Designed by Georgios Apostolopoulos Architects in Glyfada, Athens, Ugly Rolls is conceived as a small urban interface, where preparation, service and movement converge at the threshold of the building. The compact footprint becomes the basis for a direct relationship with the street, giving a modest shopfront a clear and recognisable presence within the streetscape. A metal-framed glazed façade, marked by a striped awning, establishes the shop’s identity, while two vertically opening service windows extend the counter towards the public realm. Through these openings, coffee and cinnamon rolls are served directly to passers-by, creating an informal connection between the interior and the life of the street.
The spatial organisation follows the same principle of clarity and economy. Within the limited floor area, two linear preparation counters define the interior, with the working functions arranged along their perimeter to maximise the available space.

A restrained palette of stainless steel surfaces, timber joinery, and the brand’s signature maroon red combines the practical demands of a working pastry shop with a tactile and welcoming character.
The contrast between the cool, durable quality of stainless steel and the warmth of timber gives the interior a distinct material identity without overcomplicating the space.
The plan is organised into two interconnected zones.

At the front, the customer counter serves visitors both inside the shop and through the opening windows, extending the activity of the interior towards the pavement.
Further inside, the production area remains visible, bringing the preparation of the cinnamon rolls into the customer’s field of view and making the process itself part of the experience.
This openness is balanced by a precise functional organisation. The working elements are arranged around the two linear counters, allowing preparation and service to operate efficiently within the compact footprint. At the same time, the visual continuity between the production area, customer zone and street creates a fluid relationship between inside and outside, between making and serving.
Ugly Rolls Glyfada ultimately derives its character from this dialogue between efficiency and openness.
The project relies on a few carefully considered architectural gestures—the glazed façade, the striped awning, the opening service windows and the visible production area—to give a small retail space a strong presence.
The shop becomes an active threshold within the Glyfada streetscape, where the architecture is closely tied to the everyday rituals of making, serving and passing by.
