Dimitris Kontodimos is an artist that recently graduated from the Master of Arts of Athens School of Fine Arts’s program. His master thesis, titled: “+1 // Impressions of everyday life”, uses the urban landscape as a research field, from where he draws elements and fragments, that he redefines, by creating new images and narratives of the everyday city life. 

My work, starting with a process of wandering in the city, seeks a different narrative of the urban landscape.

From the everyday, universal existence of the city, I reach my own personal gaze, redefining the objects, the information and the contexts that define them.

Objects and information that I draw from the public space, lose their primary functional role as I put them under a redefining framework, creating new possible readings.

The objects I usually choose are mainly constructive materials or fragments of the city itself, as well as products of urban culture. Morphological elements of the cities, both in their structural part and in their epidermal appearances, are a point of intersection through my reasoning.

Borrowing elements from architecture, the mood for notes on the streets, the clothing but also the urban culture in general, I create images in which the sculptural process coexists with the experience of the urban environment. Thus, concepts such as the experience of living in the city, the structure and spatial planning come to converse with the visual form, through everyday objects, seemingly diverse elements that, however, together compose the whole narrative of the city. The latter constitutes a place of action, where bribery converses with monumentality, the everyday with the ephemeral, as a chronology in history.

The memory of everyday life is the starting point for this unit.

The recruits and the elements that one comes in contact with in the urban landscape, often go unnoticed.

This concerns both the elements themselves and the very condition of the coexistence of heterogeneous elements that all together compose the whole of the city.

It is the space which is produced by the meeting of all its individual elements. The works of this section constitute a poetic imprint, through my point of view, of seemingly diverse, or not, elements creating a personal narrative of the daily experience of the city, re-signifying materials, their uses and memories.

Η δουλειά μου, με αφετηρία μια διαδικασία περιπλάνησης στην πόλη, αναζητά μια διαφορετική αφήγηση για το αστικό τοπίο.

Από την καθημερινή, οικουμενική υπόσταση της πόλης, φτάνω στην δική μου προσωπική ματιά, επαναπροσδιορίζοντας τα αντικείμενα, τις πληροφορίες και τα συγκείμενα που τα ορίζουν.

Αντικείμενα και πληροφορίες που αντλώ από τον δημόσιο χώρο, χάνουν τον πρωταρχικό λειτουργικό τους ρόλο καθώς τα θέτω κάτω από ένα επαναπροσδιοριστικό πλαίσιο, δημιουργώντας νέες πιθανές αναγνώσεις.

Τα αντικείμενα που επιλέγω, είναι κυρίως δομικά υλικά ή σπαράγματα της ίδιας της πόλης, καθώς και προϊόντα της αστικής κουλτούρας. Μορφικά στοιχεία των πόλεων, τόσο στο δομικό κομμάτι τους όσο και σε επιδερμικές εκφάνσεις τους, αποτελούν σημείο τομής στην συλλογιστική μου.

Δανειζόμενος έτσι στοιχεία από την αρχιτεκτονική, την διάθεση για σημειώσεις στους δρόμους, τον ρουχισμό αλλά και την αστική κουλτούρα εν γένει, δημιουργώ εικόνες στις οποίες συνυπάρχουν η γλυπτική διαδικασία με την εμπειρία του αστικού περιβάλλοντος. Έτσι, έννοιες όπως η εμπειρία, η δομή και η χωροταξία έρχονται να συνομιλήσουν με την εικαστική φόρμα, μέσα από καθημερινά αντικείμενα, φαινομενικά ετερόκλητα στοιχεία που όλα μαζί όμως συνθέτουν την ολότητα της πόλης. Η τελευταία συγκροτεί ένα τόπο δράσης, όπου η ευτέλεια συνομιλεί με τη μνημειακότητα, το καθημερινό με το εφήμερο, ως ένα χρονολόγιο μέσα στην ιστορία.

 Η μνήμη της καθημερινότητας αποτελεί την αφετηρία για την ενότητα αυτή.

Οι προσλαμβάνουσες και τα στοιχεία που κανείς έρχεται σε επαφή μαζί τους στο αστικό τοπίο, πολλές φορές περνούν απαρατήρητα.

Αυτό αφορά τόσο αυτά τα στοιχεία καθαυτά όσο και την ίδια την  συνθήκη της συνύπαρξης ετερογενών στοιχείων που όλα μαζί συνθέτουν την ολότητα της πόλης.

Είναι ο χώρος ο οποίος παράγεται από την συνεύρεση όλων των επιμέρους στοιχείων της. Τα έργα αυτής της ενότητας συνιστούν μια ποιητική αποτύπωση, υπο την δική μου ματιά, φαινομενικά ετερόκλητων, ή και όχι, στοιχείων δημιουργώντας μια προσωπική αφήγηση της καθημερινής εμπειρίας της πόλης, επανασημασιοδοτόντας υλικά, χρήσεις και μνήμες.
