Guillermo Trapiello and Ana Cubas took over a transformation of a small, compartmentalized flat in Madrid into a serene, open-plan retreat, blending aesthetics and functionality. The design prioritizes simplicity, comfort, and natural light, with key elements like a bespoke kitchen and custom furniture creating a personal yet practical space. The flat also reflects Trapiello’s creative journey, with subtle nods to his roots and a seamless flow between living areas that showcase his curated collection of objects and prototypes.

In the heart of Madrid, just steps away from the Manzanares River, Guillermo Trapiello and Ana Cubas have transformed a modest 60 m² flat in a 1930s building into a serene and hedonistic retreat. Their shared vision brought new life to what was once an enclosed and overly compartmentalised space, creating an open plan layout that harmoniously integrates functionality with aesthetic appeal.

The transformation of the flat is a testament to the balance achieved between creativity and restraint. Despite the freedom to experiment, Trapiello and Cubas opted for a design that prioritises simplicity and comfort. The result is a space that feels both personal and functional, where every element has a purpose. At the entrance of the house, we find the kitchen by Cubro, in a striking green shade that immediately draws attention. A long countertop and the bespoke “Pasarela” table, design by Guillermo himself and capable of seating up to ten people, define this area as a haven for culinary creativity and shared moments. The storage is thoughtfully placed below the counter to maintain a clean, uninterrupted visual flow, adding to the sense of openness.

The colour palette plays a crucial role, with white tones on walls and ceilings, and colours evoking the landscapes of Extremadura, where Trapiello’s design studio is based.

This subtle nod to nature enhances the flat’s connection to its owner’s roots and creative inspirations.

Natural light floods the space, amplifying its sense of openness and tranquillity.

Clever design choices, such as the central placement of the bathroom and laundry area, create a seamless flow between the kitchen and living spaces. The living room features a built-in bookshelf that doubles as a gallery for Trapiello’s curated collection of objects and furniture, blending function with storytelling.

Casa Albero is not just a home; it is a reflection of its owner’s journey and passions. It captures the essence of a retreat—a place where creativity and comfort coexist in perfect harmony.
