Mediterranean archetypes combined with latin american elements define Imperfecto’s restaurant both menu and aesthetic. OOAK Architects with Yiorgos Kordakis as an art director, realised this project in Washington DC.
Black and white background combined in unexpected ways with multiple materials and textures, blue and teraccota touches, compose a unique atmosphere and spatial experience inspired by Mediterranean sun, Aegean sea, and greek quarries.

Fusing Mediterranean flavors and contemporary Latin American techniques, Imperfecto, the brainchild of chef Enrique Limardo and partner Ezequiel Vázquez-Ger, instantly won over the culinary crowds since it opened its doors in April 2021. Constantly seeking perfection as defined by Aristotle but never willing to achieve it is the core of the restaurant’s philosophy, meticulously practiced here every day in an elegant, expertly designed space situated in Washington DC.
Conceived in the creative mind of photographer Yiorgos Kordakis who served as the art director and designed by Greek-Swedish architecture studio OOAK, Imperfecto is openly influenced by Mediterranean archetypes.
Relying on the distinctive color palette of white and black, punctuated with hues of blue and featuring warm wooden and artisan terra-cotta accents, the 98-seat restaurant is divided into three parts: The Bar, The Chef’s Table and The Main Dining Room, each offering its own defined energy.
A backdrop, inspired by the block volume aesthetic of a marble quarry, interconnects each space. This is actually a wall, articulated with multiple textures in various shades of white -both lean and rough, shiny and matte, reflecting the light in different ways– turning it into a piece of art, rich in significance and connotations.
Elegant leather banquette silos line the back wall, with overhead domes and round tables creating a pod-like sensation. Above the main dining room, drop formed glass bulbs designed by Swedish Glass artist Simon Klenell offer warm lighting, simulating the comfort of the sun over the Aegean.
Bespoke furniture, custom designed by OOAK Architects, paired with pieces by some of the world’s biggest designer brands, create the backbone of the restaurant’s DNA. A custom-made host desk of burl wood combined with handmade ceramic tile artwork by London/Athens based ceramic artist Melina Xenaki adorns the space, and the intricately designed bar area features overhead arches with bespoke light fixtures by Orbium light studio and a mural photograph of a Greek Quarry by the initiator of the project, Yiorgos Kordakis.
OOAK architects has used varied high-quality finishes and authentic materials including Greek and Italian marbles as well as brass and wood from different parts of the world, creating contrasting textures across the space. This amalgamation of natural materials and bold shapes bring forth a holistic celebration of the undisputed identity of the place: A modern yet extraordinarily classic culinary experience whose im-perfection derives from the divine synthesis of seemingly completely incompatible elements, worlds and aesthetic identities.

ABOUT THE CREATIVE DIRECTOR
Yiorgos Kordakis is a photographer whose career easily breezes between commercial assignments that require a strong artistic mind frame and his personal Art Projects that draw from a restlessness that continuously cultivates his craft. He sees himself not as a photographer but rather as a creative in need of sharing his unique vision. His approach to Architecture follows a meticulous observational method identical to that of an Art Curator. For him, any structure becomes a unique piece of art, placed into the landscape.
ABOUT THE ARCHITECTS
OOAK (One Of A Kind) Architects, a firm helmed by Maria Papafigou and Johan Annerhed, was one of the five teams selected to participate in an invited competition for this design. They won the contest with a simple yet sophisticated approach to what the Mediterranean truly encompasses. Small in size, the firm works with projects of different scales in a broad variety of environments around the globe. Characteristics such as program, physical and cultural context, climate and people, are specific attributes that often become the driving forces for their design process.

Ένας ασπρόμαυρος καμβάς, συνδυάστηκε με αναπάντεχους τρόπους με διαφορετικές υφές και υλικότητες και στοιχεία σε αποχρώσεις του μπλε και της τερακότας δημιουργώντας μια μοναδική ατμόσφαιρα και ένα χώρο εμπνευσμένο από το Μεσογειακό ήλιο, τη θάλασσα του Αιγαίου και τα ελληνικά λατομεία.

Αναμειγνύοντας Μεσογειακές γεύσεις και σύγχρονες τεχνικές της Λατινικής Αμερικής, Το Imperfecto, δημιούργημα του σεφ Enrique Limardo και του συνέταιρου του Ezequiel Vázquez-Ger, κέρδισε πρόσφατα την εκτίμηση του γκουρμέ κοινού, αφότου άνοιξε τις πόρτες του, τον Απρίλιο του 2021.
Η μόνιμη αναζήτηση της τελειότητας, κατά τον Αριστοτέλη, αλλά μη φτάνοντάς την ποτέ, αποτελεί τον πυρήνα της φιλοσοφίας του εστιατορίου.
Την ιδέα συνέλαβε ο δημιουργικός νους του φωτογράφου Γιώργου Κορδάκη που λειτούργησε ως καλλιτεχνικός διευθυντής και το εστιατόριο σχεδιάστηκε από το Ελληνο-σουηδικό αρχιτεκτονικό γραφείο OOAK. Το Imperfecto είναι φανερά επηρεασμένο από μεσογειακά πρότυπα. Ταλαντεύεται στην χρωματική παλέτα του άσπρου και του μαύρου, με αποχρώσεις του μπλε και χαρακτηριστικές θερμές μαστορικές τερακότα πινελιές.
Το εστιατόριο των 98 θέσεων χωρίζεται σε τρία μέρη: Το μπαρ, Το chef’s table και την μεγάλη σάλα. Το καθένα προσφέρει τη δική του καθορισμένη ενέργεια. Ένας σκηνογραφικός τοίχος φόντου εμπνευσμένος από τα μεσογειακά μαρμάρινα λατομεία, συνδέει τους χώρους. Στην ουσία πρόκειται για ένα τοίχο που με πολλαπλές επιφάνειες σε διάφορες αποχρώσεις και υφές του άσπρου. Απαλό και τραχύ, γυαλιστερό και ματ αντικατοπτρίζει το φως με διαφορετικούς τρόπους, καθιστώντας τον πλούσιο σε σημασία και συμβολισμούς.
Κομψά δερμάτινα σιλό, με θόλους και στρογγυλά τραπέζια για πιο οικείες συναντήσεις στον πίσω τοίχο. Πάνω από την κυρίως αίθουσα του εστιατορίου, γυάλινοι λαμπτήρες σε σχήμα σταγόνων σχεδιασμένοι από τον καλλιτέχνη υαλουργό Simon Klenell, προσφέρουν θερμό φωτισμό που μιμείται την θαλπωρή του ήλιου πάνω από το Αιγαίο.
Πολλά έπιπλα έγιναν κατά παραγγελία και σχεδιάστηκαν από τους OOAK Architects, συνδυάστηκαν με κομμάτια που προέρχονται από μερικούς από τους διασημότερους οίκους στο design, δημιουργώντας έτσι τη ραχοκοκαλιά του DNA του εστιατορίου. Ένα έπιπλο υποδοχής για τους πελάτες από ξύλο ελιάς σε συνδυασμό με χειροποίητα κεραμικά πλακάκια και δοχεία της καλλιτέχνιδος Μελίνας Ξενάκη στολίζουν τον χώρο. Ο πλούσια σχεδιασμένος χώρος του μπαρ με φωτιστικά σχεδιασμένα custom από το στούντιο Orbium και μία φωτογραφία μεγάλης διάστασης ενός ελληνικού λατομείου του εμπνευστή του πρότζεκτ, Γιώργου Κορδάκη.
Η OOAK architects χρησιμοποίησαν διάφορα αυθεντικά υλικά υψηλής ποιότητας που περιλαμβάνουν ελληνικά και ιταλικά μάρμαρα καθώς και πυλό και ξύλο από διαφορετικά σημεία του κόσμου, δημιουργώντας αντιθέσεις στην υφή κατά μήκος του χώρου.
Το αμάλγαμα όλων των φυσικών υλικών και των τολμηρών μορφών οδηγούν σε μια ολιστική γιορτή της αναμφισβήτητης ταυτότητας του χώρου. Μια μοντέρνα εκπληκτική κλασική γκουρμέ εμπειρία που η μη τελειότητα πηγάζει από την ιδιαίτερη σύνθεση φαινομενικά εντελώς ασύμβατων στοιχείων, κόσμων και αισθητικών ταυτοτήτων.
