Architect Andreas Petropoulos was called to turn one of the busiest bars in the historic centre of Kalamata into an all-day coffee bar. He created a new open space while using the concept of the boundary as the core design tool.
The new coffee-bar’s trademark is the pink neon sign of “Φλέρτ!”. Wood and metal details are used to convert the interior into a more cosy and welcoming space, while the existing materiality of the floor and the ceiling is revealed as the original expression of the traditional colourful mosaic and the reinforced concrete composing the atmosphere of a contemporary Mediterranean Bistro.

Φλέρτ! Happened when we were asked to turn one of the busiest bars in the historic center of Kalamata into an all-day coffee bar.
The architectural approach explored the concept of the boundary that emerged as the core design tool. The boundaries of the space were “expanded” to become appropriated by users, host functional uses and determine the store’s relationship with the city.
The standard shop window between interior space and city is redefined. A system of opening glazing frames put together a lively and porous facade, hosting the guests while also maintaining the visual and spatial continuity inside and out.
The inner boundary opposite the main facade expands and acquires substance to accommodate the linear kitchen. All the cooking processes that happen there are projected as choreography in the central space, transforming the kitchen into a background of constant movement.
A contradictory condition is formed at the lateral boundaries of the interior. The border to the right of the entrance is stretched to be turned into a multifunctional counter bar. Τhe border to the left of the entrance is left blank, forming a transparent background. On the one, the boundary hosts the most dynamic and busy point of the space, while on the other side, the boundary is freed and proudly hosts the impressive pink neon sign of “Φλέρτ!”.
As for the project’s materiality, the facade’s structure, the custom constructions of the perimeter counters, and the blinds are expressed with wood in a walnut tone. The base of the perimeter counters is expressed with wooden frame constructions painted to mint colour as a juxtaposition to the whole. Moreover, the choice of various wooden and metal seats with explicit vintage references attempts to convert the interior into a more welcoming space. Finally, the existing materiality of the floor and the ceiling is revealed as the original expression of the traditional colourful mosaic and the reinforced concrete composing the atmosphere of a contemporary Mediterranean Bistrot.

Φλέρτ! – Συνθέτοντας ένα σύγχρονο Μεσογειακό Bistro.
Ο αρχιτέκτονας Ανδρέας Πετρόπουλος, κλήθηλε να μετατρέψει ένα μπαρ στο ιστορικό κέντρο της Καλαμάτας, σε all-day coffee bar. Για τη δημιουργία του νέου χώρου, η έννοια του “ορίου” χρησιμοποιήθηκε ως βασικό συνθετικό εργαλείο, τόσο οσον αφορά τα εσωτερικά όρια του χώρου όσο και η σχέση του με την πόλη.
Το σημείο κατατεθέν του νέου μαγαζιού εστίασης είναι η νέον πινακίδα με το όνομα “Φλέρτ!”. Ξύλο και μέταλλο χρησιμοποιήθηκαν στο εσωτερικό δημιουργώντας ένα ζεστό και φιλόξενο χώρο, ενώ αποκαλύφθηκε το αρχικό μωσαικό πάτωμα και τα στοιχεία ανεπίχριστου σκυροδέματος που ολοκληρώνουν την εικόνα και την ατμόσφαιρα του σύγχρoνου μεσογειακού Bistro.

Στο ιστορικό κέντρο της Καλαμάτας μας ζητήθηκε να μετατρέψουμε ένα από τα πιο πολυσύχναστα μπαρ της πόλης σε ένα all – day coffee bar.
Η αρχιτεκτονική προσέγγιση αναπτύχθηκε πάνω στη διερεύνηση της έννοιας του ορίου το οποίο και αναδεικνύεται ως κύριο συνθετικό εργαλείο. Τα όρια του ενιαίου χώρου του καταστήματος “διαστέλλονται”, οικειοποιούνται απο τους χρήστες, φιλοξενούν λειτουργικές χρήσεις και καθορίζουν τη σχέση του με την πόλη.
Το τυπικό όριο μεταξύ εσωτερικού χώρου και πόλης επαναπροσδιορίζεται. Ένα σύστημα ανοιγόμενου υαλοστασίου διαμορφώνει μια ζωντανή και πορώδης όψη, που αποτελεί κύριο χώρο στάσης των θαμώνων ενώ παράλληλα διατηρεί την οπτική αλλά και χωρικη συνέχεια του μέσα με το έξω.
Το εσωτερικό όριο αντικριστά της μοναδικής όψης, διαστέλλεται και αποκτά υπόσταση για να φιλοξενήσει την γραμμική κουζίνα. Όλες οι διεργασίες παρασκευής προβάλλονται ως χορογραφία στον κεντρικό χωρο μετατρέποντας την κουζίνα σε ένα φόντο συνεχούς κίνησης.
Στα πλευρικά όρια του εσωτερικού χώρου διαμορφώνεται μία αντιθετική συνθήκη. Το όριο δεξιά της εισόδου διατείνεται για να μετατραπεί σε πολυλειτουργικό χαμηλό μπαρ, ενώ το όριο αριστερά της εισόδου
αφήνεται ως καθαρό φόντο. Στην μία πλευρά συγκροτείται το πιο δυναμικό και πολυσύχναστο σημείο του χώρου στο οποίο οι επισκέπτες γίνονται μέτοχοι της παρακευής ροφημάτων. Στην άλλη πλευρά που παραμένει κενή χωροθετείται μία εντυπωσιακή ροζ νεον επιγραφή του “φλερτ!”.
Ως προς την επιλογή της υλικότητας, το υαλοστάσιο της όψης, οι ιδιοκατασκευές των περιμετρικών ορίων και οι περσίδες εκφράζονται με ξύλο καρυδιάς. Οι περιμετρικοί πάγκοι παρασκευής προιόντων εκφράζονται με ξύλινες πλαισιωτές κατασκευές που βάφονται αντιστικτικά σε χρώμα μέντας. Η επιλογή ποικιλίας ξύλινων και μεταλικών καθισμάτων με σαφείς vintage αναφορές, καθιστά τον εσωτερικό χώρο φιλόξενο.
Τέλος, η υπάρχουσα υλικότητα του δαπέδου και της πλάκας οροφής αποκαλύπτεται και αναδεικνύεται η ειλικρινή έκφραση του παραδοσιακού μωσαικού και του ανεπίχριστου σκυροδέματος, συνθέτοντας έτσι την ατμόσφαιρα ενός σύγχρoνου μεσογειακού Bistro.
