Constructing Continuities

Today, the life expectancy of the ‘polykatoikia’ con- fronts us with the problem of the renewal of the building stock in the Greek City. The ‘re-insertion’ of a plot in the building production is nevertheless unviable, due to the fragmentation of ownerships and the significantly lower building coefficients. If the ‘polykatoikia’ responded once to the rapid popu- lation growth of the Greek city, today the existing building stock with the appropriate interventions can provide meaningful solutions. The presentation will focus upon operations buer- ger katsota architects have developed or adopted in dealing with the urban and architectural – modernist- reality as well as upon the specifics of their application through the realisation of the ‘Patras Student Studios’ project.
