Hospitality Atmospheres explores the spatial, material, and sensory qualities that shape experiences of welcome. Through carefully selected projects, the series examines how architecture frames comfort, encounter, and ritual thus revealing hospitality not as a program, but as an atmosphere shaped by light, texture, proportion, and use.
In Ano Koufonisi, Yria Design has designed four summer residences as a sequential composition of volumes, stone walls and outdoor spaces. Two distinct typologies are repeated and organised into a balanced spatial sequence, shaped by the site’s topography, orientation and visual axes. The elongated stone walls extend beyond the boundaries of the white volumes and into the landscape, organising courtyards, movement, views and privacy. In this way, inhabitation unfolds as a sequence of solids and voids, light and shadow, stone and white, creating a continuous transition between architecture and the Cycladic landscape.
The project involves the design of four summer residences in Ano Koufonisi. The architectural proposal begins with an understanding of the site as a field of relationships, shaped by its topography, orientation, visual axes and the coexistence of residences at different scales. These parameters are brought together within a unified system, where repetition functions as a means of creating a balanced spatial sequence.
The composition is based on two residential typologies, one smaller and one larger, which are repeated to form four distinct dwellings.
Their placement follows a sequential spatial arrangement, allowing each unit to maintain its autonomy while remaining in continuous relation to the others. This configuration creates a sequence of solids and voids in which the outdoor spaces assume an equal role alongside the enclosed spaces.

Stone walls form a central element of the composition, emphasising the elongated geometry of the volumes while extending beyond the building and into the landscape.
Their role goes beyond the definition of physical boundaries. They organise movement, shape courtyards, filter the relationships between the residences and establish a sequence of outdoor and covered spaces.
Set between these solid elements, the white rendered volumes of the residences create a clear contrast between heavy and light, solid and porous.
The articulation of the façades similarly follows the logic of orientation and views.

The white southern façades open generously towards the light and the landscape, reinforcing the continuity between interior and exterior. In contrast, the stone façades are defined by limited openings that protect privacy while selectively framing views. Between the volumes, the intermediate outdoor spaces are shaded by large pergolas and become the primary setting for summer living—a transitional space where everyday life unfolds between architecture and landscape.
The same logic continues into the interiors.
A restrained palette of natural materials, off-white surfaces and raw textures creates a quiet material backdrop, against which darker tones of wood and metal introduce depth and tactility.
The interior atmosphere remains deliberately understated, allowing the relationship between light, texture and the surrounding landscape to take centre stage.
The proposal does not seek to reproduce Cycladic architecture in formal terms.
Instead, it engages with some of its enduring qualities: the clarity of geometry, the weight and permanence of stone, and above all, the uninterrupted relationship between inhabitation and landscape. In Ano Koufonisi, architecture is thus articulated through a sequence of elements that do not operate independently, but as parts of a unified spatial system—a “sequence in stone” that extends inhabitation from the building to the spaces in between and, ultimately, into the landscape itself.
