This architectural design book focuses on massing studies for multi-unit housing projects, namely apartment blocks; it provides a fresh look at architectural synthesis for architects, students and architecture-curious readers. The author Simos Vamvakidis re-examines the apartment block as a design model, for today and tomorrow, through a simple, flexible and explicit design approach.

The innovation of this book lies in the idea that any type of apartment block can be designed and understood using three programmatic areas/elements of any apartment building: housing units, circulation and communal spaces.

The book’s author clearly and explicitly demonstrates multiple combinations of the three elements during the massing phase of schematic design for multi-unit housing projects by examining case studies of more than fifteen globally renowned apartment buildings.

Simos Vamvakidis

Simos Vamvakidis is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at the University of Patras, Greece. He has been teaching design studios as a lecturer/year leader and an Assistant Professor in the UK, Greece and Lebanon since 2008. He founded SVstudio in 2006, an architectural office that has won prizes in international architecture competitions. His latest built project is the eight holiday houses on the island of Kea in Greece. He is interested in any architectural gesture that interrogates how we experience public and private spaces. He is the author of two monographs: Innovative Architecture Strategies (2016) and Composing Architecture and Interior Design (2018).

He holds a PhD in Architectural Design from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), funded by the Onassis Foundation, and the National Greek Scholarships Fund. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of West Athens, Greece and a diploma in Architectural Engineering from NTUA, graduating within the top five in 2003. He is an alumnus of the University of California, Los Angeles School of Architecture MArchII program, funded by the Fulbright Foundation. He has made numerous conference presentations.

Προσφέρει μια νέα ματιά στην αρχιτεκτονική σύνθεση για αρχιτέκτονες, φοιτητές και αναγνώστες που ενδιαφέρονται για την αρχιτεκτονική. Ο συγγραφέας Σίμος Βαμβακίδης επανεξετάζει την πολυκατοικία ως μοντέλο σχεδιασμού, για το σήμερα και το αύριο, μέσα από μια απλή, ευέλικτη και σαφή σχεδιαστική προσέγγιση.

Σίμος Βαμβακίδης

Ο Σίμος Βαμβακίδης είναι Επίκουρος Καθηγητής Αρχιτεκτονικής στο Πανεπιστήμιο Πατρών. Διδάσκει ως λέκτορας/υπεύθυνος έτους και Επίκουρος Καθηγητής στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, την Ελλάδα και τον Λίβανο από το 2008. Ίδρυσε το SVstudio το 2006, ένα αρχιτεκτονικό γραφείο που έχει κερδίσει βραβεία σε διεθνείς αρχιτεκτονικούς διαγωνισμούς. Το τελευταίο του κατασκευασμένο έργο είναι οι οκτώ εξοχικές κατοικίες στην Κέα. Ενδιαφέρεται για κάθε αρχιτεκτονική χειρονομία που διερευνά τον τρόπο με τον οποίο βιώνουμε τον δημόσιο και ιδιωτικό χώρο. Είναι συγγραφέας δύο ακόμα μονογραφιών: Innovative Architecture Strategies (2016) και Composing Architecture and Interior Design (2018).

Κατέχει διδακτορικό στον Αρχιτεκτονικό Σχεδιασμό από το Εθνικό Μετσόβιο Πολυτεχνείο (ΕΜΠ), με χρηματοδότηση από το Ίδρυμα Ωνάση και το ‘Ιδρυμα ΚρατικώνΥποτροφιών- ΙΚΥ. Είναι απόφοιτος του προγράμματος MArchII της Σχολής Αρχιτεκτονικής του Πανεπιστημίου της Καλιφόρνια, Λος Άντζελες UCLA, ως υπότροφος του Ιδρύματος Fulbright. Είναι κάτοχος διπλώματος Αρχιτεκτονικού Μηχανικού από το ΕΜΠ, από το οποίο αποφοίτησε ανάμεσα στους πέντε πρώτους το 2003. Έχει κάνει πολυάριθμες παρουσιάσεις σε αρχιτεκτονικά συνέδρια στην Ευρώπη.
