The 30 sq. meters apartment is situated close to the city’s universities, in a neighbourhood where mostly university students reside. Thus, the clients’ wish was to design a functional space for their daughter, a young university student. The renovated studio apartment consists of the living room, the kitchen, the bedroom, the entrance hall and the WC.

The basic design challenge was the uneven distribution of space, as the existing everyday area, consisting of the kitchen, the living room and the entrance, was one limited single space. To solve this problem, the existing wall separating the bedroom from the rest of the apartment was torn down and was redesigned incorporating an arched cove to allow the space of the living room to breathe. A new wall was also designed to create an entrance hall and separate the living room from the WC. By making these adjustments the aim was to distinguish the main functions from the secondary.

Furthermore, the different floor materials, herringbone wood floor, white marble and pink terrazzo tiles used in the studio accentuate the distinguished functions and compartmentalize each space.

As far as storage is concerned OFFICE4 tried to make use of every space available in this small apartment and created a combination of functions. The entrance hall offers the necessary wardrobe and cabinets. The kitchen island provides storage and a small dining area while it divides the kitchen from the living room. Inside the bedroom a wardrobe combines storage and an office space with a narrow bookcase, which is essential for every university student.

As the main idea revolved around a young woman’s aesthetic needs the new studio was designed as a bright space with fresh and feminine touches.

Through different materials, finishes and the combination of colours the aim was to create an aesthetically pleasing and vibrant space. The tropical ceramic tiles in the living room give a fresh and green approach to the design, whereas the arches, the curvy surfaces and decorative elements, such as the column and decorative plaster mouldings interlocked with the pastel colours, add a classic yet romantic feel, enhancing the desirable aesthetic outcome of the design.
