Calibra, a new Urban hub in Votanikos | by kometka architects

Calibra project is a multipurpose space that functions both autonomously and as an extension of a theater, located in the neighborhood of Votanikos in Athens. The architectural proposal by kometka architects prioritizes accessibility and inclusivity, while the atmosphere of the space is created through industrial elements and curved geometries.

Calibra, a new Urban hub in Votanikos, was conceived to operate on two levels: as an autonomous hub and bar, and simultaneously as an extension of the ISON Theatre, Athens’ first space dedicated to inclusive education and artistic practice for both disabled and non-disabled artists.

The design scope included the façade, interior, and courtyard. A restrained, minimalist approach was adopted, integrating industrial elements throughout.

The spatial language is defined by linear curves that are evident at every level, from the ground-level bar to the neon lighting and the two-story-high ceiling curtains. These continuous lines direct the gaze seamlessly from the interior to the exterior, creating a fluid visual connection.

At night, the curves are accentuated through strategic lighting, bold color reflections, and layered shadows.

The tall black curtains accentuate the double-height space and contribute to the theatrical atmosphere, while also serving a functional role by screening off the street activity during performances or events.

Ιn terms of material selection, the design focused on restoring and enhancing the space’s industrial character. Tiles that had been added during a previous renovation were removed, revealing the original terrazzo flooring beneath. For the new constructions, plywood, raw metal, and bent metal sheets were chosen.

Accessibility and inclusivity were fundamental requirements in the design of this contemporary multipurpose space.

Designing the bar counter was a central consideration in the overall design. The standard in bar counters is to have them at a high level, designed for people who are standing or sitting on tall stools. This automatically excludes groups where one or more people are wheelchair users. The alternative -having a lowered section while the rest remains at the standard height- could reinforce separation rather than resolving it.

For this reason, we chose a single bar height (lower than standard) that accommodates all users, so that everyone sits at the same level and maintains direct visual contact with the staff behind the bar.

All areas, including restrooms, are fully accessible.

The outdoor space transforms from a calm area with earthy tones and plants during the day into a vibrant night space. This interplay of form, light, and materiality reinforces the hub’s dual character while maintaining a cohesive spatial narrative.

Το έργο Calibra αποτελεί ένα χώρο πολλαπλών χρήσεων, ο οποίος λειτουργεί τόσο αυτόνομα αλλά και ως προέκταση ενός θεάτρου, στην γειτονιά του Βοτανικού στην Αθήνα. Η αρχιτεκτονική πρόταση των kometka architects, έχει προτεραιότητα την προσβασιμότητα και την συμπερίληψη, ενώ την ατμόσφαιρα του χώρου συνθέτουν βιομηχανικά στοιχεία και καμπύλες γεωμετρίες. 

Ο πολυχώρος Calibra στον Βοτανικό σχεδιάστηκε για να λειτουργεί αφενός αυτόνομα ως πολυχώρος και μπαρ και ταυτόχρονα και ως προέκταση του θέατρου ΙΣΟΝ που είναι ο πρώτος χώρος συμπεριληπτικής εκπαίδευσης και καλλιτεχνικής έκφρασης ανάπηρων και μη ανάπηρων καλλιτεχνών στην Αθήνα.

Το αντικείμενο του project περιλάμβανε τον σχεδιασμό της όψης, του εσωτερικού και της αυλής του πολυχώρου. Επιλέχθηκε ένας λιτός σχεδιασμός, με βιομηχανικά στοιχεία.

Οι ευθειογενείς καμπύλες επικρατούν σε όλα τα επίπεδα του χώρου, από τον σχεδιασμό της μπάρας στο επίπεδο του εδάφους μέχρι τον φωτισμό νέον και τις διώροφου ύψους κουρτίνες στην οροφή.

Έτσι το βλέμμα οδηγείται ομαλά από το εσωτερικό προς τον εξωτερικό χώρο της αυλής.

Οι καμπύλες αυτές τονίζονται ακόμη περισσότερο με τον νυχτερινό φωτισμό, με έντονους χρωματισμούς και αντανακλάσεις.

Η προσβασιμότητα και η συμπερίληψη ήταν φυσικά προαπαιτούμενο στον σχεδιασμό ενός σύγχρονου πολυχώρου.

Η μπάρα στο μπαρ έχει χαμηλότερο ύψος από το σύνηθες, για να εξυπηρετεί ταυτόχρονα τους χρήστες αμαξιδίου χωρίς διαχωρισμούς. Όλοι οι χώροι του μαγαζιού είναι προσβάσιμοι, συμπεριλαμβανομένων των χώρων υγιεινής.

Ο εξωτερικός χώρος μεταλλάσσεται από έναν ήρεμο χώρο σε γήινα χρώματα και φυτά το πρωί, σε έναν ζωντανό νυχτερινό χώρο συνάντησης.
