THEORY // Seasonal House: a domestic climate-driven experiment | by TAKK

“Seasonal House, a domestic climate-driven experiment” by TAKK, originated with the intention of transforming a 400 m² industrial space into a home, while acknowledging from the outset the impossibility of adapting the entire interior climate to comfort standards without incurring high economic and ecological costs.

From this impossibility arises the idea of creating small domestic devices that address, on one hand, the main functional needs of the house (bedroom, bathroom, furniture, etc.), and on the other hand, the controlled climate adaptation of the warehouse to both the high temperatures of the Mediterranean summer and the winter cold of a space with no thermal insulation in walls, floors, and ceilings, as it was originally an industrial-type structure.

The remaining space between these devices is left unconditioned with minimal intervention (mainly painting), stimulating flexibility and the multiple possibilities for appropriation that such large spaces allow.

In this regard, “Seasonal House” proposes, instead of linking the number of rooms in the house to the number of inhabitants, to link the number and typology of the spaces to the climate diversity throughout the year.

This approach seeks to achieve greater energy efficiency and lower resource consumption, taking advantage of the large size of the space.

SEASONAL HOUSE – TEMPERATURES

“Seasonal House” explores circular economy topics as a basic architectural strategy to face the challenges of climate change, proposing the construction of these domestic devices exclusively from recycled materials, directly connecting the creation of new pieces to the availability of these materials.

From concrete blocks, wooden slats, natural wool insulation, recycled cotton, scaffolding, or gypsum board, any material with minimal structural capacities, and beyond its aesthetic coherence, is used to address a specific need or function while exploring new domestic codes adapted to the new global climate regime from an inclusive and enjoyable perspective of contemporary housing possibilities.
