Architecture in Colour: Medio Uses a Vivid Colour Palette to Define Function and Atmosphere at Casa Magnolias in Madrid

Architecture in Colour series treats colour as an architectural instrument rather than decoration—one that shapes space, proportion, and emotional experience as powerfully as form and light.

At Casa Magnolias by Medio Estudio, a vivid palette choreographs spatial hierarchy, gently unfolding the transition between day and night. Defined by a terracotta volume and flexible partitions, color lends rhythm and clarity to the home, balancing efficiency with openness and infusing everyday living with a subtle, expressive intensity.

The intervention reorganizes the dwelling through a clear distinction between day and night zones, responding to a demanding functional brief in which the primary challenge lies in maximizing usable space while increasing storage capacity without compromising spatial clarity. A careful balance between efficiency and openness defines the approach, ensuring that each space performs optimally within a cohesive and fluid layout.

At the core of the project, the existing bathrooms—retained due to their good condition—act as a fixed anchor for the new spatial organization.

Encircling this nucleus, the entrance hall is reconceived as a highly integrated storage system, accommodating wardrobes, laundry functions, aerothermal equipment, and technical installations. This centralized strategy liberates the perimeter, allowing the primary living spaces to expand and fully engage with natural light.

The intervention is articulated through a terracotta-toned volume that reinforces the threshold between day and night areas while introducing color depth and spatial identity.

Within the day zone, the kitchen and living area are articulated as interconnected yet distinct environments, achieving visual continuity without sacrificing autonomy.

The reinterpreted dividing wall emerges as a defining architectural element, organizing circulation and structuring spatial relationships while allowing variable degrees of openness in response to everyday use.

The elimination of superfluous partitions, combined with enhanced visual permeability, strengthens the flow of natural light and amplifies the perception of spatial generosity.

The night zone accommodates three bedrooms, each designed with generous built-in storage and conceived as calm, functional retreats.

Here, subtle chromatic interventions introduce identity and warmth, carefully calibrated to preserve the overall sense of serenity.

Through a precise and measured architectural intervention, the dwelling is transformed into an efficient, adaptable, and expressive living environment, where optimization, storage, and color operate in unison to articulate both function and atmosphere.
