HOTEL DESIGN: SP34 – BLURRING THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN HOTEL & NEIGHBORHOOD

Hotel SP34 is a 118 room 4+ boutique hotel situated in Copenhagen, Denmark designed by architect Morten Hedegaard. The hotel is situated in the famous Latin Quarter, a bohemian neighborhood in the center of the city. The architectural basis for Hotel SP34 was three individual Copenhagen townhouses comprised with one on Jarmers Plads and two around the corner on Sankt Peder Stræde.

 

What makes SP34 special is that it is one of the first hotels in the world that, through the use of fine design & respect to the design heritage of Denmark, offers an exciting hotel experience to both foreign and domestic guests. It blends in so naturally with the surroundings and balances between modernity & local characteristics in an exquisite way.

 

The main focus of the design was to make a positive contribution to the area in architectural and functional terms blurring the distinction between the hotel and the street. In order for Hotel SP34 to be unobtrusive to the surrounding & colorful neighborhood, the facades on the three buildings were painted in differing shades of blue – two light and one dark – to blend in with the rest of the street.

 

The interior design of the hotel is an expression of storytelling behind each element that arouses the guests’ curiosity. For instance, the design team discovered a 1950s chair of unknown origin in a cellar beneath the original building. The chair is today a signature element of Hotel SP34. As part of the search for original items for the project, the team discovered a large warehouse filled with antique glass lampshades from the `50s and the result is a hotel illuminated throughout with original lamps adorned with antique, unusual and very beautiful glass shades.
