Hospitality Atmospheres explores the spatial, material, and sensory qualities that shape experiences of welcome. Through carefully selected projects, the series examines how architecture frames comfort, encounter, and ritual thus revealing hospitality not as a program, but as an atmosphere shaped by light, texture, proportion, and use.
Set into a rocky, north-facing slope at Lia Beach on the island of Serifos, Perma by MOLD Architects is conceived as a five-residence retreat that becomes inseparable from the terrain it inhabits. An orchestrated composition of concrete, stone, earth, water, light and void unfolds around a three-dimensional concrete grid that frames views and creates protected spaces while maintaining a continuous relationship with sea, sky and landscape. This continuity extends to the project’s material ecology: stone extracted during excavation is reused throughout the architecture, while remaining earth forms broad horizontal terraces; locally crafted, cast-in-place floors and furnishings further root the retreat in its site. Rainwater collection, planted roofs and edible species complete an architecture in which construction and landscape operate as a single system.
The project begins with the site itself.
Perma Serifos is positioned on a rocky slope, where the architecture is understood less as an autonomous structure and more as a framework through which the qualities of the landscape can be experienced at an intimate scale.
The concrete grid becomes the principal ordering device, establishing a clear architectural structure without attempting to abstract or dominate its surroundings.
Instead, it holds together the diverse elements of the site, allowing earth, water, stone, sunlight, reeds and void to occupy its spaces and acquire definition through architecture.
Within this structure, enclosure and openness coexist.
The three-dimensional grid produces a series of protected, inward-facing spaces while maintaining visual connections with the sea, the sky and the surrounding terrain.

These open spaces operate as extensions of the landscape: places where light, shadow, air and vegetation are gathered and framed, creating moments of retreat within the larger natural setting.
The relationship between architecture and terrain is not limited to the project’s spatial and conceptual approach; it also informs its construction.
Stone used throughout the project is sourced directly from the excavation, while the remaining excavated material is reused to form the broad horizontal terraces of the site.
In this way, the act of building becomes closely tied to the transformation of the existing ground, with materials removed from the terrain returning to it in a new configuration.

The same principle continues into the interiors.
Floors and built-in furnishings are cast on site by local craftsmen, reinforcing the sense of continuity between the architecture and the place in which it is built.
Rainwater is collected and reused for irrigation, while the planted roofs are cultivated with edible species.
Sustainability is embedded within the project’s broader architectural logic, with the materials and resources of the site continuously reintroduced into the architecture.
The result is an architecture that seeks to bring the physical elements of Serifos closer to the experience of dwelling.
Concrete establishes the grid, but within it the architecture remains deliberately porous, allowing the landscape to enter through views, vegetation, light, air and material.
Perma Serifos thus operates between structure and terrain, enclosure and openness, permanence and transformation, forming a sequence of inhabitable spaces that extend the landscape into the experience of dwelling and remain firmly anchored to the ground.
