Set in one hectare of land, filled with olive and almond trees and designed by Studio Andrew Trotter, Villa Cardo is a 4 bedroom summer house in Puglia, Italy.

The house was built using traditional techniques and local materials, in order to ensure the Pugliese vernacular shines through, keeping the building light, airy and cool in the summer.

“We wanted to keep the house simple like the old local buildings, white cubes that have a feeling of the past, to fit beautifully in between the olive trees”, tell us Andrew Trotter, founder of the studio.

Studio Trotter integrated local materials and traditional elements into the design, such as a local sandstone called Tufo that has a high thermal mass and vaulted ceilings and cut-outs in the facades. By borrowing these details, Villa Cardo is capable to reduce its dependence on air conditioning in the summer or heating in the winter.
