In the centre of Trikala, Engineering Studio 28, led by architect Evi Soulemetsi, transforms a 30 m2 semi-basement into MANIRŪ, a nail salon conceived through the interplay of exposed structure, filtered light and permeable boundaries. Rather than altering the existing building envelope, the design works with the limitations and traces of the space, using its exposed concrete beam and column as active components of the new interior organisation. Fabric curtains, large mirrors and recurring metal grids further manipulate the perception of the compact footprint, allowing the boundaries of the interior to remain fluid. Here, depth is not a consequence of size, but of a carefully orchestrated sequence of transparency, reflection, material repetition and changing degrees of privacy.
MANIRŪ occupies an approximately 30 m2 semi-basement space in the centre of Trikala, formerly used as a photography studio.
The primary aim of the design was to expand the perception of the interior and enhance the penetration of natural light, without altering the existing building envelope.
During the demolition phase, elements of the structural system were revealed, informing the architectural direction of the proposal.
The existing beam and column were retained, exposed and integrated into the new spatial organisation, functioning both as structural traces of the existing shell and as elements that define and organise the individual areas of the salon. The roughness of the exposed concrete acts as a reminder of the space’s construction, introducing a material presence that shapes the entire composition. At the same time, the beam establishes a natural threshold between the reception and waiting area and the main service space.
The different functions are arranged without interrupting the continuity of the interior.
Rather than introducing fixed partitions, fabric curtains are used as adaptable boundaries, allowing natural light to filter through while maintaining visual continuity between the different zones. At the same time, they provide the necessary degree of privacy during use. The same principle extends to the auxiliary spaces: a continuous fabric curtain conceals the volume of the WC, transforming it into an abstract backdrop within the interior.
At the centre of the space, a custom-made manicure table constructed from galvanised steel floor grating becomes the principal constructed element of the proposal.
Its metallic structure engages in a dialogue with the exposed concrete and the built-in reception counter, constructed from Ytong blocks and finished with an oak surface. Together, these elements establish a material language based on the clarity of construction and the direct expression of materials, introducing a distinct industrial reference throughout the project.
The grid of the metal grating reappears in the ceramic tiles of the raised pedicure platform.
The repetition of the same geometric logic at different scales establishes a coherent compositional language that runs throughout the interior, continuously reintroducing a reference to the human scale.
Large mirrors are positioned at key points within the space, extending visual perspectives and multiplying the diffusion of both natural and artificial light. Their presence weakens the perception of the interior’s actual boundaries and reinforces the sense of spatial continuity, allowing the relatively constrained dimensions of the salon to be experienced as more expansive.
Exposed concrete, fabric curtains, metal structures and reflective surfaces come together to form an interior where fixed boundaries coexist with changing conditions of use and perception. Alongside these more industrial elements, a palette of earthy tones, off-white shades and oak details creates a soft and luminous environment.
The perception of depth does not derive from the actual dimensions of the space, but from a sequence of permeable boundaries, reflections and recurring constructed elements. Through this interplay, MANIRŪ turns the constraints of a compact semi-basement into the basis for an interior whose spatial character is defined not by enclosure, but by continuity, light and the shifting perception of its limits.
