Architecture in Colour series explores the use of colour in architecture not merely as an aesthetic choice, but as a structural element that shapes how a space or building is read, navigated, experienced, and even constructed.
Carefully calibrated chromatic and material choices transform the Mosaic Apartment in Athens by Amalgama Architects into a spatial experience in which color defines movement, delineates functions, and creates immersive atmospheres within a compact layout. From the layered entrance threshold to the expressive communal areas and serene private zones, the project demonstrates how color operates as a fundamental architectural element, shaping both the experience and identity of the space.
The Mosaic Apartment in Athens, renovated by Amalgama Architects, is a project that positions color at the core of architectural thinking.
Rather than functioning as a decorative layer, color operates here as a spatial instrument—defining boundaries, guiding movement, and generating distinct atmospheres within the constraints of a compact residential layout.
The entrance hall is conceived as a transitional threshold, introducing the project’s conceptual framework from the outset. A continuous wooden surface conceals the wc and storage areas, forming a solid, tactile plane that adds depth and a sense of anticipation. Its warmth contrasts deliberately with the polished dark flooring, while controlled, subtle lighting accentuates the spatial sequence, preparing the visitor for the more intimate zones that unfold beyond.
Color and materiality are carefully calibrated to establish a cohesive yet dynamic first impression.
As the apartment opens up, each interior function is articulated through bold chromatic decisions combined with tactile materials, allowing every space to develop a clear and recognizable identity.
The bathroom and wc are treated as immersive, monochromatic environments, where warm tonalities and terrazzo textures enhance intimacy and reinforce spatial continuity. In the kitchen, deeper hues are paired with natural wood and stone surfaces, resulting in a character that is both refined and robust, balancing visual intensity with material authenticity.
Throughout the apartment, the color palette orchestrates a sequence of immersive environments, gradually transitioning from saturated and expressive combinations to the calmer, minimalist serenity of the private quarters.
This chromatic progression supports both functional clarity and experiential variation, ensuring a coherent narrative across the different spaces.
In Mosaic Apartment, color becomes an architectural element in its own right—one that structures space, enhances functionality, and establishes a unified yet nuanced spatial identity.
The project exemplifies how colour can become a fundamental tool for spatial organization and storytelling in contemporary residential design.
