The Featured Architect series brings together and showcases creative firms, both international and domestic, that are emerging, being discussed and standing out in the architectural arena today, promoting—with distinctive character, spontaneity, and courage—the current issues that concern contemporary architectural and artistic theory and practice. In the heart of winter, we meet the Chania-based architectural firm inDetail Architecture, on their journey to create a contemporary architectural language that draws on construction details, local tradition and the Mediterranean landscape.
Η Σχεδιαστική Φιλοσοφία / The Design Philosophy
Το γραφείο inDetail Architecture ιδρύθηκε στα Χανιά το 2014 από τον Αντώνη Δυσσεάκη και τον Νίκο Φουρνάρη, με στόχο τη δημιουργία μιας αρχιτεκτονικής γλώσσας που βασίζεται στις κατασκευαστικές λεπτομέρειες, το σύγχρονο λεξιλόγιο και την τοπική παράδοση.
Η φιλοσοφία του γραφείου περιστρέφεται γύρω από τον τρόπο με τον οποίο η σύγχρονη αρχιτεκτονική μπορεί να ενσωματωθεί στο μεσογειακό κτισμένο περιβάλλον και τοπίο.
Τόσο τα αρχιτεκτονικά έργα όσο και τα έργα εσωτερικής διακόσμησης συμμετέχουν σε αυτόν τον διάλογο, εισάγοντας σύγχρονες μορφές μέσα στην Κρητική φύση και νέες υλικότητες σε ιστορικά κτίρια, σεβόμενοι παράλληλα τον χαρακτήρα τους.
Όλα μπορούν να ειδωθούν μέσα από το πρίσμα της κατασκευαστικής υλοποίησης, όπου οι λεπτομέρειες έχουν σημασία και αναδεικνύονται σε κεντρικά στοιχεία της ιδέας κάθε έργου.
Ο χειρωνακτικός τρόπος εργασίας ενισχύει την άμεση σύνδεση με τη διαδικασία της κατασκευής, μέσα από μια διαδικασία «οικοδόμησης» των επιμέρους στοιχείων του έργου σε ένα φυσικό μέσο. Με αυτόν τον τρόπο, οι ιδέες δοκιμάζονται, εξελίσσονται και τελειοποιούνται, έως ότου μεταφραστούν τελικά σε κτισμένη μορφή.
inDetail Architecture was founded in Chania in 2014 by Antonis Dysseakis and Nikos Fournaris, opting to establish an architectural language rooted in construction detail, modern vocabulary, and local tradition. The office’s philosophy revolves around how contemporary architecture can integrate into the Mediterranean built environment and landscape. Both architectural works and interior projects engage in this dialogue, introducing modern forms within Cretan nature and new materiality in historical buildings, while respecting their character.
Everything is seen through the prism of construction implementation, where details matter and are elevated to central elements of each project’s concept. Working by hand approach strengthens the direct connection to the construction process, through a method of “building” the individual elements of the project within a physical medium. In this way, ideas are tested, developed, and refined until they are ultimately translated into built form.

Basilica House in Chania, Greece (2025)
Η μελέτη αφορά στη μετατροπή ενός τριώροφου ενετικού κτίσματος της παλιάς πόλης των Χανίων με καθαρό εμβαδόν μόλις 35τ.μ. σε κατοικία. Στόχος της σύνθεσης ήταν η δημιουργία νέων άνετων χώρων διαβίωσης σε ένα ιδιαίτερα περιορισμένο εσωτερικό, με τις λιγότερες δυνατές επεμβάσεις στο υφιστάμενο κέλυφος και διατηρώντας τα ξύλινα μεσοπατώματα και τη στέγη. Μια στρογγυλή μεταλλική κολώνα, αποτελεί τον πυρήνα μιας σύνθετης κατασκευής που διατρέχει το κτήριο καθ’ ύψος, διαδραματίζοντας πολλαπλό ρόλο στο αρχιτεκτονικό σκηνικό. Σύνθετες δοκοί που εκτείνονται από τον άξονα της κολώνας σε διαφορετικές κατευθύνσεις παραλαμβάνουν τα φορτία των υφιστάμενων μεσοπατωμάτων και τον κύριο φωτισμό των χώρων. Η όλη μεταλλική σύνθεση αλλάζει μορφή από σκάλα σε ντουλάπα και πάλι σκάλα, καταλήγοντας να υποστηρίζει το κρεβάτι που μοιάζει να στέκει μετέωρο πάνω από αυτή. Ταυτόχρονα η κολώνα μεταφέρει στο εσωτερικό της ηλεκτρολογικές εγκαταστάσεις που διανέμονται στα ανώτερα επίπεδα μέσα από τις ξύλινες κατασκευές, αφήνοντας ανέπαφο το κέλυφος τους κτηρίου. Το πολύπλοκο αυτό σύστημα βάφεται σε κόκκινους τόνους, τονίζοντας το ρόλο του, ενώ τμήματα του αποκαλύπτονται στον επισκέπτη κατά την κίνηση στους ορόφους.

This project concerns the conversion of a three-storey Venetian building in the Old Town of Chania, with a living area of only 35 sq.m., into a residence. The design sought to create new, comfortable living spaces within a particularly confined interior, through the fewest possible interventions to the existing shell, while preserving the original wooden mezzanine floors and roof structure. At the core of the composition stands a circular metal column — the nucleus of a complex structure that runs vertically through the building and plays multiple roles within the architectural setting. Composite beams extend from the axis of the column in different directions, taking on the loads of the existing mezzanine floors and supporting the main lighting fixtures. This entire metal assembly shifts in form — from staircase to wardrobe and back to staircase — ultimately supporting a bed that appears to hover above it. At the same time, the column conceals the electrical installations, which are distributed to the upper levels through the wooden structures, leaving the historic shell of the building untouched. This intricate system is painted in red tones, accentuating its presence, while glimpses of it are revealed to the visitor in movement between the floors.

Askyfou Retreat in Askyfou Plateau, Crete (2025)
Η μελέτη αφορά την αποκατάσταση ενός λιθόκτιστου κτιρίου και την επανάχρησή του ως παραθεριστική κατοικία στο οροπέδιο Ασκύφου, στον νομό Χανίων. Στο εσωτερικό διακρίνονται χαρακτηριστικά στοιχεία της αρχικής οργάνωσης, όπως η θέση του ξύλινου οντά που λειτουργούσε ως χώρος ύπνου με αποθηκευτικό χώρο στο κατώτερο επίπεδο, ο ξυλόφουρνος και το πατητήρι. Τα στοιχεία αυτά αποτέλεσαν αφετηρία του σχεδιασμού και ενσωματώθηκαν στη νέα χρήση. Κεντρικός άξονας της μελέτης είναι η διατήρηση και ανάδειξη των στοιχείων του παρελθόντος και η βιωματική τους επανερμηνεία μέσα από τη σύγχρονη κατοίκηση. Η επέμβαση επιδιώκει έναν διακριτικό διάλογο ανάμεσα στο παλιό και το νέο, με σεβασμό στην αυθεντικότητα του κελύφους.
The study concerns the rehabilitation of a stone-built building and its reuse as a holiday residence on the Askyfou Plateau, in the Chania regional unit. The building dates back to 1909 and was inhabited until the late 20th century, serving as the home of an agricultural–livestock family. Traces of everyday life have been preserved to this day and constitute key evidence of the building’s historical and functional identity. Inside, characteristic elements of the original layout can still be identified, such as the location of the wooden ontas that functioned as a sleeping area with storage space on the lower level, the wood-fired oven, and the wine press. These elements formed the starting point of the design and were incorporated into the new use. The central concept of the study is the preservation and enhancement of elements of the past and their experiential reinterpretation through contemporary habitation. The intervention seeks a discreet dialogue between old and new, respecting the authenticity of the building envelope.
Monogam – The Bar, in Chania, Greece (2023)
Η στιλπνότητα της λαμαρίνας συναντά την αδρότητα της πέτρας και τη ζεστασιά του ξύλου στο επίμηκες, μικροσκοπικό κόκτειλ μπαρ Monogram στο ιστορικό κέντρο των Χανίων, το οποίο κάτω από την χαρακτηριστική λίθινη οροφή του μοιάζει να στεγάζει τη σοφία χρόνων. Το ιδιαίτερα επίμηκες σχήμα του χώρου σε συνδυασμό με το μικρό πλάτος και τη μορφολογικά κυρίαρχη θολωτή οροφή επεσήμαναν την ανάγκη για απλές, καθαρές χαράξεις στο σχεδιασμό που θα ικανοποιούσαν στο μέγιστο τις απαιτήσεις των χρηστών σε εργονομία και λειτουργικότητα. Η βασική συνθετική ιδέα συνοψίζεται στην αντίστιξη 3 βασικών γεωμετριών με διαφορετικές υλικότητες οι οποίες αρθρώνονται βάσει των λειτουργικών απαιτήσεων και με στόχο την οπτική μεγέθυνση του χώρου μέσω των αντανακλάσεων και της διαφάνειας.

The sleekness of sheet metal meets the roughness of stone and the warmth of wood in the elongated, miniature cocktail bar Monogram, located in the historic center of Chania. Beneath its distinctive stone vaulted ceiling, the space appears to house the accumulated wisdom of time. The highly elongated layout, combined with the narrow width and the morphologically dominant vaulted roof, highlighted the need for simple, clean design lines capable of fully meeting users’ requirements for ergonomics and functionality. The core design concept is distilled into the counterpoint of three fundamental geometries with differing material qualities, articulated according to functional needs and aimed at visually expanding the space through reflection and transparency.

Tsikalaria House in Chania, Greece (2022)
Η κατοικία, που βρίσκεται στα Τσικαλαριά κοντά στα Χανιά, είναι ένα διώροφο κτίριο χτισμένο πάνω σε ένα δίκτυο περασμάτων. Ο σχεδιασμός εστιάζει στην ενίσχυση της λειτουργικότητας, διατηρώντας παράλληλα την αρχική χρήση των χώρων. Στο κατώτερο επίπεδο, ο χώρος ύπνου μετατράπηκε σε ένα κανονικό υπνοδωμάτιο, με συρόμενο πάνελ από ξύλο και υαλοπίνακα, που διατηρεί τη χωρική συνέχεια εξασφαλίζοντας ταυτόχρονα ιδιωτικότητα και έμμεσο φωτισμό. Στον επάνω όροφο, οι χώροι καθιστικού, τραπεζαρίας και κουζίνας σχεδιάζονται με έμφαση στη ρευστότητα, με ένα αναρτημένο τραπέζι να συνδέει την κουζίνα με το καθιστικό. Χρησιμοποιούνται βιομηχανικά υλικά όπως κόντρα πλακέ, ανοξείδωτος χάλυβας και σκυρόδεμα, σε αντίθεση με τις παραδοσιακές υφές του σπιτιού. Αυτή η σύγχρονη εσωτερική προσέγγιση υπογραμμίζει τη σαφή διάκριση από το διατηρημένο εξωτερικό κέλυφος, δημιουργώντας μια αρμονική συνύπαρξη παλιού και νέου, ενώ ταυτόχρονα βελτιώνει τη λειτουργικότητα.
The house, located in Tsikalaria near Chania, is a two-storey building built on a network of passages. The design focuses on enhancing functionality while preserving the original use of spaces. On the lower level, the sleeping area has been transformed into a proper bedroom with a sliding wood and striped glass panel, maintaining spatial continuity while ensuring privacy and indirect light. Upstairs, the living, dining, and kitchen areas are designed for fluidity, with a hanging table connecting the kitchen and living spaces. Industrial materials like plywood, inox steel, and concrete are used, contrasting with the house’s traditional textures. This modern interior approach highlights a clear distinction from the preserved exterior, creating a harmonious blend of old and new while improving functionality.
Parallel Laminae Kokkino Chorio, Chania, Greece (2021)
Το οικιστικό έργο οργανώνεται γύρω από πέντε παράλληλες λιθοδομές, οι οποίες καθορίζουν τόσο τη μορφολογική γλώσσα όσο και το λειτουργικό πλαίσιο του σχεδιασμού. Τα γραμμικά αυτά στοιχεία επιτελούν διττό ρόλο: λειτουργούν ως κύριες και δευτερεύουσες όψεις των κατοικιών, ενώ ταυτόχρονα αποτελούν τη δομική βάση για τις πέργκολες του ισογείου. Οι δύο κατοικίες τοποθετούνται σε μια αλληλοεπικαλυπτόμενη ακολουθία ανάμεσα στις λιθοδομές, δημιουργώντας μια πολυεπίπεδη σύνθεση, όπου η βόρεια όψη κάθε μονάδας επεκτείνεται στην πέργκολα της γειτονικής κατοικίας. Αυτή η συνέχεια διαμορφώνει έναν ρυθμικό διάλογο: το βόρειο επίπεδο κάθε κατοικίας τέμνει την προηγούμενη μονάδα, επαναπροσδιορίζοντας τις δευτερεύουσες όψεις και τις εσωτερικές χωρικές διαιρέσεις. Το μοτίβο επαναλαμβάνεται, υφαίνοντας μια συνεκτική αλλά δυναμική σχέση μεταξύ των δομών.
This residential project is organized around five parallel masonry bands, which define both the architectural language and functional framework of the design. These linear elements serve dual roles: they act as primary and secondary façades for the homes while forming the structural base for ground-floor pergolas. The two residences are positioned in an overlapping sequence between these bands, creating a layered arrangement where each unit’s northern façade extends into the pergola of the adjacent home. This continuity establishes a rhythmic interplay – each residence’s northern plane intersects with the prior unit, redefining secondary façades and internal spatial divisions. The pattern repeats, weaving a cohesive yet dynamic relationship between the structures.
The Authentic Village in Sfakia, Greece (2021)
Με αφετηρία την αρχιτεκτονική κληρονομιά της Σφακιάς, το έργο αντλεί έμπνευση από τις παραδοσιακές σφακιανές τυπολογίες δόμησης, επιδιώκοντας να αναβιώσει την ατμόσφαιρα της παλιάς Χώρας Σφακίων. Παρά τη σχετικά πρόσφατη νομική προστασία της περιοχής, η αρχιτεκτονική της ταυτότητα έχει αλλοιωθεί σε μεγάλο βαθμό από αυθαίρετες και ανεξέλεγκτες κατασκευές κατά τα μεταπολεμικά χρόνια. Ως απάντηση σε αυτή την πραγματικότητα, η μελετητική ομάδα στράφηκε σε ιστορικά αρχεία και τοπικά αρχιτεκτονικά πρότυπα, επανερμηνεύοντάς τα μέσα από ένα σύγχρονο πρίσμα. Το σύνολο συγκροτείται από συμπαγείς διώροφους όγκους, με την πρόσβαση στους ανώτερους ορόφους να γίνεται μέσω χαρακτηριστικών εξωτερικών κλιμακοστασίων, διαμορφώνοντας μια σύνθεση που παραπέμπει σε μικρό οικισμό. Το περιορισμένο οικόπεδο με ακανόνιστα όρια και έντονες υψομετρικές διαφορές— καθόρισε τη χωρική στρατηγική. Τα κτίρια τοποθετούνται κατά μήκος των ορίων του οικοπέδου, απελευθερώνοντας το εσωτερικό για κοινόχρηστους υπαίθριους χώρους και διαδρομές. Στην καρδιά του έργου, μια κεντρική αυλή αναπτύσσεται σε ένα δίκτυο στενών, λιθόστρωτων μονοπατιών που οδηγούν στις εισόδους και στους χώρους φιλοξενίας.

Rooted in the architectural heritage of Sfakia, the project draws inspiration from traditional Sfakian building typologies, seeking to revive the atmosphere of old Chora Sfakion. Despite its recent legal protection, the area’s architectural identity has been significantly altered by unregulated construction in the post-war years. In response, the design team turned to historical records and local precedents, reinterpreting them through a contemporary lens. The complex is composed of compact two-storey volumes, with upper levels accessed via characteristic external staircases, forming a village-like ensemble. The constrained plot, almost entirely enclosed with irregular boundaries, and pronounced level differences, shaped the spatial strategy. Buildings are placed along the perimeter, freeing the interior for shared open spaces and circulation. At the heart of the project, a central courtyard unfolds into a network of narrow, stone-paved paths leading to the entrances and guest accommodations.

Monogram Café, in Chania, Greece (2017)
Το Monogram είναι ένα καφέ και πρατήριο που βρίσκεται στην Παλιά Πόλη των Χανίων. Κεντρική φιλοσοφία του είναι η παρασκευή και το φρεσκοάλεσμα του καφέ μπροστά στον πελάτη, ώστε να συμμετέχει και να απολαμβάνει ολόκληρη την εμπειρία. Στο πνεύμα αυτό, σχεδιάστηκε μια διάταξη και επίπλωση που ευνοεί την αντίληψη των λειτουργιών από τον πελάτη, με ένα μινιμαλιστικό ύφος που δρα ως φόντο γι’ αυτές. Η κάτοψη οργανώνεται ώστε ο πάγκος παρασκευής να υποδέχεται τους πελάτες, ενώ στο βάθος του χώρου γίνεται το άλεσμα του καφέ, διαλέγοντας από μία βιτρίνα διαφορετικών ποικιλιών. Η βιτρίνα των καφέδων στηρίζεται σε μία πολύ διακριτική κατασκευή από λεπτή λαμαρίνα, πάνω στην οποία ενσωματώνονται τα κουτιά αποθήκευσης. Στο ίδιος ύφος έχουν σχεδιαστεί και μικρά τραπέζια στο εσωτερικό του καταστήματος με στήριξη στον τοίχο. Στις όψεις τοποθετούνται κουφώματα γκιλοτίνες που ανοικτά λειτουργούν και ως πάγκοι σερβιρίσματος.

Monogram is a café and coffee house and shop located in the Old Town of Chania. Its core philosophy is to prepare and grind the coffee in front of the customer, allowing them to fully experience every step of the process. Following this guideline, the shop was designed in a minimal style that acts as a background for what is going on inside. The floor plan is arranged so that the preparation bar welcomes customers, while the grinding takes place directly across the room, where a large showcase of a variety of blends is located. The coffee showcase is made of a discreet structure of thin metal sheets. Small tables are made in the same manner for the customers to sit inside.Facades are designed with guillotine windows, which when open act as serving surfaces.

Dodekanesou House, in Chania, Greece (2015)
Η κατοικία Dodekanesou House βρίσκεται στη ιστορικά εργατική γειτονιά του Κουμ Καπί, στα Χανιά. Το κτίριο τοποθετείται ανάμεσα σε παρόμοιες κατασκευές, με αποτέλεσμα να διαθέτει μόνο μια στενή όψη προς έναν κοινόχρηστο εσωτερικό αύλειο χώρο. Λόγω της περιορισμένης κάτοψης, το κτίριο αναπτύσσεται καθ’ ύψος. Στόχος της μελέτης ήταν η μέγιστη αξιοποίηση του περιορισμένου αυτού χώρου, ώστε να δημιουργηθεί μια κατοικία δύο υπνοδωματίων, κατάλληλη για βραχυχρόνια μίσθωση. Ένα διώροφο κλιμακοστάσιο, τοποθετημένο αμέσως μετά την είσοδο, αποτελεί το κεντρικό στοιχείο του σχεδιασμού. Επιτρέπει τη διείσδυση φυσικού φωτός στο ισόγειο και δημιουργεί μια αίσθηση διαμπερότητας και ανοιχτότητας. Ο φωτισμός αποτέλεσε βασική σχεδιαστική παράμετρο, καθώς ο αριθμός των ανοιγμάτων είναι περιορισμένος και όλα βρίσκονται στους ανώτερους ορόφους. Για την αντιμετώπιση αυτού του περιορισμού, ενσωματώθηκαν φεγγίτες και γυάλινες επιφάνειες, επιτρέποντας στο φυσικό φως να φτάνει έως το ισόγειο.
Dodekanesou House is located in the historically working-class neighbourhood of Koum Kapi, Chania. The building is positioned between similar structures, leaving only a narrow facade facing a shared courtyard. Due to its compact floor plan, the building expands vertically. The project aimed to maximize the use of this limited space in order to create a two-bedroom home suitable for short-term rental. A two-story staircase, located immediately upon entry, forms the central element of the design. It provides natural light to the ground floor and creates a sense of openness. Lighting was a key consideration due to the limited number of windows, all of which are positioned on the upper floors. To address this, skylights and glass surfaces were incorporated to allow natural light to penetrate the ground floor.

Antonis Dysseakis was born in 1991 in Herakleion, Greece. He studied Architectural Engineering at the Technical University of Crete. In 2014 he co-founded inDetail Architecture in Chania with Nikos Fournaris.
Νίκος Φουρνάρης / Nikos Fournaris
Ο Νίκος Φουρνάρης γεννήθηκε το 1985 στη Λάρισα. Σπούδασε Ανακαίνιση και Αποκατάσταση Κτιρίων στην Πάτρα και Αρχιτεκτονική στο Πολυτεχνείο Κρήτης. Το 2014 συνίδρυσε το αρχιτεκτονικό γραφείο inDetail Architecture στα Χανιά με τον Αντώνη Δυσσεάκη.
Nikos Fournaris was born in 1985 in Larissa, Greece. He studied Building Renovation and Restoration in Patras and Architectural Engineering at the Technical University of Crete. In 2014 he co-founded inDetail Architecture in Chania with Antonis Dysseakis.

Ο Βασίλης Τουρλίδας γεννήθηκε το 1990 στο Ρέθυμνο. Σπούδασε στο Τμήμα Πολιτικών Μηχανικών στο Ηράκλειο και στο Τμήμα Αρχιτεκτόνων Μηχανικών στο Πολυτεχνείο Κρήτης. Είναι μέλος της ομάδας inDetail Architecture από το 2021.
Vasilis Tourlidas was born in 1990 in Rethymno, Crete. He studied in the Department of Civil Engineering in Heraklion and Architectural Engineering at the Technical University of Crete. He has been a member of the inDetail Architecture team since 2021.

Η Μάγδα Ντούρα γεννήθηκε το 1989 στην Αθήνα. Σπούδασε Αρχιτεκτονική στο Εθνικό Μετσόβιο Πολυτεχνείο και είναι μέλος της ομάδας inDetail Architecture από το 2022.
Magda Ntoura was born in 1989 in Athens, Greece. She studied Architectural Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens and has been a member of the inDetail Architecture team since 2022.

Ο Γιάννης Κορκίδης γεννήθηκε το 1991 στα Χανιά. Σπούδασε Αρχιτεκτονική στο Πολυτεχνείο Κρήτης και είναι μέλος της ομάδας inDetail Architecture από το 2023.
Yannis Korkidis was born in 1991 in Chania, Greece. He studied Architectural Engineering at the Technical University of Crete and has been a member of the inDetail Architecture team since 2023.
