INTERIORS WE LOVE // Vivienda Madrid Río: design, comfort, and versatility | by LA MIRATECA

Located in the privileged setting of Madrid Río (a vibrant recreational and cultural axis that follows the Manzanares River) this home has undergone a complete transformation by LA MIRATECA studio, to meet the needs of a new stage in its owners’ lives.

The project tackles a full redistribution of the space, aiming to enhance the entry of natural light and improve the overall functionality of the property.

Beyond updating installations, materials, and finishes, the intervention is guided by a clear premise: to provide the home with maximum spatial freedom and flexibility.

The design is intended to support different rhythms and ways of living, allowing spaces to evolve along with those who inhabit them.

This renovation project redefines spatial versatility by allowing each area to naturally adapt and transform according to the residents’ needs. The intervention proposes a clear functional separation between the day and night areas, achieving a balance between fluidity and order.

At the heart of the home lies a central volume, conceived as the space’s articulating element. Clad in wood and filled with light, this core not only embraces existing structural elements but also resolves storage and organization needs: it functions as a bookshelf in the social area and transforms into a wardrobe in the private zone.

This solution provides visual continuity, material coherence, and a new way of understanding compartmentalization without sacrificing spaciousness or clarity.

The original home featured a highly compartmentalized interior layout, with poorly functional rooms and little visual connection between them.

The kitchen was isolated, disconnected from the rest of domestic life, while the living room offered limited comfort due to a lack of thermal and acoustic insulation. Both the main bedroom and bathroom suffered from a notable lack of privacy and adequate storage solutions. On top of this, the installations and finishes were completely outdated, unable to meet the comfort, efficiency, and habitability demands of a contemporary family.

The renovation was guided by a series of clear goals focused on completely transforming the living experience.

First, spatial reorganization was proposed through the removal of walls, enabling a more open and flexible layout that enhances the sense of space in common areas.

Natural light takes center stage, projected deep into the home to illuminate every corner with warmth and vitality.

In the same spirit, the kitchen opens up to the living-dining room, creating an integrated space that encourages social interaction and multifunctional use.

A comprehensive update of systems (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and insulation) addresses a dual need: to improve daily comfort and increase the home’s energy efficiency. Lastly, storage spaces have been optimized, with wardrobes, dressing rooms, and furniture tailored to the actual needs of the residents, offering practical and elegant solutions that naturally integrate with the overall design.

After the renovation, the home becomes a contemporary space that combines design, comfort, and versatility.

At the heart of the day area lies an open-plan kitchen with an island, visually expanding the space and encouraging daily interaction and natural light flow.

The night area is organized around three bedrooms conceived with a flexible approach: they can function as one large space or be subdivided into two or even three rooms, adapting to guests, leisure time, or changing needs. Yoga, reading, artistic creation, or rest—each corner is designed to support the evolving lifestyle of its inhabitants.

The project also includes two fully renovated bathrooms, featuring modern design and high-quality materials, adding functionality and sophistication to daily life. The new layout eliminates unnecessary hallways, prioritizing fluid circulation and continuous spaces. One of the most unique solutions is the transformation of a hallway into a hidden dressing room: through integrated wardrobes and wood-paneled doors, a warm and seamless enclosure is created, subtly uniting functionality and aesthetics.

The renovation is completed with a full update of the installations, improving not only energy efficiency but also ensuring greater safety and comfort in everyday use.

Special care was taken in the selection of materials and finishes, seeking a balance between functionality, aesthetics, and visual harmony. A single flooring surface runs throughout the entire home, creating continuity that enhances spaciousness and offers a pleasant texture underfoot. In kitchens and bathrooms, selected ceramics combine durability and easy maintenance with a contemporary design that adds character and sophistication.

Each choice responds to a unified vision, where warmth and timelessness define the project’s material language.

Lacquered white woodwork and oak details reinforce the sense of brightness and balance, while the new enclosures ensure optimal thermal and acoustic insulation, significantly improving indoor comfort.

The color palette (dominated by whites, beiges, and natural wood tones) creates a serene and luminous backdrop, enhancing the presence of natural light and allowing furniture and personal objects to take center stage in a cozy, harmonious setting.
