The aim of the renovation and the interior redesign of The Tower of Psila Alonia in Aigio, Achaea, by the architect Nikos Mourikis, was to revitalize the preserved landmark with respect to its historic identity and to integrate it into contemporary urban life.
The Tower of Psila Alonia – when life overcomes abandonment
The Tower of Psila Alonia plaza is a historic landmark of Aigio. “Psila Alonia” (literal translation: elevated threshing floor) is one of the two main plazas of the city formed around 1920-30s with a panoramic view of the Corinthian bay and the harbour. Being set back from the main commercial street of Mitropoleos with a raw of buildings between them, makes it a quiet and ideal recreational space popular with the inhabitant and a timeless symbol for the city.
The tower predates the plaza, dating back in the 1900s. It is the smallest neoclassical tower in Greece with Neo-Gothic windows and Neo-Medieval construction. During this period the Saxon architect – who later became a Greek national – Ernst Ziller designed a number of buildings in Aigio (Archeological Museum/Old Municipal market and the Cathedrals of Panagia Faneromeni, Esodia of Theotokos, St. Andrew). The Tower is not listed as one of his projects, which makes it more likely that it was designed by his apprentices in the Neo-Romantic style popular in that period.
The Tower was functioning as a meteorological station and a municipal cafe. It was equipped with a seismograph and was collecting data for the Observatory in Athens.
The entrepreneur’s and the architect’s respect for this monument and its revitalisation was the driving inspiration for his renovation and revamping proposal.
In 100 sq.m. we find the wonders of the science of construction, the anti-seismic building techniques of the time, and a rare example of such architecture. The intervention and the step-by-step search for its feasibility and function through the historic identity of this landmark was an act of love, an integration to contemporary urban life, and a boost into the new millennium against the various physical and social forces of obsolescence.
The outdoor sitting arrangement is divided into gradual “zones”.
The northern and western sides of the ground floor are kept open to the public, connecting the interior space directly with the exterior plaza. The eastern and southern sides are used for serving the bar and for a wheelchair ramp access to the bathroom respectively. This functional arrangement is also being followed by the L-shape of the custom-made bar leaving the rest of the space unobstructed.
A separate entrance in the SW corner takes visitors through the narrow stone staircase up on the roof garden, a space that was previously unused and now offers elevated panoramic view of the plaza and the sea both for sunrise and sunset.
The outdoor sitting arrangement is divided into gradual “zones”, from high bar tables with stools near the tower to regular cafe tables and low lounge sofas farther from the building. In the middle of the outdoor sitting space a custom-made exterior bar was added.
The elongated NS axis punctuates the connection between the tower and the open vistas, while the irregular shape creates gathering pockets around an olive tree reminiscent of the “Agnadio” – the 19th century vernacular term for the central part of the plaza.

Ο Πύργος Ψηλών Αλωνίων Αιγίου – όταν η ζωή νικάει την εγκατάλειψη
Ο Πύργος στην πλατεία Ψηλών Αλωνίων είναι ένα ιστορικό τοπόσημο του Αιγίου. Μια από τις δύο κεντρικές πλατείες της πόλης που διαμορφώθηκε γύρω στο 1920-30 και προσφέρει πανοραμική θέα στον Κορινθιακό Κόλπο και το λιμάνι. Μια σειρά από κτίρια βρίσκεται ανάμεσά της και τον κεντρικό εμπορικό δρόμο της Μητροπόλεως, όπου κάνει την πλατεία έναν ήσυχο και δημοφιλή χώρο αναψυχής για τους κατοίκους και ένα διαχρονικό σύμβολο της πόλης.
Ο Πύργος προυπήρχε της πλατείας, κτισμένος στις αρχές του 1900. Είναι ο μικρότερος νεοκλασσικός πύργος στην Ελλάδα με Νεο-Γοτθικά παράθυρα και Νεο-Μεσαιωνική κατασκευή. Εκείνη την περίοδο ο Σάξονας αρχιτέκτων Ερνέστος Τσίλλερ σχεδίασε μια σειρά δημόσιων έργων στο Αίγιο: Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο (Παλιά Δημοτική Αγορά), Μητροπολιτικό Ναό Παναγίας Φανερωμένης, Ναό Εισοδίων της Θεοτόκου, Ναό Αγίου Ανδρέα. Ο Πύργος δεν έχει καταγραφεί στα έργα του, και θεωρείται πιθανόν να έχει σχεδιαστεί από τους μαθητές του. Δούλεψε ως μετεωρολογικός σταθμός και δημοτικό καφενείο προ και μετά πολεμικά.
Ο σεβασμός του αρχιτέκτονα και του επιχειρηματία για αυτό το μνημείο και την αναζωογόνησή του ήταν η έμπνευση για την πρόταση αυτή ανακαίνισης. Σε 100 τ.μ. κρύβεται όλη η μαγεία της επιστήμης των κατασκευών, η στατική του θωράκιση και η σπάνια αρχιτεκτονική του. Μια αρχιτεκτονική υποταγμένη στο μέτρο και την αρμονία.
Η παρέμβαση και η βήμα προς βήμα αναζήτηση της χρήσης μέσα από την ιστορική ταυτότητα του Πύργου ήταν πράξη αγάπης και ένταξης του μνημείου στην νέα χιλιετηρίδα. Του πήραμε από πάνω τον χρόνο και την φθορά της εγκατάλειψης, και το εντάξαμε με κριτήριο το μέτρο στην σύγχρονη ζωή της πόλης. Μόνον έτσι η πλατεία παραμένει κομμάτι του αστικού σχεδιασμού, και δεν μετατρέπεται σε εγκαταλελειμμένο οικόπεδο. Τα κτίρια και οι πλατείες απειλούνται μόνον από την εγκατάλειψη.
Το roof garden, ένας χώρος που μέχρι τώρα δεν είχε χρησιμοποιηθεί, προσφέρει ανεμπόδιστη πανοραμική θέα στην πλατεία και την θάλασσα.
Η βόρεια και δυτική πλευτά του ισογείου παραμένουν ανοιχτές στον κοινό, συνδέοντας άμεσα τον εσωτερικό χώρο με την πλατεία. Η ανατολική και η νότια πλευτά εξυπηρετούν το μπαρ και μια ράμπα AMEA την τουαλέτα αντίστοιχα. Η λειτουργική αυτή διαρύθμιση ακολουθείται και από το ειδικά σχεδιασμένο μπαρ σε σχήμα L αφήνοντας τον υπόλοιπο χώρο ελεύθερο.
Μια ξεχωριστή είσοδος στην ΝΔ γωνία δίνει πρόσβαση στους επισκέπτες μέσα από μια πέτρινη σκάλα στο roof garden, ένας χώρος που μέχρι τώρα δεν είχε χρησιμοποιηθεί και προσφέρει ανεμπόδιστη πανοραμική θέα στην πλατεία και την θάλασσα το δειλινό και την ανατολή.
Η διαμόρφωση των εξωτερικών καθισμάτων έχει γίνει σε σταδιακές ζώνες, με ψηλούς πάγκους και σκαμπό κοντά στον Πύργο, και χαμηλά τραπεζοκαθίσματα και lounge καναπέδες κοντά στην πλατεία. Στην μέση του εξωτερικού καθιστικού χώρου σχεδιάστηκε ένα υπαίθριο μπαρ. Η επιμήκης διάταξη στον άξονα Β-N τονίζει την σχέση του Πύργου με την ανοιχτή θέα, ενώ το ακανόνιστο σχήμα του δημιουργεί επί μέρους γωνιές συγκέντρωσης, γύρω από ένα φυτεμένο ελαιόδεντρο υπενθυμίζοντας το “Αγνάντιο” – όπως ονομαζόταν στα τέλη του 19ου αιώνα ο χώρος της πλατείας.
