THE PEOPLE'S BENCH BY ANONYMOUS PART OF THE SINGAPLURAL EXHIBITION AT THE SINGAPORE DESIGN WEEK 2014

The People’s Bench (坐人) is a public furniture using salvaged wood from Singapore’s national parks. Inspired by Confucianism and its teachings on bettering oneself, the bench is based on the Chinese character “人” for people to sit back in a reclined position to rest and reflect on their thoughts.

The first brush stroke outlines the seating deck, while the second provides the form with structural support. Through its form, the bench creates an extended leg area, for 2 – 3 persons to rest comfortably in a low reclined position. The name is a play on the Chinese phrase “做人” symbolizing to conduct oneself with integrity. 30 LifeStories – irememberParks is a public campaign conceived by Singapore Furniture Industries Council and jointly presented with Singapore Sculpture Society and the National Parks Board. Thirty homegrown designers and artists were invited to specially design furniture from the fallen logs salvaged from parks and gardens from parks in Singapore.
