Located on New Goulston Street, Macchiato transforms an underused corner of Petticoat Lane into a place for gathering and social interaction. Designed by OUT Architecture for Aldgate Connect BID as part of the London Festival of Architecture 2026, the project was selected from more than 30 entries to the ‘A Place to Belong: Goulston Street Pocket Park’ competition. Conceived as a flexible setting for café customers, market visitors, residents and community activities, its circular bench echoes the ring left by a coffee cup on a table. Stainless steel recalls coffee-making equipment, while cork references the material and origins of the coffee bean, connecting the installation to ethical trade and Petticoat Lane’s longstanding culture of exchange.
“We’re delighted to see Macchiato realised in the public realm as part of this year’s London Festival of Architecture. It has been exciting to bring the project from concept to completion in such a specific and vibrant context, and to contribute to the wider life of Petticoat Lane and the surrounding neighbourhood. We look forward to seeing how the community will engage with the installation over time, and how new and spontaneous uses will emerge as people begin to relate to and inhabit the new space in their own ways,” say the architects.
The London Festival of Architecture (LFA) returned across the British capital in June 2026, continuing more than two decades of engagement with architecture, public space and urban life. Established in 2004 as the London Architecture Biennale and evolving into an annual festival in 2013, the LFA has grown into a city-wide platform bringing together architects, designers and local communities through installations, exhibitions, talks and spatial interventions.

Under the 2026 theme “Belonging”, the festival explored how architecture can strengthen connections between people and place, encouraging participation and more inclusive forms of city-making across London’s diverse neighbourhoods.
Set within the dense commercial fabric of Aldgate, where the City of London meets Tower Hamlets, Macchiato occupies a small corner of New Goulston Street within the historic Petticoat Lane Market area.
Long shaped by commerce, migration and cultural exchange, the neighbourhood is currently the focus of a broader effort to strengthen its public realm and recover overlooked street spaces for pedestrian and collective use.
It is within this context that OUT Architecture transforms an underused site outside The Colombian Coffee Company, a social enterprise centred on community impact and ethical trade, into a pocket park centred on one of the city’s most familiar social rituals: meeting over coffee. Working at the scale of everyday encounter, Macchiato turns an ordinary trace—the circular mark left by a coffee cup—into a piece of social infrastructure for Petticoat Lane.
The project takes its name from the Italian word macchiato, meaning “marked” or “stained”.
OUT Architecture translates this linguistic reference directly into spatial form: the circular stain left by a cup on a tabletop is enlarged into a continuous shared bench, transforming an incidental mark into a place for sitting, meeting and gathering.
Its 360-degree geometry avoids prescribing a single orientation or mode of occupation, instead allowing people to approach and inhabit the installation from different directions. This simple gesture establishes a close relationship between the installation and The Colombian Coffee Company, while extending the social ritual of the café into the public realm.
Coffee becomes both a conceptual starting point and a means of connecting private consumption with collective urban life, allowing the pocket park to function as an intermediary between the café, the market and the street.
Its material palette develops the same narrative through texture and association.
Stainless steel recalls the machinery, utensils and equipment used in coffee preparation, giving the intervention a precise, reflective character. Cork introduces a warmer and more tactile counterpoint, referencing natural materiality and the agricultural origins associated with coffee production.
Together, the materials translate different stages and atmospheres of coffee culture into an architectural vocabulary of surface, touch and use.
Macchiato brings these histories into dialogue, situating a contemporary public intervention within the everyday life of its surroundings.
Σχεδιασμένο από το OUT Architecture για το Aldgate Connect BID, στο πλαίσιο του London Festival of Architecture 2026, το έργο επιλέχθηκε ανάμεσα σε περισσότερες από 30 συμμετοχές στον διαγωνισμό “A Place to Belong: Goulston Street Pocket Park”.
Το London Festival of Architecture (LFA)
Το The Colombian Coffee Company
