British architect Asif Khan has announced his first Australian commission: a month long installation in the middle of Melbourne’s main civic square, Federation Square, which will be unveiled at the Light In Winter Festival, Melbourne.

The new work, named Radiant Lines, explores line, rhythm, velocity and volume – aspects of form and design that recur in Khan’s work. Forty rings of raw aluminium will be superimposed in space creating a visually dynamic layering effect, and animating the public space around it.

Radiant Lines will become illuminated at dusk, with displays of light triggered by individual visitors as they cross concentric thresholds around the square.

Asif Khan comments: “As architects we find ourselves envious of the deftness of touch an artist can employ to achieve both weight and lightness simultaneously on paper. Here for our first Australian project we’re exploring the experience of line quality through volume and form.”

Asif Khan set up his studio in 2007. The Federation Square commission comes shortly after news that Khan has been shortlisted to deliver the UK  Pavilion at the Milan Expo 2015 – the youngest of the shortlisted architects.

The Light In Winter Festival celebrates art, music and performance at dusk, bringing together both local and international collaborators and artists. The festival will run from 1 – 22 June 2014.
