Ways of Sightseeing by Lea Kavvasiadi explores tourism through the intertwined acts of travelling, seeing and storytelling. Drawing on historical travelogues and archival research, the project questions how places are mediated through the gaze of the traveller. At its centre is Penelope, a fictional scholar of the future, whose encounters with the archive unfold into Penelope’s House of Postcards—an imaginary space where travel, memory and imagination converge.
Ways of Sightseeing emerges from a love affair between a travelogue[1] and a book on tourism.[2]
It focuses on the unasked-for commitments arising from the speculation that the age of exploration has come to an end and there is nowhere left to travel.
The concept of scholē (idleness, doing nothing) returns to its original meaning – as a state of contemplation. Penelope, a virtual character, is fabricated as a storyteller of the digital world.
Obstacle – Ways of Sightseeing is concerned with the act of periegesis, rooted in the ancient and ubiquitous concept of theoria, which combines vision and intellectual inquiry. Through archival research and speculative documentation, WoS proposes ways of formulating and articulating an abstract stance with regard to the phenomenon of tourism that aligns with contemporary technology.

Archive – WoS is anchored in three travelogues from the distant and early past – Description of Greece by Pausanias (2nd century), The Book of Travels[3] (Seyahatname) by Evliya Çelebi (17th century), and A Journey through the Crimea to Constantinople[4] by Lady Craven (18th century). The study explores the mediated nature of place, where early travelers ”looked without seeing”, composing hazy islets of reality[5] they carried within themselves.

Theory – WoS envisions Penelope as the scholar of the future,[6] who, through abstraction, guide us among the attractions, the desires, and itineraries of wanderers and wonderers. She engages with the archive through intimate encounters with books and figures, sensing patterns of interference between travelogues, tuning a theoretical voice adequate to the chimeric genre of travel writing, and picking up words and meanings that invoke imagination while eclipsing mere economic relations.

Penelope’s House of Postcards – WoS composes a series of postcards featuring photographs documenting the Efstathios I. Finopoulos Collection – Benaki Museum in Athens, where the research began, accompanied by original commentary texts.
The world is condensed into the house: the interior of the Athenian archive is rendered as Penelope’s fantastical archive of travels, and her weaving becomes the logos of travel writing.

Conceived within the epos — the ultimate travelogue — yet overshadowed by her husband’s adventures, Penelope’s story remains encoded in shadows and phantoms. Thus, her temperament is projected towards the future, a proper season rendering the premise that what is worth seeing is a good story to tell!
