Konstantinos Stamou and Anthippi Katsarou, both students at the School of Architecture of NTUA, won Editors’ Choice commendation at the international architectural competition “Central Park Book Studio” organised by Switch Competitions. The competition asked for the creation of a pavilion structure in the Central Park, New York that would house a public library/reading studio with an aim to promote reading culture among the general public and visitors.

“The more one gets educated, the more they expand their connection with the unknown.” In our case, the unknown is the sky, uranos. It is there, yet we know nothing about its nature. Countless theories consider the glance to the sky to be the way humans challenge the limits of their knowledge. This is exactly the goal here.
By sinking the readers below the earth level, the peripheral stimuli get eliminated, leaving just the sky to be observed, leading to a process of dematerialization of the surroundings, enhancing the spiritual role of the library.
A library with no physical books. The bottom of the crack, the level of the library that is, is divided in organic dips, each with a glass pier in the middle, dedicated in a certain subject area that can be changed according to the trending ones, so that readers interested in the same topic can discuss and exchange opinions, experiences etc. The main part here is the pier with the role of the book generator, a pier that also strengthens the distant skyline’s verticality, full of structures that shoot to the skies.
A modern library is no longer a quiet, static space, but a dynamic one that comes alive through the circulation of ideas.
And how about the books? Well, these are displayed in projections, so they’re basically immaterial. To read, you only need to lie down on the grass and choose your book on the projected screens.

Ο Κωνσταντίνος Στάμου και η Ανθίππη Κατσαρού, φοιτητές στην Αρχιτεκτονική Σχολή του ΕΜΠ, απέσπασαν τον έπαινο Editors’ Choice στον διεθνή αρχιτεκτονικό διαγωνισμό Central Park Book Studio απο την Switch Competitions. Ο διαγωνισμός ζητούσε τον σχεδιασμό ενός περιπτέρου στο Central Park της Νέας Υόρκης το οποίο θα στέγαζε μια δημόσια βιβλιοθήκη/αναγνωστήριο με απώτερο σκοπό να προωθηθεί η αναγνωστική κουλτούρα στο ευρύ κοινό και τους επισκέπτες του πάρκου.

“Όσο κανείς μορφώνεται, τόσο αυξάνει την επαφή του με το άγνωστο.” Στην περίπτωσή μας, το άγνωστο είναι ο ουρανός. Είναι εκεί, κι όμως δε γνωρίζουμε την πραγματική φύση του. Αμέτρητες θεωρίες ανά τα χρόνια θεωρούν το βλέμμα στον ουρανό ως τον τρόπο με τον οποίο οι άνθρωποι αμφισβητούν και διευρύνουν τα όρια της γνώσης τους. Και αυτό αποτελεί και το σκοπό της πρότασης.
Μέσω της βύθισης των αναγνωστών κάτω από το επίπεδο της γης, τα περιφερειακά ερεθίσματα εξαλείφονται, αφήνοντας αποκλειστικά τον ουρανό να παρατηρηθεί, οδηγώντας σε μια αποϋλικοποίηση του περίγυρου, τονίζοντας τον πνευματικό χαρακτήρα της βιβλιοθήκης.
Μιας βιβλιοθήκης χωρίς βιβλία σε φυσική μορφή. Ο πυθμένας της ρωγμής, ήτοι το επίπεδο της βιβλιοθήκης, διαιρείται σε λάκκους, ο καθένας διαθέτοντας έναν γυάλινο πυλώνα στο κέντρο του, αφιερωμένους σε συγκεκριμένες θεματικές οι οποίες μπορούν να μεταβάλλονται ανάλογα με τη ζήτηση, ώστε οι αναγνώστες που ενδιαφέρονται για κάποια από αυτές να έχουν τη δυνατότητα να συζητήσουν ανταλλάσσοντας απόψεις, εμπειρίες κλπ. Βασικό στοιχείο αποτελούν οι πυλώνες, με το ρόλο των παραγωγέων των βιβλίων, που παράλληλα, χάνονται στην απομακρυσμένη κορυφογραμμή της Νέας Υόρκης, το μοναδικό περιφερειακό ερέθισμα που έχει παραμείνει, γεμάτη από κατασκευές που δείχνουν προς τα πάνω.
Μια σύγχρονη βιβλιοθήκη δεν είναι πλέον ένας ήσυχος, στατικός χώρος, αλλά ένας δυναμικός ο οποίος ζωντανεύει μέσω της δοσοληψίας και κυκλοφορίας ιδεών.
Και που βρίσκονται τα βιβλία σε όλο αυτό; Θα εμφανίζονται στη μορφή προβολών, όντας άυλα. Για να διαβάσει κανείς, αρκεί να ξαπλώσει στο γρασίδι, όπως σε όλο το υπόλοιπο πάρκο, και να διαλέξει το βιβλίο του στις προβαλλόμενες οθόνες από τους πυλώνες.
