The Wave by Rena Sakellaridou SPARCH receives 2nd Honorable Mention for the New Passenger Terminal in Souda, Crete

Rena Sakellaridou SPARCH  won 2nd Honorable Mention for The Wave in the competition for the New Passenger Terminal in Souda, Crete. The building is inspired by the sea itself and its waves and the team placed emphasis on the environmental aspect of the Terminal.

We wanted our Passenger Terminal to be an elegant iconic building, one that can be easily transformed to phase B, a building that can accommodate the programme, simple in use and construction and environmentally friendly.

A building so close to the sea.
No wonder our first inspiration was the sea itself and its waves.

Images of the rhythmic repetition of the waves were transformed architecturally to the mild curves of the sloped metal roofs and the gently curved facades. Vertical blinds for protection of the sun, a game between closed and open, between revealing transparency and the silence of a white solid facade, a play between opening up to the view and turning inwards while ‘absorbing’ passengers on the ground floor.

“We place emphasis on the environmental aspect of the Terminal”, say the architects.

Phase A is, however, already complete: a strong image to be remembered, a terminal to be enjoyed and easily transformed in the inside, while keeping its elegance at the outside.

Vertical blinds on the West façade, and in the 2nd phase on the East, protect from the sun. Renewable sources of energy (geothermal system), natural ventilation and use of natural light as much as possible are some of the provisions taken for a low cost in energy building. The structural system is mixed: concrete for the foundation, floor slabs and columns and metal structure for the wavy roof.
