PRESENTATION OF CARLOTTA DE BEVILACQUA AND MARIANTHI TATARI, KEYNOTE SPEAKERS AT ΕΣΩ CONFERENCE

After last`s year massive success in the 3rd ESO Conference, the most important annual meeting pertaining to architecture and design, which took place in Onassis Cultural Center, this year the expectations are even greater. In 2015, ESO Conference is framed by multiple events that connect it with the city, expanding the platform of debate, through active participation.

Keynote speakers of 2015

CARLOTTA DE BEVILACQUA

As a designer, entrepreneur and fully established university lecturer, Carlotta de Bevilacqua is one of the major players in the world of contemporary architectural and design.
Graduated in 1983 in Architecture at the Politecnico di Milano, she is in charge of her architectural and design office, aimed at designing innovative spaces and buildings with reduced environmental impact and trying new interpretations of the relationship among man, architecture, nature and light.

Designer of wide experience and Art Director of Memphis and Alias from 1989 to 1993, she expounded important research on lighting design. She developed for Artemide and Danese many new generation LED products, recognized with several patents (Algoritmo dark, Pad, Cata for Artemide and Una Pro for Danese), introducing in lighting contest new technological scenario in terms of performance, environmental impact and sensitive experience.
She investigates aspects of light related to physiological and psychological well-being by offering new qualitative standards in life for living beings and for the planet.

Carlotta de Bevilacqua is Vice President and General Manager of Artemide for Brand Strategy and Product Innovation with reponsibilities in Marketing, Communication and Vision & Strategic Futures.
In 2000 Carlotta de Bevilacqua acquired Danese, the leader company in Italian design during 60’/70’s. In a very short time, she revived it, gaining new market shares and a new leadership.
Since 2001 she is a fully established university lecturer for the lighting design project lab, for Design Faculty of Politecnico in Milan. Ever for Politecnico in Milan Carlotta de Bevilacqua teaches also in Light Product Design Master. From 1999 to 2001, she was a workshop lecturer and Project leader of innovative products within the Strategic Design Master (Mip) Program. From 2001 to 2004, she was a lecturer in the Design Master Program at Domus Academy in Milan. Carlotta de Bevilacqua frequently lectures at Bocconi University and Politecnico di Milano.

For the year 2013 she has been member of the Board of Direction of Fondazione La Triennale di Milano.
Carlotta de Bevilacqua’s presence is very much appreciated at conventions and seminars with the aim to explore the changes in the contemporary society, the new boundaries of the international markets and the evolving needs of the environment in terms of energetic sustainability.

LIGHT, MAN AND SPACE IN CONTEMPORARY PROJECT

The project is research and culture and starts from the convergence of a constant technological progress and an anthropological approach.
Now technological innovation must be related to a new humanism that put it in relations to man, his life, his needs and spaces and that at the same time take care of the planet`s future.
Light is like air and water, humans and nature can not live without. It is an essential contribution to life and its quality.
Light is also energy and matter and design it means to reflect on the sustainability of the planet`s resources. Designing light becomes, first of all, an ethical gesture.

Light is also constructive material of space and interface to follow the rhythms of man. Designing it means to emphasize the architectural volumes, creating a relationship between them and man determining the identity of the spaces through their perception.
Following the recent optoelectronics revolution, the design of the light has to deal with new processes: the creativity of the contemporary designer must measure against specialized skills that, thanks to the teamwork, transform ideas into a final products.
Designing light no longer means just draw a shape, but knowing how to handle the more technical and specialized competences, enhance and optimize the luminous performances to create increasingly cross products, continually updatable open platforms, with timeless shapes made to last.

MARIANTHI TATARI

Marianthi Tatari is a Senior Architect / Associate at UNStudio. She graduated from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki where she studied architectural engineering, and received her Master of Architecture from the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles. She joined UNStudio in 2007. She is currently responsible for the Architectural Branding design for the project of the Metro Network in Doha, Qatar.
Marianthi organizes the project team and defines design input and strategies, whilst managing contact with external relations in balance with internal project coordination. She has extensive experience with projects of varying scales and typologies. In addition to large mixed-use developments in Asia, she has also played a key role in the design of the Collector’s Loft in New York and Galleria Centercity in South Korea. Her area of focus is design, organization and bridging strong ideas with new methods of design implementation.

BIG DETAIL

Today, there are many complex restrictions on architecture, which go hand in hand with technology, economy, ecology and politics. In UNStudio, by redefining a compositorial set of ingredients, we discipline these complex questions in a more radical manner. We make use of conceptual, spatial, constructional or material features that continuously evolve within our projects. The idea of Big Detail conceptualises and integrates these principle features of what we would like to communicate with our architecture; an idea that ‘details in design can shift concepts
