The design involved part of the Doha City Center – a ~330.000 m2 complex consisting of a number of hotels, commercial and convention centers and others – that is situated at the city`s commercial district. The Carpet Museum, with total surface of 2.800 m2, was designated to exhibit Sheikh`s Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani private collection of cultural and historical art, with approximately 10.000 carpets and artifacts.

The carpets are featured entirely on dark backgrounds, in order to accent their colours and patterns. Yet, the directed lighting as well as the different textures of materials (mat, shinny, brushed etc) aim at emphasizing at the individual exhibit`s details and intrigue the visitor`s interest.

In the entrance of the museum, five dominant dendriform structures, act as audio and visual “knowledge points”, one for each thematic section of the exhibition. The holograms and projections, which are used throughout the museum, narrate the local craftsmanship and promote the Qatari cultural heritage, while our wave shaped space concept unites the various sections of the museum.

 
Η μελέτη αποτελεί τμήμα του έργου Doha City Center, συνολικού εμβαδού ~330.000 m2, που βρίσκεται στην εμπορική περιοχή της Ντόχα και αποτελείται από ξενοδοχεία, εμπορικά καταστήματα, συνεδριακούς χώρους κ.α..  Ο χώρος που διατέθηκε για τη στέγαση της ιδιωτικής συλλογής χαλιών και αντικειμένων τοπικής τέχνης του Σεΐχη Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani αγγίζει τα 2.800 m2. Στο μουσείο στεγάζονται ~10.000 ιδιαίτερα χαλιά και τα συνοδευτικά τους αντικείμενα και περιλαμβάνει foyer, χώρους έκθεσης και υποστήριξης.

Τα χαλιά τοποθετούνται σε σκουρόχρωμο περιβάλλον, φέρνοντας τον επισκέπτη σε άμεση συσχέτιση με το αντικείμενο έκθεσης. Αμυδρές διαφοροποιήσεις στο «σκοτεινό» περιβάλλον προκύπτουν αποκλειστικά από τις διαφορετικές υφές υλικών όπως ματ, γυαλιστερό, βουρτσισμένο κ.α. Ο εστιασμένος φωτισμός επιτείνει τη προβολή των χαλιών, αναδεικνύοντας τα χρώματα, τα μοτίβα και τις υφές τους και δημιουργώντας ένα θέατρο φωτός και σκιάς.

Εισερχόμενοι στο foyer του μουσείου, πέντε δεντρόμορφες κολώνες επικρατούν στο χώρο. Εκμεταλλευόμενοι την άτακτη θέση των υποστυλωμάτων, δημιουργήθηκαν σημεία με οπτικοακουστικό υλικό που καθένα αντιστοιχεί στις πέντε θεματικές κατηγορίες των εκθεμάτων. Σε αυτό το χώρο αλλά και στους υπόλοιπους της έκθεσης, γίνεται χρήση ολογραμμάτων και προβολών που «αφηγούνται» σκηνές από τη κατασκευή και την ιστορία των χαλιών. Η κυματοειδής χάραξη, που ενσωματώνει τις βιτρίνες των εκθεμάτων αλλά και άλλους χώρους, ενοποιεί φαινομενικά τα δύο ανεξάρτητα τμήματα του μουσείου.
