιακούς συνεργάτες. Πρόκειται για ένα συλλογικό εγχείρημα, το οποίο υπό τη μορφή ενός conceptual brand παράγει περιορισμένων αντιτύπων art prints, μοναδικά ζωγραφικά έργα και άλλα αντικείμενα.
Το Futures Past εστιάζει σε έννοιες όπως η επαναδιαπραγμάτευση ταυτοτήτων, οι διαπολιτισμικοί δεσμοί και η επαναπροσέγγιση ενός μακρινού αλλά πάντα παρόντος παρελθόντος, ενώ παράλληλα διερευνάται η σχέση μεταξύ χειροποίητου και ψηφιακού κατά τη μεταβιομηχανική εποχή.
Η τρέχουσα σειρά τους με τίτλο ‘Mother Tongue’ βασίζεται από τη μία σε αρχειακό υλικό με αρχαιοελληνικές αναφορές και από την άλλη στην ανεπεξέργαστη φωτογραφική καταγραφή μίας μεγάλης βόλτας στο κέντρο της Αθήνας.
Το αρχαίο ερείπιο συμπαρατίθεται με το σύγχρονο, όπως και το εξωτικοποιημένο ιδεώδες με τη φθορά του εδώ και τώρα. Αρχαϊκές φόρμες, όπως μουσειακά εκθέματα και αρχαίοι ναοί, παντρεύονται οργανικά με το σύγχρονο αστικό τοπίο το οποίο συνθέτουν «πατίνες» πλακών πεζοδρομίων, τοίχοι καλυμένοι με graffiti και tags, γραμμένα εσωτερικά δημόσιων τουαλετών κ.ά.
Επιχειρούν έτσι να επανερμηνεύσουν τα πρώτα επαναπλαισιώνοντας τα δεύτερα, δημιουργώντας ένα πάντρεμα των δύο αυτών χρονικών στιγμών οι οποίες λαμβάνουν χώρα στον ίδιο τόπο.
Επιπλέον, δημιουργούν μοναδικά ζωγραφικά έργα τα οποία αποτελούνται από γεωμετρικές συνθέσεις, χρησιμοποιώντας επανερμηνευμένες μορφές αναπαραστάσεων και ζωγραφικές χειρονομίες — αντλώντας από ένα συντακτικό εννοιολογικών και φορμαλιστικών αναφορών, όπως ιερογλυφικές γραφές, φυσικά μοτίβα παρμένα από το μεσογειακό τοπίο, αρχιτεκτονικές μικρο-υφές και άλλα.
Συνθέτοντας έτσι ένα οπτικό λεξιλόγιο, όχι πολύ διαφορετικό από ένα γλωσσικό, δομούνται «λέξεις» και «φράσεις», κρατώντας ένα ενστικτώδες, αυθόρμητο πνεύμα.
