Michael Cacoyannis Foundation, in collaboration with Compassion Collective present the architecture exhibition “Space and the Architecture of Compassion”, curated by Prof. Solon Xenopoulos and based on an idea by Dr Efi Kyprianidou and Penny Monogiou. This is the first part of a series of art and research projects that examine the role of arts in the understanding of Illness, Empathy and Compassion curated by Compassion Collective in Athens.
In the exhibition with the title “Space and the Architecture of Compassion” questions like the following, are addressed through drawings, sketches, models, videos, sounds and installations.
– To what extend illness, pain and suffering are natural situations, against being culturally conditioned? How do different cultures embody socially and spatially these conditions?
– Can illness, pain and suffering be in certain cases liberating and creative?
– How can the formal structure of built space reflect human condition?
– How did the idea of “ygeia” develop in space historically?
– How ancient Greek philosophy affected the spaces for healing?
– How do different traditions conceive and comprehend illness, pain, suffering and healing?
– How are, esoteric bodily and psychic energy forces, exteriorized in art? ( theatre, performance, painting, dance, cinema ).
– How does time affect the ways by which persons under extreme conditions conceive space?
Practically the exhibition develops as two complimentary actions.
The first concentrates on the actual form of the exhibition itself, its architecture, organization and setting, in the specific space. Its design is directed towards formulating a spatial installation which is expected, through their movement, to induce visitors into some kind of a total spatial experience relating to the issues about an architecture of compassion.
The second action is constituted by a large number of diverse design projects produced by undergraduate and post graduate students of Architecture

About Compassion Collective:
Compasion Collective was founded in 2015 by a voluntary initiative of active citizens, artists and academics based in Hamburg and Athens. On the contrary,the project aims to offering an engagement with the phenomenology of being ill and in pain, based on the assumption that art can offer us a special kind of knowledge about what it is like to be in a given situation and help improving the patient’s position in society and particularly in times of extended economic crisis.
Το Ίδρυµα Μιχάλης Κακογιάννης σε συνεργασία µε την κολεκτίβα Compassion, παρουσιάζουν την έκθεση αρχιτεκτονικής µε τίτλο Space and the Architecture of Compassion / Ο Χώρος και η Αρχιτεκτονική της Συµπόνιας σε επιµέλεια του Καθ. Σόλωνα Ξενόπουλου. Τη σύλληψη και γενικότερη επιµέλεια των δράσεων του Compassion έχουν οι δρ. Έφη Κυπριανίδου και Πένυ Μονογιού.
Στην έκθεση µε τον τίτλο « Ο Χώρος και η Αρχιτεκτονική της Συµπόνιας» διερευνώνται µε τη χρήση σχεδίων, σκαριφηµάτων, µακετών, video, ήχων και εγκαταστάσεων, ερωτήµατα όπως:
– Σε ποιό βαθµό η ασθένεια, ο πόνος και η ταλαιπωρία είναι φυσικές καταστάσεις και σε ποιό βαθµό ρυθµίζονται πολιτιστικά;
– Υπάρχουν περιπτώσεις που ο πόνος, η δυστυχία και η ασθένεια µπορούν να αποτελέσουν απελευθερωτικές και δηµιουργικές δυνάµεις;
– Πώς η µορφή του δοµηµένου χώρου αντανακλά την ανθρώπινη κατάσταση;
– Πώς η ιδέα της «υγείας» αναπτύχθηκε στο χώρο ιστορικά; – Πώς η αρχαία ελληνική φιλοσοφία επηρέασε τους χώρους για θεραπεία;
– Πώς διαφορετικές παραδόσεις και πολιτισµοί αντιλαµβάνονται την ασθένεια, τον πόνο, τη δυστυχία και τη θεραπεία και πως τις χωροποιούν ;
– Πώς οι εσωτερικές σωµατικές και ψυχικές ενεργειακές δυνάµεις εξωτερικεύονται στην Τέχνη (θέατρο παραστατικές τέχνες, ζωγραφική, χορός);
– Πώς η διάσταση του χρόνου επηρεάζει τους τρόπους µε τους οποίους, κάτω από ειδικές συνθήκες, άτοµα ή οµάδες αντιλαµβάνονται το χώρο;
Η έκθεση πρακτικά υλοποιείται µε δύο δράσεις.
Η πρώτη αφορά τον σχεδιασµό, και τις συνθετικές αρχές οργάνωσής της στο συγκεκριµένο χώρο. Ο σχεδιασµός επικεντρώνεται στη διατύπωση µιας χωρικής εγκατάστασης, η οποία εισάγει και παρακινεί τους επισκέπτες σε µια συνολική χωρική εµπειρία που αντικατοπτρίζει τα ερωτήµατα που έχουν τεθεί.
Η δεύτερη δράση υλοποιείται συνθετικά, µέσα από τις µελέτες και τις εργασίες που εκτίθενται. Πρόκειται για κατασκευές που βασίζονται στις υποθέσεις και τα ερωτήµατα που έχουν τεθεί από την θεµατολογία της έκθεσης.

Σχετικά με την κολεκτίβα Compassion:
Η Compassion είναι μια μη κερδοσκοπική εικαστική κολεκτίβα εθελοντών, που δραστηριοποιείται στην Αθήνα, στο Αμβούργο και στη Λευκωσία. Οι εικαστικοί και οι θεωρητικοί επιστήμονες που συμμετέχουν επιχειρούν να κατανοήσουν το χώρο της ασθένειας και του συσχετιζόμενου πόνου, σε μια προσπάθεια ενδυνάμωσης της ενσυναίσθησης για τους πάσχοντες και ευαισθητοποίησης του κοινού μέσω καλλιτεχνικών και θεωρητικών οδών. Στόχος είναι να καταδειχθεί η σημασία της βελτίωσης της θέσης του ασθενούς στην κοινωνία και, ειδικότερα εντός του συστήματος περίθαλψης, ιδιαίτερα σε περίοδο παρατεταμένης οικονομικής κρίσης.
