Redeveloping Charitou square at the northmost part of the city of Rhodes is mainly a matter of ending its present status of both functional and perceptual remoteness and reintroducing it as a distinct and well-defined urban space.

In order for this to occur, our design team introduces a twisting flow that runs along the entire length of the square from south to north to create a succession of spaces which are accessible from multiple directions, permeable, flexible.

A pedestrian/cycling bridge emerges from the ground to connect the square with the seafront and the aquarium area. This, besides offering stunning views of the square from above, could also be thought of as a trigger for a future further intervention in the city’s seafront.

Στόχος της επέμβασης ανάπλασης στην πλατεία Χαρίτου της Ρόδου – με το χαρακτηριστικό επίμηκες σχήμα και τις 100 υψίκορμες χουρμαδιές – είναι να ξαναμπεί η περιοχή στο δίκτυο των ελεύθερων αστικών χώρων της πόλης της Ρόδου ανατρέποντας την τρέχουσα λειτουργική και αντιληπτική της απομόνωση και επανατοποθετώντας την ως χώρο με διακριτή ταυτότητα και αναγνωρισιμότητα.

Στην πρότασή μας, μια έκδηλη ροϊκή κίνηση που εξελίσσεται παράλληλα με τις χουρμαδιές της πλατείας από νότο προς βορρά, υφαίνει τον καμβά για τη δημιουργία ενός χώρου προσβάσιμου από πολλαπλές κατευθύνσεις, διαπερατού, κινητικου. Η δυναμική αυτή ροή οργανώνει τη διαδοχή των χώρων κυκλοφορίας – στάσης σε ένα σύστημα διευρύνσεων του περιμετρικού της πλατείας χώρου προς το κέντρο και αντίστροφα.

Στο μέσο της πλατείας, τμήμα της κεντρικής ροής αποκολλάται από το έδαφος και ως πεζογέφυρα – ποδηλατόδρομος ενοποιεί την πλατεία με την περιοχή του ενυδρείου και την παραλιακή οδό, προσφέροντας τη δυνατότητα δυναμικής πρόσληψης του χώρου από ένα άλλο επίπεδο. Δυνητικά η χειρονομία αυτή θα μπορούσε να αποτελέσει και το έναυσμα για μια μελλοντική συνολική παρέμβαση στο υπόλοιπο παραλιακό μέτωπο της πόλης της Ρόδου.
