DREAM HOUSES // Les Mont-Rogenques: awakening the lost essences of daily life in the neighborhood | by Estudi BIGA

Estudi BIGA in Les Mont-Rogenques, a rehabilitation of a house that had undergone several phases of growth, reveal the feeling of a past daily life in the neighborhood through the adaptation of different elements that harmoniously coexist with the present.

“From the backyard garden, for reasons unknown, we called it ‘the orchard,’ a majestic fig tree grew. At the base of this fig tree, there were piles of stones that must have been left over from the construction of the monument, old bricks, construction debris from work done on the house that Grandpa kept because he said they might come in handy one day.” (Mercè Rodoreda, resident of  Farró)

“Mont-rogenques” has emerged to accompany the characters of Mercè Rodoreda, who wander the streets of Farró, echoing a way of life that has disappeared, characterized by small gardens with fig and pomegranate trees, wisteria, climbing roses, hydrangeas planted in wooden tubs, rooftops with terracotta tiles and railings adorned with geraniums, dining rooms with iron lamps full of flowers and dracaenas, and finished with red trimmings. The glass door, with multi-colored glass panels, leads to the back garden.

Houses where the relationships between neighbors were, for better and for worse, like those of a large family.

The project aims to revive and recover these lost essences of daily life in the neighborhood.

However, far from becoming a museum space, Mont-rogenques is a flexible network of rooms that allow for various ways of living, easily adaptable, without predetermined or hierarchical uses.

Each one has its own idiosyncrasy, stemming from the textures, colors, light, and the different elements we have discovered beneath the various historical layers of the house, which harmoniously coexist with the newcomers.
