A penthouse in the Gazi neighborhood of Athens has been transformed into a living space where color, materiality, and a curated mix of vintage and contemporary furniture redefine its interior atmosphere. The renovation, led by Nefelia Studio, emphasizes a connection between the apartment’s interior and the cityscape that surrounds it.
In the dynamic Athenian neighborhood of Gazi, a duplex penthouse with panoramic views has been thoughtfully renovated by architect Nefeli Papanagiotou and her team Nefelia Studio.
Originally designed and constructed by the same team in 2005, the apartment is located at the top of a contemporary building that continues to stand out in the urban fabric of the area.
The renovation focuses on enhancing the apartment’s strengths—its open layout and 360-degree exposure to the city.
Natural light fills the main living space, creating a strong connection with the outdoors through wide verandas and large windows.
Views of Athens landmarks such as the Parthenon and the old gasworks become an integral part of the interior experience.
The design palette combines natural materials and subtle contrasts.
Hand-painted cement tiles, reminiscent of traditional Greek courtyards, are paired with oak wood flooring, adding texture and warmth. White walls provide a clean backdrop for an eclectic selection of artwork, while a matte black box discreetly encloses the WC, offering a minimalist architectural gesture.
A mix of vintage and contemporary furniture pieces contributes to a layered, comfortable atmosphere.
On the mezzanine level, the bedroom features a bold yellow ceiling, offset by patterned wallpaper and custom carpentry—elements that bring a distinct character to the space without overwhelming it.
This renovation demonstrates Nefelia Studio’s ongoing commitment to blending tradition with modern design principles. The result is a well-balanced home that respects its context while offering updated functionality and visual clarity.
