Προβολές, συζητήσεις, εργαστήρια, περίπατοι και ποδηλατοδροµίες σε διάφορους χώρους της Αθήνας µε άξονα το DESIGN.
Τον Μάρτιο του 2020, δύο εβδοµάδες πριν την διεξαγωγή της πρώτης έκδοσης του Milano Design Film Festival Greece στην Αθήνα, το φεστιβάλ αναβλήθηκε εξαιτίας της πανδηµίας ανακοινώνοντας νέες ηµεροµηνίες διεξαγωγής: 5-8 Νοεµβρίου 2020. Στο µεσοδιάστηµα εµφανίστηκαν νέες συνεργασίες και υποστηρικτές, δίνοντας την ευκαιρία να
εµπλουτιστεί το προϋπάρχον πρόγραµµα και να διαµορφωθεί µια πρώτη κοινότητα του MDFF στην Ελλάδα.
Σήµερα, µε την επιδείνωση της κατάστασης του κορωνοιού και των αυστηρών µέτρων που έχουν ληφθεί, το διεθνές πρόγραµµα του MDFF Greece—Athens βρίσκεται και πάλι, όπως και πολλά άλλα προγράµµατα πολιτιστικού ενδιαφέροντος παγκοσµίως, µπροστά σε ένα δίληµµα: είτε να επιλέξει την ψηφιακή διεξαγωγή του παρουσιάζοντας όλο του το πρόγραµµά online, είτε να µεταφέρει την φυσική διοργάνωση, ακόµη µια φορά, µέσα στο 2021.
Η οµάδα του MDFF Greece—Athens επέλεξε µια µέση οδό: µεταθέτει την κύρια εκδήλωση στο Μουσείο Μπενάκη και στην Ταινιοθήκη της Ελλάδος για το 2021 αλλά εν τω µεταξύ διαµορφώνει ένα προφεστιβαλικό πρόγραµµα υπό τον τίτλο “Design in Film around the city of Athens”, που θα λειτουργήσει ως προθάλαµος της κύριας εκδήλωσης: Ένα prelaunch series από mini-events προβολών, συζητήσεων, εργαστηρίων, περιπάτων και ποδηλατοδροµίων, δίνοντας έτσι στο κοινό µια πρώτη «γεύση» του MDFF και για όσα πρόκειται να ακολουθήσουν το 2021, και προβάλλοντας ένα ξεχωριστό τρόπο θέασης και βιωµατικής εµπειρίας της ταυτότητας της διοργάνωσης.
Οι περισσότερες από αυτές τις δράσεις θα γίνουν µε φυσική παρουσία ή σε εξωτερικούς χώρους της Αθήνας, ενώ κάποιες θα γίνουν διαδικτυακά.
Όπως σηµειώνει η καλλιτεχνική διευθύντρια του MDFF Greece Άννη Μαρκιτάνη, «οι σηµερινές δυσµενείς συνθήκες έγιναν αφορµή να ανταλλάξουµε σκέψεις και ιδέες µε οργανισµούς/φορείς/ χώρους και ανθρώπους που υποστηρίζουν πρωτοβουλίες κοινωνικού και πολιτιστικού ενδιαφέροντος και συµµερίζονται το πάθος µας για την µεταµορφωτική δύναµη του κόσµου που εµπεριέχεται στον έννοια design. Στόχος είναι να διατηρήσουµε «ζωντανή» την επαφή µας µε την πόλη, και να «παντρέψουµε» το περιεχόµενο µε την ιστορία, τη φιλοσοφία και την ταυτότητα του εκάστοτε φορέα και κατ’ επέκτασιν µε τη φιλοσοφία του MDFF Greece—Athens».
Οι προφεστιβαλικές αυτές δράσεις (prelaunch mini-event series), που επιµελείται το MDFF Greece, θα πραγµατοποιηθούν από τις 2 έως τις 8 Νοεµβρίου του 2020, σε συνεργασία µε δηµόσιους και ιδιωτικούς φορείς στην Αθήνα παρουσιάζοντας ένα πλούσιο περιεχόµενο προβολών, συζητήσεων, εργαστηρίων, ποδηλατοδροµίων και περιπάτων µε αρχιτεκτονικές προεκτάσεις.
Κάποιοι απο τους χώρους όπου θα πραγµατοποιηθούν οι δράσεις του MDFF Greece—Athens είναι οι εξής: Ιταλικό Μορφωτικό Ινστιτούτο Αθηνών, Εργαστήριο ΠΟΙΩ Δ.ΑΘΗΝΑΙΩΝ, Σεράφειο, Μουσείο Βορρέ, InMind Headquarters & Showroom (Future of Work Design Week σε συνεργασία µε την Archisearch & Design Ambassador), Shila Hotel, Blue Cycle Lab, Γαλλικό Ινστιτούτο Ελλάδος (Digital Event), Atelier Cycladon 8 / Workshop Dionisis Sotovikis, Architecture Kids Athens (AKA), Typical Organization for Standards & Order, Εσπερινός, Σχεδία home, European Cultural Center (Digital Event) κ.α.
Εντός αλλά και εκτός οθόνης, µέσα από το MDFF Greece, θα πάρουµε µία πρώτη γεύση από διαφορετικές ιστορίες, ιδέες, σκέψεις, τρόπους ζωής, καινοτοµίες, και γνώσεις. Στη λογική του Learning by Watching (Μάθηση µέσω παρακολούθησης) θα προβληθούν ταινίες που βασίζονται στις αρχές της κοινωνικής, οικονοµικής και οικολογικής βιωσιµότητας, και προσδοκούν να κινητοποιήσουν τις νεότερες γενιές να αλλάξουν τον τρόπο µε τον οποίο προσεγγίζουν τις περιβαλλοντικές προκλήσεις, όπως είναι η περίπτωση των πλαστικών αποβλήτων (Ενότητες Design & Βιωσιµότητα)
Στην Ενότητα Design οι ταινίες καταπιάνονται µε την δηµιουργία καινοτόµων υλικών, το ντιζάιν σε διάλογο µε την καθηµερινότητα ενός αστροναύτη, και βασικά χρηστικά αντικείµενα, όπως η καρέκλα, η οποία, ευαίσθητη στις αλλαγές των καιρών, συνεχίζει να αλλάζει, καθώς όλες οι τεχνολογικές, βιοµηχανικές, κοινωνικές και πολιτιστικές εξελίξεις αποτυπώνονται στην εξέλιξή της.
Στην Ενότητα της Αρχιτεκτονικής σηµαντικοί αρχιτέκτονες συζητούν για το τι σηµαίνει µεταµόρφωση της υφιστάµενης κληρονοµιάς και αλλαγή του τρόπου µε τον οποίο βλέπουµε τις πόλεις και την αρχιτεκτονική. Ταυτόχρονα, 530 κατοικίες οι οποίες έχουν κυριολεκτικά µεταµορφωθεί, αποτελούν το σηµείο εκκίνησης ώστε να ανακαλύψουµε νέους τρόπους για να κατοικούµε και να ζούµε στην πόλη.
Άλλα παραδείγµατα «παντρεύουν» δύο φαινοµενικά αντίθετες τέχνες: τον χορό και την αρχιτεκτονική. Παράλληλα, µια σειρά από βίντεο-συνεντεύξεις µε κορυφαίους εκπροσώπους στην αρχιτεκτονική, παρουσιάζουν καινοτόµες προτάσεις και ουτοπικά όνειρα αρχιτεκτονικών εκφράσεων εξερευνώντας τα θεµελιώδη θέµατα του χρόνου, του χώρου και της ύπαρξης.
Ένα πρώτο δείγµα από τις πιο συναρπαστικές θεµατικές του Φεστιβάλ, την Τεχνητή Νοηµοσύνη είναι ο τρόπος µε τον οποίο τα drones θα µεταµορφώσουν τις πόλεις. Οι «εναέριοι αυτοκινητόδροµοι» θα αποσυµφορήσουν τους δρόµους καθώς οι µεταφορές και οι ανθρώπινες µετακινήσεις στρέφονται στους αιθέρες. Η αρχιτεκτονική θα αλλάξει εντελώς καθώς οι ισόγειες είσοδοι θα αντικαθίστανται από τις ταράτσες, όπου θα υπάρχουν χώροι προσγείωσης. Ισχυρό πλεονέκτηµα, ή µια απειλή για την ιδιωτικότητα και την ασφάλειά µας;
Το δίπολο άνθρωπος-φύση εξερευνάται µέσα από ταινίες µικρού µήκους που διερευνούν πώς
εξελίχθηκε η βιοµηχανία ξυλείας µε την πάροδο του χρόνου, εξετάζοντας το πώς η ξυλεία συνδέεται µε χρόνιες συνθήκες εκµετάλλευσης, αποικιοκρατίας και καταναλωτισµού, και ταυτόχρονα δίνοντας µας ένα έναυσµα να σκεφτούµε τους ανθρώπους υπό το πρίσµα των δέντρων, αµφισβητώντας τη δική µας αίσθηση κυριαρχίας, στην λογική της προστασίας αυτών των σύνθετων οικοσυστηµάτων, που είναι τόσο απαραίτητα για την δική µας επιβίωση.
ΣΥΖΗΤΗΣΕΙΣ
Στην λογική του Learning by Dialoguing (Μάθηση µέσω διαλόγου), πολλά τα θέµατα που θα τεθούν στις συζητήσεις:
Πως σχεδιάζουµε τις συναισθηµατικές και πρακτικές πτυχές της ζωής στο διάστηµα; Πόσο σηµαντική είναι η διεπιστηµονική προσέγγιση και η δηµιουργική επαφή ανόµοιων επιστηµονικών πεδίων στους πολιτιστικούς µετασχηµατισµούς µιας ταχέως µεταβαλλόµενης εποχής; Ποιο µπορεί να είναι ένα αναµενόµενο µελλοντικό σενάριο δεδοµένου ότι µέσα από συνεχείς ψηφιακές και πολιτιστικές αλλαγές επηρεάζεται ο τρόπος µε τον οποίο εργαζόµαστε; Θα είναι τα γραφεία του
αύριο πιο «έξυπνα» ή πιο ανθρώπινα ή και τα δύο; Με ποιους τρόπους η έννοια της σύγχρονης οικιακής ζωής εµπλουτίζεται µέσω της βιωµατικής εµπειρίας µιας σύγχρονης φιλοξενίας; Ποιος είναι ο ρόλος του design στη γεφύρωση αυτών των δύο συνθηκών; Ποιός ο ρόλος των Living Rituals, ως βιωµατικός καταλύτης της φιλοξενίας; Πώς µπορεί το design να είναι ο κινητήρας προώθησης µιας ψυχικής εξατοµικευµένης εµπειρίας; Πώς αντιµετωπίζουµε την έννοια µιας ανατρεπτικής αρχιτεκτονικής που διασχίζει τα όρια µεταξύ επιστηµονικών κλάδων, ως µια µορφή κοινωνικής τέχνης; Πώς εξοικειωνόµαστε µε την κληρονοµιά του µοντέρνου προσαρµόζοντάς την στις ανάγκες του σήµερα; Πως αυτό µπορεί να αποτελέσει µέρος ενός αρχιτεκτονικού προγράµµατος για παιδιά και νέους ως πιθανό µέσο αλλαγής του τρόπου που βλέπουµε, κατανοούµε και κρίνουµε τον περίγυρο µας; Από ψυχολογική άποψη ποιός ο ρόλος της αρχιτεκτονικής στο χτίσιµο ταυτότητας σε σχέση µε τις έννοιες της µονιµότητας και της αλλαγής;
ΕΡΓΑΣΤΗΡΙΑ / ΠΕΡΙΠΑΤΗΤΙΚΕΣ ΠΕΡΙΗΓΗΣΕΙΣ / ΠΟΔΗΛΑΤΟΔΡΟΜΙΕΣ
Ταυτόχρονα θα πραγµατοποιηθούν δράσεις σε εξωτερικούς χώρους µε αφετηρία κεντρικά σηµεία της Αθήνας, όπως περιπατητικές περιηγήσεις στην πόλη µε τίτλο “Hotel Village” σε συνεργασία µε το περιοδικό Desired Landscapes, σε µια σειρά από µοντέρνα µεταπολεµικά και σύγχρονα κτίρια του 19ου αιώνα – τα οποία γρήγορα ανακαινίστηκαν και µετατράπηκαν σε ξενοδοχεία κατά την διάρκεια των τελευταίων τριών ετών. Μέσω της αρχιτεκτονικής και της τυπογραφίας, συλλογικών ιστοριών, αστικών µύθων και προφορικού λόγου, αυτός ο περίπατος θα διερευνήσει τις έννοιες της κοινότητας, του τουρισµού, της κατοίκησης και της γειτνίασης, επιχειρώντας να σκιαγραφήσει το πολυπρόσωπο πορτραίτο της σύγχρονης Αθήνας.
Ποδηλατοδροµίες αρχιτεκτονικού ενδιαφέροντος υπό τον τίτλο “Riding Athens: Architectural eBike Tour” σε συνεργασία µε το Solebike και το Ελληνικό Ινστιτούτο Αρχιτεκτονικής που έχουν ως σκοπό να ενεργήσουν ως πυξίδα, παρέχοντας τις συντεταγµένες µιας διαδροµής που αναδύει νέες προοπτικές, ανακαλύπτοντας εκ νέου την προσωπικότητα και µεταµόρφωση της πόλης. Ιστορικά και σύγχρονα αθηναϊκά κτίρια, δρόµοι και γειτονιές αφηγούνται ένα ταξίδι κοινωνικοπολιτικών αλλαγών.
Επιπλέον,το MDFF Greece—Athens σε συνεργασια µε το Big Olive Athens παρουσιάζει ένα εργαστήριο µε πρωταγωνιστές τους κατοίκους και τους επισκέπτες εκάστοτε γειτονιών υπό τον τίτλο «Η Τέχνη του Περπατήµατος. Οι Φλανέρ των Αθηνών» (Artful Walking. The Athenian Flaneurs). Ένα βιωµατικό, στοχαστικό και εικαστικό εργαστήριο το οποίο ανασύρει ερωτήµατα όπως: Τι σηµαίνει να είναι κανείς παρών/ούσα εδώ και τώρα; Πώς αλλάζει η εµπειρία ενός τόσου γνωστού
και “οικείου µέρους” όταν αποµακρύνουµε τη σκέψη µας από καθετί θορυβώδες που αποσπά την προσοχή µας στην καθηµερινότητα, καθώς την ίδια στιγµή ανοίγονται νέοι αισθητήρες που επιτρέπουν την πρόσληψη µιας νέας πληροφορίας και ενός νέου ερεθίσµατος; Πώς σχετιζόµαστε µε το περιβάλλον γύρω µας; Πώς παρατηρούµε και σε τι πρέπει να εστιάζουµε; Πόσο καλά ξέρουµε τα µέρη και τους δρόµους που ήδη γνωρίζουµε;
Το εργαστήριο θα εξερευνήσει την περιοχή του Παγκρατίου, ιδιαίτερα την σύνδεση µεταξύ της αστικής συνοικίας των Ανακτόρων και της hip γειτονιάς που βρίσκεται ανατολικά του Παναθηναϊκού Σταδίου.
• Όλες οι βασικές λεπτοµέρειες του τελικού προγράµµατος — το οποίο αναµένεται να εµπλουτιστεί µε νέους χώρους και δράσεις— θα ανακοινωθούν σύντοµα, λαµβάνοντας υπόψην τα νέα µέτρα προστασίας.
• Κάθε mini-event/activity δεν θα υπερβαίνει τον προβλεπόµενο αριθµό συµµετεχόντων βάσει του νόµου ενώ τα µέτρα προστασίας COVID-19 θα τηρούνται αυστηρά σύµφωνα µε όλες τις προδιαγραφές που ορίζονται από το Υπουργείο Πολιτικής Προστασίας και τον ΕΟΔΥ. Θα τηρηθεί σειρά προτεραιότητας λόγω περιορισµένου αριθµού συµµετεχόντων.
Η πρώτη διοργάνωση του MDFF Greece—Athens, που θα διεξαχθεί το 2021, (Οι ηµεροµηνίες θα ανακοινωθούν σύντοµα), µε τίτλο «Φως-Προβάλλοντας το σύγχρονο µέλλον µας», τελείται υπό την αιγίδα του Δήµου Αθηναίων, της Ιταλικής Πρεσβείας, του Ιταλικού Μορφωτικού Ινστιτούτου,
του Ελληνο-Ιταλικού Επιµελητηρίου Αθηνών, του Υπουργείου Πολιτισµού και Αθλητισµού, του Ελληνικού Οργανισµού Τουρισµού, της Γενικής Γραµµατείας Έρευνας και Τεχνολογίας µε σκοπό να διερευνήσει την τρέχουσα πραγµατικότητα και τον σύγχρονο τρόπο ζωής σε όλες τις εκφάνσεις
τους.
Η διοργάνωση, θα περιλαµβάνει περισσότερες από 20 προβολές ταινιών µικρού και µεγάλου µήκους, ντοκιµαντέρ και βιογραφιών, καθώς και διάφορες οµιλίες µε διεθνής και Έλληνες καλεσµένους, εργαστήρια, συζητήσεις και παράλληλες δράσεις.
Στο κυρίως του πρόγραµµα καταπιάνεται µε θεµατικές ενότητες όπως είναι η Αρχιτεκτονική, το Design, η Βιωσιµότητα, η Τεχνητή Νοηµοσύνη, η Αστική ζωή, η Βιογραφία πρωταγωνιστών του design και της αρχιτεκτονικής, το δίπολο Άνθρωπος – Φύση, η Τέχνη, η Τέχνη της σκέψης. Μια επιπλέον σηµαντική θεµατική ενότητα της διοργάνωσης είναι το «Μήνυµα του Αρεσίµπο» (Arecibo Message),από τον παγκοσµίως γνωστό σχεδιαστή και καλεσµένο επιµελητή Michael Anastassiades.
Κατά τη διάρκεια της εκδήλωσης θα γίνουµε µάρτυρες — εντός και εκτός οθόνης — εναλλακτικών τρόπων ζωής, φιλοσοφίας, φιλοδοξίας, ονείρων, τοπίων, πόλεων και βιογραφιών που «νοµιµοποιούν» τη διαφορετικότητα, επικοινωνούν εναλλακτικές και προτείνουν λύσεις.
ΤΙ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΤΟ Milano Design Film Festival
Το Milano Design Film Festival (MDFF) γεννήθηκε το 2013 για να ορίσει ένα πολυαναµενόµενο ετήσιο ραντεβού µε τον κινηµατογράφο και το design στο Μιλάνο. Η τετραήµερη διοργάνωση, η οποια ανοίγει µε µια λαµπερή εκδήλωση στην Triennale di Milanο, συγκεντρώνει ιστορίες αρχιτεκτόνων και σχεδιαστών, στιλ και avant-garde κινήµατα, εξετάζοντας παράλληλα κοινωνικά και περιβαλλοντικά ζητήµατα.
To Milano Design Film Festival (MDFF), έχοντας ταξιδέψει σε διάφορες πόλεις του κόσµου — Buenos Aires, Tokyo, Hong Kong, London, Barcelona, Madrid, Cairo, Shanghai, Paris, Seoul, Beijing, Jerusalem, Stockholm κ.α. – έρχεται για πρώτη φορά στην Ελλάδα και συγκεκριµένα στην Αθήνα, υπό τον τίτλο Milano Design Film Festival Greece (MDFF Greece), διευρύνοντας την επιτυχηµένη ιδέα και δοµή του MDFF, µέσα από µια σειρά µελλοντικών σταθµών σε Ελλάδα και Κύπρο.
Το MDFF Greece, και η καλλιτεχνική διευθύντρια Άννη Μαρκιτάνη, φιλοδοξεί να σχηµατίσει την ελληνική κοινότητα του MDFF µέσα από ένα πλούσιο πρόγραµµα προβολών, συζητήσεων και συνεργασιών µεταξύ οργανισµών και κοινοτήτων που φροντίζουν να προβάλουν πρωτοποριακά εγχειρήµατα, καλλιτεχνικά κινήµατα και διεθνείς προσωπικότητες, µέσα από τα οποία αναδύονται κοινοί τόποι και προσελκύονται συλλογικότητες που βλέπουν την Αθήνα σαν ένα δηµιουργικό χώρο δράσης και παρουσίας ιδεών µε σκοπό να ενεργοποιήσουν σχεσιακά και επενδυτικά µοντέλα.
Το MDFF Greece—Athens µοιράζεται σκέψεις, ιδέες και ιστορίες από το πεδίο του Design µέσω της τέχνης του λόγου και του κινηµατογράφου, δηµιουργώντας νέα σηµεία αναφοράς και αναδεικνύοντας ερωτήµατα που προκύπτουν από την πολυµορφική, πολυπολιτισµική και πολυθεµατική του ταυτότητα.
Ακολουθώντας τη µέθοδο «Μάθηση µέσω παρακολούθησης» και «Μάθηση µέσω Διαλόγου» η εκδήλωση βασίζεται στην αξία και τη δυναµική της κινηµατογραφικής γλώσσας µέσα στην ψηφιακή εποχή. Το εν λόγω εγχείρηµα λειτουργεί αφενός ως κόµβος επικοινωνίας και διεπιστηµονικότητας µεταξύ αρχιτεκτόνων, σκηνοθέτων, παραγωγών, ντιζάινερ, καλλιτεχνών, ερευνητών, εκπαιδευτικών και επιχειρηµατιών, αφετέρου ως κανάλι προβολής της σύγχρονης
τάσης και δηµιουργικότητας σηµαντικών επιστηµονικών πεδίων. Απευθύνει ένα κάλεσµα σε όλους τους επαγγελµατίες του χώρου, αλλά και σε όσους θεωρούν ένα τέτοιο γεγονός ως µια µοναδική ευκαιρία για να γνωρίσουν τον κόσµο του design και της αρχιτεκτονικής µέσα από τον κινηµατογράφο ή, και αντίστροφα, να αξιοποιήσουν τον κινηµατογράφο ως εργαλείο εξοικείωσης µε τον κόσµο της αρχιτεκτονικής και του design.
Σκοπός του Milano Design Film Festival Greece—Athens είναι να καταδείξει ότι το design δεν είναι ένα επάγγελµα αλλά µια ολόκληρη φιλοσοφία και προσέγγιση. Όλα τα στοιχεία του κόσµου γύρω µας, οτιδήποτε χρησιµοποιούµε και αφορά τη ζωή µας, συνδέονται µε το design.

Screenings, discussions, workshops, walking tours and architectural bike tours in various places around the city of Athens.
On March 2020, two weeks prior to the first-ever, edition, of the Milano Design Film Festival Greece in Athens, the festival was postponed, due to the severity of the pandemic—announcing its new event dates for: 5-8 November 2020.
In the meantime, new collaborators and supporters have emerged, providing us with the opportunity to enrich the pre-existing programme, and to form the first, MDFF community, in Greece. Today, with the exacerbation of the situation concerning Covid-19, and the austere measures that have been adopted, the international programme of MDFF Greece–Athens, is faced once more—along side many other cultural programmes around the world—with the pressing dilemma: either to opt for a digital festival edition—presenting the entire programme online, or, to transfer it as a physical event, to a later date, once again—only this time in 2021.
The MDFF Greece–Athens team, chose a middle-way: to transfer its main event to the Benaki Museum and the Greek Film Archive for 2021 but in the meantime, it has created a pre-festival programme titled, “Design in Film around the city of Athens”, which will serve as a precursor of the main event: A prelaunch series consisting of mini-event screenings, discussions, workshops, walking tours and architectural bike routes, providing the public with a first “taste” of MDFF, for all which is to follow in 2021 during the key even —whilst showcasing a unique way of viewing and experiencing, the identity of MDFF.
Most of these activities will take place in physical spaces or in outdoor locations in Athens; whilst some will be held online.
As the artistic director of MDFF Greece & Cyprus, Annie Markitanis, noted “Todays unfavourable conditions, have been the springboard, for an exchange of thoughts and ideas, with organisations/institutions/spaces, and people who support initiatives, of social and cultural interest, and share our passion for the transformative power of the world, contained within the concept and notion of “design”. Our aim is to keep our contact with the city “alive”, and to “marry” the con tent with the philosophy and identity of each particular institution, and consequentially with the philosophy of MDFF Greece–Athens”.
The prelaunch mini-event series, curated by MDFF Greece, will take place on 2 — 8 November, 2020, in collaboration with public and private organisations in Athens, presenting a rich content of screenings, discussions, workshops, bike routes and walking tours with an underlying architectural theme.
Some of the creative & cultural partners involved in the prelaunch week of mini-events are: The Italian Cultural Institute in Athens, the Municipality of Athens Maker Space, Museum Vorre, InMind Headquarters & Showroom (Future of Work Design Week in collaboration with Archisearch & Design Ambassador), Shila Hotel, Blue Cycle Lab, French Institute of Greece (Digital Event), Atelier Cycladon 8 / Workshop Dionisis Sotovikis, Architecture Kids Athens (AKA), Typical Organization for Standards & Order, Esperinos, Shedia home, and the European Cultural Center (Digital Event).
Both on and off screen, we will get a first taste of varying stories; ideas, thoughts, ways of life, innovations, and knowledges.
In the logic of “Learning by Watching” films based on principles of social, economic and ecological sustainability, will be screened, hoping to motivate and inspire the younger generations to reconsider the way in which they approach environmental challenges, such as that of plastic waste (Design and Sustainability, Sections).
In the Design Section, the films deal with the creation of innovative materials as well as design in dialogue with the daily life of an astronaut.
In the Architecture Section, important architects discuss what it means to transform an established heritage and change the way, in which we understand cities and architecture.
At the same time, 530 residencies, which have literally been transposed, will function as the starting point for us to discover, new ways to inhabit and live in the city.
Other examples, will “marry” two seemingly opposing arts: dance and architecture. Meanwhile, a series of video-interviews with leading representatives of architecture, will present pioneering proposals and utopian dreams, of architectural expression—exploring the fundamental issues of time, space and existence.
A first taster, on one of the Festival’s most fascinating themes, Artificial Intelligence, is the way in which drones will transform the city. The “aerial highways” will decongest roads, as transportation and human commotion, turn to the aether. Architecture itself will change completely, as groundfloor entries, will be replaced by terraces, on which there will be landing zones. A powerful advantage to humanity, or a threat to our privacy and safety?
The human vs. nature dipole, is explored through short-films which investigate how the timber industry, has evolved over time, examining how the timber industry is connected to chronic conditions of exploitation, colonialism and consumerism, whilst at the same time, providing us with an incentive to re-consider humanity, though the prism of trees—contesting our own sense of sovereignty, in the logic of protecting these complex ecosystems— essential to our own survival.
DISCUSSIONS
In the logic of Learning through Dialogue, many are the topics to be discussed:
How do we schedule the emotional and practical aspects of life in space? How important is the multi-disciplinary approach and the creative contact between dissimilar scientific fields, in the cultural reformation of a rapidly changing era? What could possibly be, an expected future scenario—taking into consideration, that through continuous digital and cultural changes, the way in which we work, is influenced? Will tomorrow’s offices be “smarter”, more humane, or both? In what ways, is the concept of modern, home life, enriched through empirical experience of a contemporary hospitality? What is the role of design in bridging these two conditions? What is the role of Living Rituals, as an experiential catalyst of hospitality? How can design be the driving force behind a personalised mental and spiritual experience? How do we approach the concept of subversive architecture that crosses the boundaries, between scientific disciplines—as a form of social art? How do we get acquainted with the heritage of the modern, by adapting to the needs of today? How can this constitute, as part of an architectural programme, for children and the young, as a possible means of change, on the way we view, understand and judge, our surroundings? From a psychological standpoint, what is the role of architecture, in the construction of our identity—with regards to the concepts of permanence and change?
WORKSHOPS / WALKING TOURS / BIKE ROUTES
At the same time, outdoor activities will take place, with departure points, central locations of Athens—such as walking tours in the city, titled “Hotel Village” in collaboration with Desired Landscape magazine, in a series of modern, post-war and neo-classical 19th century buildings— which where quickly, renovated and converted into hotels, during the past three years. Through the architecture and typography, of collective stories, urban myths and oral tradition, this walkabout will explore the concepts of community, tourism, housing and the neighbourhood, attempting to outline, the multifaceted portrait of contemporary Athens.
Cycling routes of an architectural interest, under the title “Riding Athens: Architectural e-Bike Tour” in collaboration with Solebike and the Hellenic Institute of Architecture, whose main aim is to act as compass—providing the coordinates of a route, from which new perspectives emerge —re-discovering the personality and transformation of the city. Historical and modern Athenian buildings, roads and neighbourhoods, narrate a journey of socio-political changes.
Additionally, MDFF Greece–Athens, in collaboration with Big Olive Athens, presents an urban workshop, starring the residents and visitors of each neighbourhood, under the title “Artful Walking. The Athenian Flaneurs”. An experiential, contemplative and visually-artistic workshop, which evokes questions, such as: What does it mean for one to be present, in the here and now?
How does the experience, of such a well-known and “familiar place,” change, when we move our thoughts away, from everything which is noisy—which distracts our attention from everyday life—whilst at the same time, new sensory receptors are opened, which allow for the reception of
new information—a new stimulus?
How do we associate to the environment around us?
How do we observe, and what, should we focus our observation on?
How aware are we, of the places and roads we already know?
The workshop will explore the are of Pangrati—especially, the particular bond between the bourgeoise neighbourhood of the Old Royal Palace (Hellenic Parliament & National Garden) and the hip-neighbourhood, located east of the Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro).
* Each mini-event will not exceed the number provided by law, and the COVID-19 protection measures will be strictly applied, as per all the specifications set by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection and the National Public Health Organization (ΕΟΔΥ). Due to limited attendance allowance, a priority order of participation will be followed.

The first event of MDFF Greece–Athens, which is to be held in 2021 (Dates to be announced soon) titled “Lights On—Projecting our Contemporary Future”, held under the auspices of the Municipality of Athens, the Italian Embassy, Italian Cultural Institute of Athens, Hellenic-Italian Chamber of Athens, Ministry of Culture and Sports, Greek National Tourism Organisation, and the General Secretariat for Research and Technology, and whose purpose is, to investigate our current reality and the contemporary living—in all of their manifestations.
The event will include, over 20 screenings of short and feature films, documentaries and biopics, as well as various lectures, workshops, discussions and parallel activities.
In its main programme, it deals with issues and thematic sections such as Architecture, Design, Sustainability, Artificial Intelligence, Urban Life, Biopics of protagonists/masters in the design and architecture scene, the dipole of Man & Nature, Art, the Art of Thinking.
An additional important thematic section of the event, will be the “Arecibo Message”, from the world-renowned designer and guest curator of MDFF Greece–Athens, Michael Anastassiades.
During the main event, we will become witnesses—on and off screen—of alternative ways of life, philosophies, ambitions, dreams, landscapes, cities and biographies, which “legitimate” diversity—communicating alternatives and proposing solutions.
ABOUT Milano Design Film Festival
Milano Design Film Festival (MDFF) was born in 2013 to set an eagerly awaited yearly rendezvous
with cinema and Design in Milan.
A four-day event — preceded by a grand opening at the Triennale di Milano— that brings together stories of architects and designers, styles, avant-garde movements, and investigations into major social issues.
Having already traveled to different cities around the world — Buenos Aires, Tokyo, Hong Kong, London, Barcelona, Madrid, Cairo, Shanghai, Paris, Seoul, Beijing, Jerusalem, Stockholm etc., design and cinema arrive in Athens, Greece hand in hand, under the title Milano Design Film Festival Greece (MDFF Greece) expanding MDFF’s successful concept and format through a series of future stopovers around Greece and Cyprus.

MDFF Greece and its artistic director Annie Markitanis, aspire to shape the Greek community of MDFF, through a rich programme of screenings, discussions and collaborations, between organisations and communities, who are responsible for the promotion of pioneering ventures; artistic movements and international personalities—through which common places emerge, and collectives who see Athens as a creative space of action and presence of ideas, are attracted to— with a main purpose of function, the activation of relational and investment models.
MDFF Greece–Athens shares thoughts, ideas and stories from the field of Design, through the arts of speech and the 7th Art—creating new benchmarks, whilst highlighting questions arising, through its multifaceted, multicultural and multidisciplinary identity.
Following the method of “Learning by Watching” and “Learning by Dialoguing”, the event is based on the values and impetus of the cinematic language, in the digital age. This project, serves, one the one hand; as a hub of communication between architects, designers, directors, producers, artists, researchers, educators and entrepreneurs—and on the other; as a channel for promoting, the contemporary trend and creativity, of important scientific fields. An open, to all professionals of the field—but also to whomever considers, such an event, a unique opportunity, to meet the world of design and architecture—though cinema; or conversely—to utilise cinema as a tool; to get acquainted with the world of architecture and design.
The goal is to address the audience with the idea that Design is not a profession, but rather an attitude; that everything around us, everything we use, and everything that concerns our lives is bound to Design.
