On Aspri Ammos, a remote beach on the Diapontian island of Othonoi, artist The Krank creates The Hunt as part of the ionian lab residency by space52 and Kalogerou, a temporal land art installation that draws on the visual language of prehistoric cave paintings to explore the relationship between humanity’s earliest forms of survival and the contemporary landscape. Installed just kilometres from a planned offshore drilling zone, the work transforms the beach into both canvas and context, using scale, temporality and site specificity to explore how landscapes carry memory while anticipating future environmental and industrial transformations.
Στην παραλία Άσπρη Άμμος στους Οθωνούς, ο εικαστικός The Krank δημιουργεί το The Hunt στο πλαίσιο του ionian lab residency που διοργάνωσαν οι space52 and Kalogerou, μια εφήμερη εγκατάσταση land art που αντλεί έμπνευση από την εικονογραφία των προϊστορικών σπηλαιογραφιών, μεταφέροντάς την στο σύγχρονο τοπίο. Τοποθετημένο λίγα μόλις χιλιόμετρα από μια περιοχή όπου σχεδιάζονται υπεράκτιες εξορύξεις, το έργο μετατρέπει την παραλία ταυτόχρονα σε καμβά και σε πεδίο νοήματος, αξιοποιώντας την κλίμακα, την εφήμερη φύση της επέμβασης και τη στενή σύνδεσή της με τον τόπο, για να διερευνήσει τον τρόπο με τον οποίο τα τοπία φέρουν τη συλλογική μνήμη, ενώ ταυτόχρονα προοιωνίζονται μελλοντικούς περιβαλλοντικούς και βιομηχανικούς μετασχηματισμούς.
A temporary 500sqm land art installation titled The Hunt has been created on Aspri Ammos Beach on the Greek island of Othonoi, the country’s westernmost inhabited point. Created by artist The Krank during the Ionian Lab residency by Space52 & Kalogerou 1844, the work depicts two prehistoric hunters confronting the silhouette of an offshore oil platform.
Η προσωρινή εγκατάσταση land art «Το Κυνήγι» δημιουργήθηκε στην παραλία Άσπρη Άμμος στους Οθωνούς, το δυτικότερο κατοικημένο σημείο της Ελλάδας. Το έργο υλοποιήθηκε από τον εικαστικό The Krank στο πλαίσιο του προγράμματος φιλοξενίας Ionian Lab του Space52 & Καλογέρου 1844 και απεικονίζει δύο προϊστορικούς κυνηγούς αντιμέτωπους με το περίγραμμα μιας υπεράκτιας πλατφόρμας εξόρυξης.
The installation is located approximately 10 kilometres from Block 2 in the northern Ionian Sea, where offshore hydrocarbon drilling is planned. Rather than presenting this relationship in a gallery, the work is situated within the actual landscape facing a possible industrial transformation, allowing the site itself to become part of the artwork.
Η εγκατάσταση βρίσκεται περίπου δέκα χιλιόμετρα από το Block 2 στο βόρειο Ιόνιο, περιοχή όπου σχεδιάζονται υπεράκτιες εξορύξεις υδρογονανθράκων. Αντί να παρουσιάζει αυτή τη σχέση μέσα σε έναν εκθεσιακό χώρο, το έργο αναπτύσσεται μέσα στο ίδιο το τοπίο που ενδέχεται να γνωρίσει έναν μελλοντικό βιομηχανικό μετασχηματισμό, μετατρέποντας τον ίδιο τον τόπο σε αναπόσπαστο μέρος του έργου.
Drawing on the visual language of prehistoric cave paintings, The Hunt connects humanity’s earliest forms of survival with contemporary resource extraction. The temporary intervention remained on the beach only for documentation, leaving no permanent alteration to the site while inviting public reflection on the relationship between landscape, energy and collective memory.
Αντλώντας έμπνευση από τη μορφή των προϊστορικών σπηλαιογραφιών, το «Κυνήγι» συνδέει τις πρώτες μορφές ανθρώπινης επιβίωσης με τις σύγχρονες πρακτικές εξόρυξης φυσικών πόρων. Η εγκατάσταση παρέμεινε στην παραλία μόνο για όσο διάστημα απαιτήθηκε για τη φωτογραφική και κινηματογραφική τεκμηρίωσή της και στη συνέχεια απομακρύνθηκε πλήρως, χωρίς να αφήσει μόνιμη επέμβαση στον χώρο.
Biography
The Krank (b. 1988, Greece) is a visual artist based in Athens whose practice spans painting, installation, video and land art.
His work has been presented internationally, including TYPO Berlin in Haus der Kulturen der Welt, SFVV (Deutsches Historisches Museum), Transmediale, Berlin Art Week, DENA Kongress, Funkhaus (Berlin), Documenta Halle (Kassel), KKL Luzern (Lucerne), The United Nations (UN) in World Conference Center (Bonn), Czong Institute for Contemporary Art (South Korea), Berry Campbell Gallery (New York), Barbican Centre with British Council and Toynbee Studios (London), Instituto Guimarães Rosa, SESI Lab and the World Health Organization (WHO) during COP30 (Brazil), VIMA Art Fair (Cyprus), The Wrong Biennale (Spain), Rotterdam Art Weekend (Netherlands) and Parnassos Literary Society, Athens Conservatory, Eleusis European Capital of Culture 2023, Michael Cacoyannis Foundation, Art Athina, Paxos Biennale (Greece).
