Smokehouses | Issue 005: Resolve by Boom Saloon explores resilience through architecture, culture and critical thought. Featuring the work of Izat Arundell, the issue revisits the traditional smokehouse as a spatial and symbolic model. Through diverse global contributions, it reflects on urgent contemporary questions while foregrounding design as a tool for adaptation, reflection and collective imagination.

Drawing upon the concept of a traditional smokehouse, architecture practice Izat Arundell share their plans to revisit the structures and build two new forms to offer space for survival and celebration.

The fifth issue explores the theme of ‘resolve’ through contributions from an extraordinary global network of talents. Across four chapters – places, people, thoughts and tangents – it examines topics that are challenging, complex, thought-provoking and diverse.

In its most substantial feature, renowned photographers and climate change researchers Lena Dobrowolska and Teo Ormond-Skeaping join forces for a deep dive into scenario thinking, presenting a pressing ultimatum for humanity. Nonkululeko Sibande’s Umqhele unpacks the representation of Black hair within culture, while Ryan Filchak’s interview with The Design Museum’s Priya Khanchandani questions the moral imperatives of cultural institutions.

The issue also asks whether there is truly room at the top for everyone. Further food for thought comes in an extracted conversation between chef Jessica Elliott Dennison and sculptor Phillippa Henley, who seek to reframe perceptions of Scotland and all it has to offer.

This opens into a series of features developed closer to home, at a moment when inward reflection has become increasingly necessary.
