At the foot of Tibidabo, in Barcelona’s Sarrià–Sant Gervasi district, Atzur reinterprets a house born from the gradual accumulation of disparate volumes. Through a meticulous structural recalibration, the project transforms fragmentation into cohesion. Formerly compartmentalized interiors open to light and air, enabling fluid, adaptable living. The intervention preserves the memory embedded in the existing fabric, allowing past and present to coexist within a newly unified spatial narrative.

The project involves the refurbishment of a single-family residence located at the foothills of Tibidabo, in the Sarrià–Sant Gervasi district of Barcelona. The existing building was formed through the gradual addition of volumes of differing character, scale, and structural logic—resulting in a fragmented composition with uneven heights and disconnected functions.

Rather than erasing these inconsistencies, the design proposal by Atzur arquitectura embraces them as a latent resource.

The intervention focuses on unifying the disparate volumes through a precise and carefully articulated structural strategy, transforming diversity into spatial coherence while working within the constraints of the existing fabric. The original layout was defined by excessive compartmentalization, with rooms of inconvenient proportions that limited functionality, natural light, and cross-ventilation.

Addressing these shortcomings, the renovation rethinks the internal distribution to open up the house, allowing light and air to flow more freely across interconnected spaces.

Spatial generosity is achieved not through expansion, but through subtraction and reorganization—creating flexible, adaptable environments that respond to contemporary living needs.

Throughout the intervention, traces of the former structure are deliberately preserved, establishing a dialogue between past and present and reinforcing the project’s commitment to resource-conscious design and architectural restraint.
