Annita Douka’s entry at the International one-stage architecture ideas competition Site Chapel by ARKxSITE, entitled “The Journey”, is inspired amongst other by James Turrell’s work, attempting to set up an in-situ situation which, ultimately, becomes an experience for the user.

The International one-stage architecture ideas competition Site Chapel invited the contestants to develop and submit compelling ideas for the design of a Site Chapel located on the Pessegueiro Island, in Porto Covo, Portugal.
“My desire is to set up a situation to which I take you and let you see. It becomes your experience.”, says artist James Turrell.
The Pessegueiro Island is located about 250 meters from the coastline, near the old fishing village of Porto Covo, in southwest Portugal. On the north side of the island, one can find the remarkable space of the old quarry where stone blocks were cut from the ground and thrown into the sea in order to connect the Pessegueiro Island to the small islet “Penedo do Cavalo”. The construction of the Fort “Santo Alberto” in a prominent location on the Pessegueiro Island and the Fort of “Nossa Senhora da Queimada” located on a cliffside on the coastline aimed to defend the coast from pirate attacks at the end of the sixteenth century.
The Site Chapel intends to be a place of solitude and contemplation, an intimate space for reflection and a platform for meditation which offers a unique experience within the remarkable landscape; it is a reflective journey and contemplative walk through memory, time and silence.
Meditation is the process of quieting the mind in order to attain an inner state of awareness and mindfulness and intensify personal and spiritual growth. In order to achieve this state of mind, one has to distance himself from his thoughts and measure them in scale and importance.
The Journey is a pilgrimage, an experience towards self awareness, a gateway to the contemplation of cosmos, time and landscape.
The pilgrim can stay one day on the island leading a transformative sensory experience, while he moves between three stops linked by a natural path and simultaneously three different perspectives of experiencing life.
The Quarry baths
The boat docks in the island’s harbour early in the morning. The pilgrim follows the path north towards the quarry. A white volume stands as a gate and a locker room to the quarry baths. In the negative space created by the desire to connect lands, water now invades to reconcile history and present.
The pilgrim leaves his clothes and enters the path of water that has inserted to the core of the quarry. The quarry baths offer a purification of body and mind surrounded by the texture and matter of the island, water, silence and shadow.
The Observatory
Leaving the baths, now while the sun is up, the pilgrim follows the path to the Observatory. The Observatory is a directed environment for experience and contemplation. The starlike machine frames the view of all the evidence of collective memory and historical continuity surrounding it; the fort of Sant Alberto, the roman archaeological remains and the fort Nossa Senhora da Queimada and the village of Porto Covo in the mainland. Once passing the gate, the pilgrim enters a sanctuary in the core of which he is able to observe and contemplate sitting across each window or in the heart of the Observatory.
The Star Shelter
As the day is winding down, the pilgrim follows the path past the roman remains and the fort to the Star Shelter. There he finds a staircase, pointing west to the sun that is plunging in the sea. The Star Shelter is a transparent sphere reflecting the natural elements, the sea and the sky. The pilgrim can lie in the center of the sphere which forms a comfort resting area, watch the sunset and indulge in an archetypic cosmos where the powers of nature meet. There he sleeps protected under the stars with the sound of the ocean.
A new day begin as the sun rises at the top of the staircase. As the pilgrim leads the way of return and the journey through memory, time and silence has ended, all new beginnings stand before him.

Η πρόταση της Αννίτας Δούκα στον Διεθνή Αρχιτεκτονικό Διαγωνισμό Ιδεών Site Chapel από το ARKxSITE ονομάζεται “The Journey” και είναι εμπνευσμένη από το πνεύμα του καλλιτέχνη James Turrell, αποσκοπώντας να δημιουργήσει μια επιτόπια κατάσταση που, τελικά, θα γίνεται μια εμπειρία για τον χρήστη.

Ο Διεθνής Αρχιτεκτονικός Διαγωνισμός Site Chapel καλούσε τους διαγωνιζόμενους να καταθέσουν τις ιδέες τους για το σχεδιασμό ενός Site Chapel στην περιοχή της νήσου Pessegueiro στο Porto Covo της Πορτογαλίας.
“Επιθυμία μου είναι να δημιουργήσω μια κατάσταση στην οποία σας πάω και σας αφήνω να δείτε. Αυτό γίνεται εμπειρία δική σας.”, λέει ο καλλιτέχνης James Turrell.
Το Site Chapel αποσκοπεί να είναι ένα μέρος απομόνωσης και περισυλλογής, ένας προσωπικός χώρος σκέψης και μια πλατφόρμα διαλογισμού που προσφέρει μια μοναδική εμπειρία μέσα σε ένα ιδιαίτερο τοπίο, είναι ένα ταξίδι στοχασμού και ένας περίπατος μέσα στη μνήμη, το χρόνο και τη σιωπή.
Ο διαλογισμός είναι μια διαδικασία που ηρεμεί το μυαλό ώστε να φτάσει σε μια εσωτερική κατάσταση αυτογνωσίας και ενσυνειδητότητας που μπορεί να ενισχύσει την προσωπική, πνευματική εξέλιξη. Για να φτάσει κανείς σε αυτή την κατάσταση, καλό είναι να πάρει μια απόσταση από τις σκέψεις του προκειμένου να μπορεί να καταλάβει τη σημασία και το μέγεθός τους.
Πρόκειται για ένα “προσκύνημα”, μια εμπειρική διαδρομή προς την αυτογνωσία, ένα παράθυρο στον κόσμo, το χρόνο και το τοπίο.
Ο προσκυνητής μπορεί να μείνει μια μέρα στο νησί βιώνοντας μια μοναδική εμπειρία ζωής όσο κινείται ανάμεσα σε τρεις στάσεις που συνδέονται από ένα φυσικό μονοπάτι και ταυτόχρονα ανάμεσα σε τρεις διαφορετικές οπτικές εμπειρίας.
Τα Λουτρά στο Λατομείο
Η βάρκα δένει στο φυσικό λιμάνι του νησιού με την αυγή. Ο προσκυνητής ακολουθεί το μονοπάτι βόρεια προς τα ορυχεία. Ένας λευκός όγκος συμβολίζει την πύλη προς τα λουτρά. Στον αρνητικό χώρο που δημιουργήθηκε από την ανάγκη να ενωθούν δύο στεριές, το νερό τώρα εισχωρεί για να συμφιλιώσει την ιστορία και το παρόν.
Ο προσκυνητής αφήνει τα ρούχα του και παίρνει το μονοπάτι του νερού που έχει εισχωρήσει ως τον πυρήνα του λατομείου. Τα Λουτρά προσφέρουν τον εξαγνισμό σε σώμα και μυαλό καθώς ο προσκυνητής περιβάλλεται από την ύλη και τις υφές του νησιού, το νερό, τη σιωπή και τη σκια.
Το Παρατηρητήριο
Αφήνοντας πίσω του τα Λουτρά, και καθώς τώρα ο ήλιος έχει φτάσει στα μισά της διαδρομής του, ο προσκυνητής ακολουθεί το μονοπάτι προς το Παρατηρητήριο. Το Παρατηρητήριο είναι ένα σκηνοθετημένο περιβάλλον εμπειρίας και παρατήρησης. Η μηχανή αυτή σε σχήμα αστεριού καδράρει τη θέα προς όλα τα δείγματα συλλογικής μνήμης και ιστορικού συνεχούς που το περιβάλλουν: το Κάστρο του Sant Alberto, τα ρωμαϊκά αρχαιολογικά ευρήματα και το Κάστρο Nossa Senhora da Queimada και το χωριό Porto Covo στην ενδοχώρα. Καθώς περνάει την είσοδο του Παρατηρητηρίου, ο προσκυνητής εισέρχεται σε ένα καταφύγιο από τον πυρήνα του οποίου μπορεί να παρατηρήσει.
Το Καταφύγιο
Καθώς η μέρα φτάνει στο τέλος, ο προσκυνητής ακολουθεί το μονοπάτι πέρα από τα αρχαία και το κάστρο. Εκεί βρίσκει τη σκάλα προς το Καταφύγιο στραμμένη προς τη δύση και προς τον ήλιο που βυθίζεται τώρα μέσα στον ωκεανό. Το Καταφύγιο είναι μια διαφανής σφαίρα που αντικατοπτρίζει τα φυσικά στοιχεία, τη θάλασσα και τον ουρανό. Ο προσκυνητής μπορεί να ξαπλώσει στο κέντρο της σφαίρας που σχηματίζει ένα άνετο χώρο ξεκούρασης, να δει το ηλιοβασίλεμα και να βυθιστεί σε έναν αρχετυπικό κόσμο όπου συναντώνται οι δυνάμεις της φύσης. Εκεί κοιμάται προστατευμένος κάτω από τα αστέρια με το νανούρισμα του κύματος του ωκεανού.
Μια νέα μέρα ξεκινάει καθώς ο ήλιος σηκώνεται στην ανατολή πίσω από τη σκάλα του Καταφύγιου. Καθώς ο προσκυνητής παίρνει το δρόμο του γυρισμού, το ταξίδι στη μνήμη, το χρόνο και τη σιωπή έχουν ολοκληρωθεί, όλα τα νέα ξεκινήματα βρίσκονται μπροστά του.
