Bennetts Associates office has been appointed to reimagine the campus of Anatolia College in Thessaloniki, one of Greece’s most distinguished academic institutions. . The practice was selected through a rigorous process from a final shortlist with UNStudio and NADAA and an original longlist including Foster + Partners, BIG and Gensler. Established in 1886, Anatolia College is celebrated as one of Greece’s most distinguished educational establishments. The private, non-profit organisation that caters to all levels of education has identified a need for a future vision that will enhance the student experience, better reflect its preeminent academic reputation (both national and international) and allow significant expansion of the student population at its tertiary division, ACT – The American College of Thessaloniki.
Set in a beautiful and historic location in the hills above Thessaloniki, the campus covers c.22 hectares in total. In addition to reimagining the campus identity and refining the quality of place/architecture, other key objectives include future-proofing educational space for students and staff, cherishing the local heritage, further embedding sustainability, celebrating nature and improving key functional aspects of the estate. Bennetts Associates will be supported by acclaimed landscape architects Grant Associates, as well as Buro Happold (sustainability/highways), Alexi Marmot Associates (educational briefing) and Betaplan (Greek partner architects). As part of the tender process, design concepts by Bennetts Associates and its collaborators build on a theme of a “forest campus” by unifying the site through a sensory and experiential journey.
They also include major new entrances, reworked “heartspace” quads, doubling of nature, a new rooftop events space with panoramic sea and mountain views, and a 600-seat state of-the-art auditorium. Completion and approval of the framework masterplan is targeted for summer 2024.

Ανατέθηκε στο αρχιτεκτονικό αυτό γραφείο ο επανασχεδιασμός της πανεπιστημιούπολης του Αμερικανικού Κολλεγίου Ανατόλια στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Η εταιρεία επιλέχθηκε μέσω μιας αυστηρής διαδικασίας από μια τελική λίστα που περιελάμβανε τα γραφεία UNStudio και NADAA, και μια αρχική λίστα με τα αναγνωρισμένα ξένα γραφεία Foster + Partners, Bjarke Ingels Group και Gensler. Το Κολλέγιο Ανατόλια ιδρύθηκε το 1886 και φημίζεται ως ένα από τα πιο διακεκριμένα εκπαιδευτικά ιδρύματα στην Ελλάδα. Ο ιδιωτικός, μη-κερδοσκοπικός οργανισμός που απευθύνεται σε όλα τα επίπεδα εκπαίδευσης, εντόπισε την ανάγκη για ένα μελλοντικό όραμα που θα ενισχύσει την εμπειρία των φοιτητών, θα αντικατοπτρίζει καλύτερα την εξέχουσα ακαδημαϊκή του φήμη -τόσο σε εθνικό όσο και σε διεθνές επίπεδο- και θα επιτρέψει σημαντική διεύρυνση του φοιτητικού πληθυσμού στο τριτοβάθμιο τμήμα του “ACT – The American College of Thessaloniki”.
Η πανεπιστημιούπολη καλύπτει συνολικά περίπου 220 στρέμματα σε μια όμορφη και ιστορική τοποθεσία στους λόφους πάνω από τη Θεσσαλονίκη. Εκτός από τον επαναπροσδιορισμό της ταυτότητας της πανεπιστημιούπολης και τη βελτίωση της ποιότητας του τόπου/αρχιτεκτονικής για τους φοιτητές και το προσωπικό, άλλοι βασικοί στόχοι περιλαμβάνουν την εξασφάλιση εκπαιδευτικού χώρου για το μέλλον του Ανατόλια, την προστασία της τοπικής κληρονομιάς, την περαιτέρω ενσωμάτωση βιώσιμων πρακτικών, την προστασία του φυσικού περιβάλλοντος χώρου και τη βελτίωση βασικών λειτουργικών πτυχών της έκτασης.
Η Bennetts Associates θα υποστηριχθεί από τους καταξιωμένους αρχιτέκτονες τοπίου Grant Associates, καθώς και από τη Buro Happold (βιωσιμότητα/συγκοινωνιακή μελέτη), Alexi Marmot Associates (εκπαιδευτική ενημέρωση) και Betaplan (συνεργαζόμενοι αρχιτέκτονες στην Ελλάδα). Ως βασική αρχή του διαγωνισμού, οι σχεδιαστικές ιδέες της Bennetts Associates και των συνεργατών της βασίζονται σε ένα θέμα «δασικής πανεπιστημιούπολης» (forest campus) ενοποιώντας την τοποθεσία μέσα από ένα αισθητηριακό και βιωματικό ταξίδι. Στην πρόταση περιλαμβάνονται επίσης σημαντικές νέες είσοδοι, επανασχεδιασμένα προαύλια, διπλασιασμός του πρασίνου, νέος χώρος εκδηλώσεων στον τελευταίο όροφο με πανοραμική θέα στη θάλασσα και το βουνό, και ένα υπερσύγχρονο αμφιθέατρο 600 θέσεων. Η ολοκλήρωση και έγκριση του masterplan έχει στόχο το καλοκαίρι του 2024.
Ο Albert H. “Chip” Elfner III, Πρόεδρος του Διοικητικού Συµβουλίου του Κολλεγίου Ανατόλια, δήλωσε: «Αυτή είναι μια συναρπαστική στιγμή για το Κολλέγιο Ανατόλια, καθώς γιορτάζουμε τα εκατό χρόνια από τη μετακόμισή μας στον σημερινό τόπο. Εκτός από το ότι σηματοδοτεί το ταξίδι στο σημείο που βρισκόμαστε, είναι η ιδανική στιγμή για να οραματιστούμε ένα συναρπαστικό μέλλον, με αυτό το νέο masterplan στην καρδιά της διαδικασίας. Ανυπομονούμε με ενθουσιασμό να δούμε πού μπορεί αυτό να μας οδηγήσει».

Εκτός από τη βαθιά τεχνογνωσία τους, εκδήλωσαν μεγάλη φαντασία και αφοσίωση κατά τη διαδικασία επιλογής, μαζί με την επιθυμία να μας βοηθήσουν να εκφράσουμε ποιοί είμαστε και πού βρισκόμαστε. Μας άρεσε πολύ αυτός ο συνδυασμός και ανυπομονούμε να συνεργαστούμε περαιτέρω μαζί τους.”

Ελπίζουμε ότι το τελικό αποτέλεσμα θα είναι μια εξαιρετική πανεπιστημιούπολη που θα επιτυγχάνει τους στόχους της και θα εμπνέει τη συμμετοχή από πολλές γενιές «Anatolians».
