Αrchitect Agnese Casadio redesigns an apartment in Kypseli, Athens, by adapting and developing a renovation strategy based on preserving the existing spatial character while adjusting the space to accommodate the changing needs and aspirations.

This 90 sqm apartment, located in Kypseli, Athens, was designed by architect Agnese Casadio.

Originally built in the late 1950s, the renovation sought to preserve the charm and character of the original Athenian home while reimagining its layout for contemporary family life.

Many of the original elements were carefully restored and celebrated: terrazzo and wooden floors, ceiling cornices, and vintage doors remain as tangible traces of the apartment’s history, grounding the project in its authentic context.

Flexibility is at the core of the design. The previously compartmentalized plan has been transformed into a fluid and adaptable space that can respond to the family’s changing needs.

A large sliding door between the living room and dining area allows the home to shift from a generous, continuous open-plan space—perfect for social life and gatherings—to a more private configuration. When closed, the living room becomes an independent room that can serve as a guest bedroom, allowing the apartment to accommodate three bedrooms and two bathrooms within its 90 sqm.

A second “hidden” door, seamlessly integrated into the kitchen’s block of cabinetry, connects the master bedroom directly to the kitchen. This discreet passage ensures functional circulation and privacy when the living room is used as a bedroom, enhancing the apartment’s overall flexibility without compromising its clarity or design integrity.

At the heart of the layout lies the kitchen—both the functional and social hub of the home.

Its diagonal geometry responds to the apartment’s southern orientation, allowing natural light to reach even the deepest parts of the plan. This enhances the feeling of openness and warmth, reinforcing the fluid visual and spatial connections that define the project.

CASA CZ was also conceived as a welcoming home for friends and family, reflecting the couple’s desire to maintain strong personal and cultural ties while living abroad.

Ultimately, the project is a quiet dialogue between past and present—celebrating original craftsmanship while embracing a contemporary, flexible approach to urban living in today’s Athens.
