Keit is a bakery located in Kreuzberg, Berlin, Germany, designed by Studio Michael Burman , an Interior and Homeware Studio, that manages to combine both old and modern materials with organic shapes and clean transitions between elements, so that the space feels new and fresh while paying tribute to traditional craft.
Reflecting on the heritage of bread-making and flour-production, the store counter was constructed using an old mill stone.
The stone was cut into three pieces to create a winding flow between the segments. An additional stainless steel segment completes the table and offers storage underneath. The table base is made from solid douglas wood, with careful consideration given to emphasizing the grain structure of the wood.
Natural materials and a soft color palette are used throughout the store to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Walls are covered in handmade washi paper, sheets are slightly overlapped to form a subtle grid structure. Washi paper was also used to construct the organically shaped custom-made lamps. Casting light through the textured paper, they emit a gentle glow.
The bread is displayed on a large, stainless steel shelving system, offering a clean, industrial contrast to the natural elements in the space. A custom-made douglas wood display platform and bench with rounded edges echo the sculptural forms throughout the space. The floor in a deep brown is produced using Karibic Floor by Detale CPH.
Contrasting natural hues and materials with a clean design language, Studio Michael Burman has created a space that feels warm and inviting, yet modern.
