Your home away from home! This is what Third Place will be for the Athenians – and not only. This sense of belonging was the main design inspiration of Amalgama Architects -the architecture studio that undertook the project.
Housed in a large ground floor space of a 1960 apartment building, Third Place is located in the heart of Athens.
The architects created an open-plan space that completely opens up to the city scape. The enveloping glazed shop front removes the boundaries with the exterior, transforming Third Place into an urban space of gathering.
The design choices are enhanced with an industrial aesthetic inspired by the building’s past: exposed concrete columns, concrete levels, terrazzo mosaic floor, custom made steel-lights, visible air ducts and cable trays, enhance an emerging urbanity. The design was based to the understanding of how people will use the overall space, incorporating atmospheric transitions and spatial qualities to succeed changing behaviors.

Avoiding the use of color, the architects have relied instead on a nuanced palette of light grey shades. Strict geometric forms for the heavy constructions and smooth curved ones for the detailing elements -such as the bar façade, the door leading to the inner space and the custom-made lights- soften the harshness of the emerging industrial aesthetic. Underpinned by a minimalist sensibility the monochromatic approach, far from creating a cohesive environment, has created a lyrical interplay of light, depth and textures, giving birth to a scenery of calmness.
“The collaboration with the owners of the venue was held in a harmonious and inspiring way, as their aesthetic and love for the design was important for the outcome”, tell us the architects.
Discreet, geometrical lines create strictly defined spaces enhanced with an architectural purity and sculptural finesse. Every element was carefully considered -the textures, the light, the floor, the materials used, the color palette, the furniture pieces – are all linked in a harmonious way.
The studio was inspired to pair bold furnishings with the venue’s grey-toned surfaces of 20th-century Italian artist Giorgio Morandi, who’s still life paintings feature bright colored objects set against muted backgrounds. The delicate playfulness of the geometric language is enhanced by the use of various blocks of color in the form of tables, chairs and wall tiles, that give a sense of lightness against the brutalism of the concrete surroundings.
The restored terrazzo mosaic floor, which is a typical feature of mid-century Greek residential architecture, juxtapose with the concrete surfaces, the turquoise tiling, the colored furniture and potted plants.
The bathroom, decorated in just one color, from walls to furniture and objects could be a part of CJ’s Hendry Monochrome exhibition. A spatial color story that engages the senses in unexpected ways, devoted to the joy of color. Far from the aesthetic aspect, the question behind the color choice during a time where social, sexual, and gender identities are upturned and questioned was: “in which way one can provide a space that is both neutral and sensual, free from social markers”, the architects added.
Α concrete multi-leveled, gathering space -similar to an open-air urban auditorium- removes the boundaries with the exterior, transforming the venue into an urban space of gathering where the visitors can socialize, drink their coffee and occasionally watch projections of movies and documentaries on the opposite wall. The emerging urbanity is complemented by this concrete platform where the visitors can sit and enjoy their coffee in different ways.

‘Το σπίτι σου μακριά από το σπίτι’. Αυτή η έκφραση υπήρξε η κεντρική ιδέα του σχεδιασμού. Η δημιουργία ενός χώρου που θα αποπνέει την αίσθηση του ανήκειν σε όποιον το επισκέπτεται. Οι αρχιτέκτονες Amalgama-Architects που ανέλαβαν τον σχεδιασμό του χώρου, σε μια αρμονική συνεργασία με τους ιδιοκτήτες, σχεδίασαν έναν χώρο που θα αποτελεί για τους Αθηναίους -και όχι μόνο- το δεύτερο σπίτι τους.
Καταλαμβάνοντας τον ισόγειο χώρο μιας τυπικής αθηναϊκής πολυκατοικίας του 1960, το Third Place βρίσκεται στην καρδιά της πόλης.
Οι αρχιτέκτονες δημιούργησαν έναν εξωστρεφή χώρο που καταργεί τα όρια προς την πόλη και ανοίγεται σε αυτή. Οι τζαμαρίες αναδιπλώνονται προεκτείνοντας το πεζοδρόμιο στο εσωτερικό, μετατρέποντας το Third Place σε ένα αστικό χώρο συνάθροισης. Οι επιλογές όσον αφορά στον σχεδιασμό, αντλούν επιρροές από το παρελθόν του κτηρίου. ‘Χτενιστό’ μπετό για τον φέροντα οργανισμό, μωσαικό δάπεδο το οποίο διατηρείται, μεταλλικά φώτα σχεδιασμένα από τους αρχιτέκτονες ειδικά για τον χώρο, εμφανείς αεραγωγοί και καλώδια ενισχύουν την αστική αίσθηση που αναδύει ο χώρος.
Αποφεύγοντας τη χρήση πολλών χρωμάτων, οι αρχιτέκτονες επέλεξαν γκρι τόνους για όλο τον χώρο. Αυστηρές γεωμετρικές φόρμες για τα φέροντα στοιχεία και απαλές καμπύλες για τις λεπτομέρειες του χώρου. Η μονοχρωματική επιλογή για τον κυρίως χώρο, δημιουργεί μια μινιμαλιστική αισθητική και ένα λυρικό παιχνίδι με το φως, το βάθος και τις υφές, ‘γεννώντας’ ένα περιβάλλον ηρεμίας. Κάθε στοιχείο έχει επιλεχθεί με προσοχή: οι υφές, τα φώτα -που σχεδιάστηκαν από τους αρχιτέκτονες για τον χώρο- το πάτωμα, τα υλικά, η χρωματική παλέτα καθώς και τα έπιπλα, όλα δένουν με ένα αρμονικό τρόπο.
Η επιλογή των έντονων χρωμάτων στα έπιπλα στο γκρι σκηνικό του χώρου, προήλθε από τα έργα του Ιταλού ζωγράφου του 20ου αιώνα Giorgio Morandi, ο οποίος ζωγράφιζε αντικείμενα με έντονα χρώματα σε απαλό φόντο. Το παιχνίδι της γεωμετρικής γλώσσας με τα διάφορα χρώματα στα επιμέρους αντικείμενα που πλαισιώνουν τον χώρο, μαλακώνουν την βιομηχανική αδρότητα που αποπνέει ο χώρος.
Την ίδια μονοχρωματική λογική ακολουθεί και το μπάνιο. Από τους τοίχους μέχρι τα στοιχεία και τα αντικείμενα που το πλαισιώνουν, θα μπορούσε να αποτελεί μέρος της έκθεσης της CJ’s Hendry ‘Monochrome’. Μια χρωματική χωρική εμπειρία που διεγείρει τις αισθήσεις με απρόσμενους τρόπους, αφιερωμένο στη χαρά του χρώματος.
Τέλος, βασικό στοιχείο του χώρου αποτελούν οι κερκίδες από μπετό που βρίσκονται στο εσωτερικό – οι οποίες θυμίζουν ανοιχτό θέατρο της πόλης. Οι κερκίδες ενισχύουν την αστικότητα του χώρου και προτείνουν έναν διαφορετικό τρόπου συνάθροισης στο εσωτερικό ενός χώρου. Αυτή η αναδυόμενη αστικότητα υπήρξε βασική σκέψη πίσω από κάθε επιλογή.
“Βρίσκουμε πολύ ενδιαφέρον στην αναζήτηση του τρόπου με τον οποίο μπορούμε να ενθαρρύνουμε συγκεκριμένες συμπεριφορές μέσω του σχεδιασμού και των υλικών. Θέλαμε το Third Place να αποτελεί ένα μέρος όπου η εμπειρία του καφέ θα μετατρέπεται σε μια αστική πράξη.”
