The following thesis employs a “topographic practice”, to perform a spatial investigation on Mount Ymitos, which lies on the suburbs of the Greek capital, Athens. It critically examines its role as a living ruin, that relates to the city’s historical and mythological past, while it perishes and is reborn through a cycle of fire.

A walk is used as a medium that reveals a mnemonic system of places that link the landscape with the Pyrocene and the Anthropocene. The route of the stroll is dictated by firebreak roads created and maintained by the firefighting service, which run along the Mount and meet atmospheric units of different succession stages that are linked with mythology, history, religion, and politics of Athens.
Moving on foot allows time for the human brain to digest its surroundings and hop around thoughts, memories and experiences. The structure of the thesis, follows the structure of the walk. The selected route walks on the frontier of City and Landscape, and the 5 chapters are distributed along the Mount, depending on site-specific characteristics.
Psychogeography is combined with contemporary theories on fire management, atempting to reveal flaws of modernity, as well as speculate upon a pyro-symbiotic future.
A selection of media including images, videos, sounds and smells of aromatic vegetation are included to represent the discussed landscape and construct its “non-site”.
The shifting climate zones of our warming world increase the frequency of extreme heatwaves and aridity, building up what IPCC report defines as “fire weather“.
This thesis atempts to confront the following challenging questions: Are we doomed to burn? Is there anything we can do?
Drawing sources from contemporary publications, academic research, indigenous fire regimes, as well as realized practices on fire protection and preventive legislation, this work uses the pyrophytic landscape of Ymitos to demonstrate flaws, recognise problems, and reflect on innovative ways of forestry maintenance. There is an urgent need to re-evaluate the relation between fire, landscape and the built environment, and raise the discussion for a multidisciplinary, strategic action.

Η ερευνητική εργασία “Ανθίζοντας μέσα από τις Στάχτες: Το Όρος Υμηττός ως Τοπιακό Μνημείο” που εκπόνησε η Αλεξάνδρα Σουβατζή κατα τη διάρκεια των μεταπτυχιακών της σπουδών στην Αρχιτεκτονική Τοπίου, αναδείχτηκε νικήτρια του Landscape Institute του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου, για το 2022.

Χρησιμοποιώντας τη μέθοδο της “τοπογραφικής πρακτικής”, η εργασία πραγματοποιεί επιτόπια έρευνα στον Υμηττό, ώστε να αναφερθεί με στοχαστικό τρόπο στο μείζον ζήτημα των αυξανώμενων πυρκαγιών. Παράλληλα με την μελέτη του κύκλου φωτιάς που χαρακτηρίζει το τοπίο, αναλογίζεται τη σχέση του Όρους με την πόλη της Αθήνας, και την κοινή τους ιστορία, τους μύθους και τις πολιτικές επιλογές που επηρεάζουν τη μορφή τους.
Ένας περίπατος ακολουθεί τους χωματόδρομους που χάραξε η πυροσβεστική για πυροπροστασία, και διαπερνά τοπία που έχουν πληγεί από πυρκαγιές σε διαφορετικές χρονικές περιόδους. Το στάδιο επανάκαμψης του περιβάλλοντος σε συνδυασμό με τα ιστορικά ευρήματα του Όρους και την θέα προς την πόλη, γίνονται αντικείμενα αναφοράς για την έναρξη ενός διαλόγου για το μέλλον της συμβίωσης σε ένα πυρόφιλο οικοσύστημα.
Εμπνευσμένο από τη θεωρία της “Ψυχογεωγραφίας“, το τεύχος καθαυτό οδηγεί τον αναγνώστη στη διαδρομή και επιχειρεί να αποτυπώσει την αίσθηση του περιπάτου, με τη μορφή φωτογραφιών, βίντεο, ηχογραφήσεων, αλλά και την ενσωμάτωση αρωματικής βλάστησης μέσα στις σελίδες του. Οι φωτογραφίες, οι χάρτες και τα διαγράμματα που επισυνάπτονται είναι πνευματική ιδιοκτησία του συγγραφέα. Το τεύχος περιλαμβάνει φωτογραφίες του επαγγελματία φωτογράφου Ηλία Κωστάρα, με τον οποίο συνεργαστήκαμε σε επιλεγμένες διαδρομές.
