Waterfront Terraces: A Public Roofscape Cultural Center in Chalkida, Euboea, Greece by Varvara Christopoulou Architecture

Varvara Christopoulou Architecture designs Waterfront Terraces and transforms Chalkida’s waterfront into an elevated civic ground for collective public experience. A stepped roof creates terraces where visitors gather, pause, and share views of the city and water, while cultural spaces unfold beneath, engaging with the dynamic coastal edge. The project establishes a new urban topography that links public life, architecture, and the waterfront.

The Waterfront Terraces redefines the relationship between city and water, transforming the edge of Chalkida’s waterfront into an elevated civic ground for movement, pause, and collective observation. Located in the square at the city’s coastal threshold, the project establishes spatial continuity between the urban fabric and the maritime horizon.

The architectural composition rises gradually from the ground, maintaining alignment with the existing square while opening unobstructed views toward the waterfront.

This subtle elevation allows the project to operate simultaneously as landscape, public infrastructure, and cultural destination.

At the core of the proposal lies the stepped public roof, conceived as an accessible terraced platform reminiscent of amphitheatrical seating. Drawing inspiration from the collective spatial experience of ancient Greek theatre, the terraces introduce a sequence of stopping points and viewpoints. Visitors are invited to experience the city and the waterfront from varying heights, shaping a shared horizon that reinforces the civic character of the intervention. Materially, the use of marble surfaces anchors the design within local construction traditions.

During nighttime, discreet linear lighting traces the geometry of the stepped surface, allowing the roofscape to emerge gently as a recognizable urban landmark.

Beneath the elevated public roof, cultural functions are embedded within the terrain, forming protected and spatially focused environments. The main exhibition space unfolds in direct dialogue with the coastal edge and its shifting maritime conditions, allowing visitors to experience the presence and movement of water from within the subterranean landscape. Large framed openings establish moments of visual continuity between interior and exterior, strengthening the perceptual connection to the waterfront while maintaining a sense of enclosure and focus.

Environmental performance is supported through passive bioclimatic strategies that utilize the project’s sectional height differences.

Natural ventilation flows from the lower exhibition level toward the upper entrance level, creating a continuous upward airflow that contributes to passive cooling and reduces dependence on mechanical systems.

By balancing landscape integration, public accessibility, and cultural programming, the Waterfront Terraces proposes a new civic ground for Chalkida — a shared spatial framework where architecture, public life, and the waterfront converge.
